So Dark You Can't Even See.

I would think that for a homebrew scenario rule that if you shoot into a dark place (or an invisible character if there was a figure with some sort of invisibilty power) that you would roll normal attack dice and defense dice as usual, but...
The defender gets +3 defense against nonadjacent figures
AND/OR
The attacker must first roll a D20 and if it's not 13 or higher then it is ruled as a miss against nonadjacent figures.

I would also add that a ranged figure shooting FROM an invisible place should get a +2 (or 3) attack dice due to the surprise attack factor.

Drop the house rule stuff, the question had nothing to do with house rules/scenarios, it was a legitimate rules question. It is possible to have a pitch black cave, although it is pretty hard to get a figure into these kinds of caves it is possible (especially with small figures like the spider that was used in the example).

I had never even given the lighting of a cave a first thought. Though now that it has received some time... I'd think that because you literally cannot see the figure then you cannot attack it because there is no visible hit zone.

Turn a light on.

The rules say nothing about the absence or presence of light affecting LOS, so just as easy as a player can say you can't see this figure becasue it is too dark, another player can whip out his pocket light and say he can see the figure.

Just turn on a light.

Though i agree with KingArthur, I don't think darkness is really a factor in heroscape, because if some of you weren't so lazy that you could get up and get a flashlight, it wouldn't be so dark.
