How it will all be linked is as follows:
You'll enter a scenario into the database, if you need a specific scenario for the map you're about to enter.
When you submit your map. There will be a multiple select box, containing several "generic" scenarios, such as "Kill Em All", "Capture the flag", etc., as well as any scenarios that you have entered. You can then select as many scenarios as you want for that map.
Now, when you view a map, you'll also see a listing of all applicable scenarios on the same page. You would also be able to sort the main listing by scenario.
Wow! Awesome on the scenario features.

For battlefields, how about:
1) Symmetrical Rating: 1-Extremely Symmetrical, 2-Somewhat Symmetrical, 3-Not Symmetrical

For scenarios, how about:
1) Teamplay (check on my Master Scenario link I mentioned before and click on the "Team" column header.)
2) Min/Max army points. (which you already mentioned)
3) Army selection: Premade, Drafting, Preset (Many scenarioes say Drafting OR Premade. So far, we've only seen the preset army concept with the campaign scenarios in SotM.)
4) Part of Campaign (yes or no)
the map symmetry is a good idea. selection could be made from a drop down list.
here are the options I'm considering
2-sided non symmetrical
2-sided part symmetrical
2-sided fully symmetrical
3-sided non
3 sided part
3 sided full
4 sided non
4 sided part
4 sided full
5 sided non
5 sided part
5 sided full (i don't know how but maybe someone will surprise me!)
6 sided non
6 sided part
6 sided full
non-sided non-symmetrical
non-sided part symmetrical
non-sided full symmetrical

and for generic scenarios, i'm consdiering
1 on 1 destroy your opponent
1 on 1 castle siege
1 on 1 capture the flag
3 player destroy your opponent
4 player destroy your opponent
5 player destroy your opponent
6 player destroy your opponent
8 player destroy your opponent
2 on 1 dyo
2 on 1 cs
2 on 1 stf
2 on 2 dyo
2 on 2 cs
2 on 2 ctf
3 on 1 dyo
3 on 1 cs
3 on 1 ctf
3 on 3 dyo
3 on 3 cs
3 on 3 ctf
4 on 4 dyo
4 on 4 cs
4 on 4 ctf

I'm sure there are more, so please recommend some. remember I only want to list generic scenarios that it's possible multiple maps will use. what are other common scenarios?

I believe this method of categorization will make searching the database much easier.

The more feedback I get on this now, the better the db will be later on - and the less re-writing I'll have to do.

pashadowops Woo who?
Eckels....Hats off. This is a great undertaking. I visited the database this afternoon while at work and it looks great. I would like to make a suggestion, when you open the pdf files, you may want to make them open in a separate window. Many people, mau included have a bad habit of closing a window instead of using the back button on the mouse or the browser. Seeing as you created this masterpiece, I'm sure your familiar with "target=_blank". Just so doofuses like me won't keep closing the site instead of just the pdf....hehe

Keep up the great work. My son and I will be using this frequently!

Where does the time go? I got a lot of catching up to do! How many more expansions and a new master set...Jeez!

The user always has the choice of opening something in a separate window by holding the shift key while clicking on a link. I personally don't like web pages that force something to open in a separate windows.

With most modern browsers, a _blank target sends the page to a new tab, not a new window, leaving the database tab alone.

I prefer the download links to open in another tab, so that's how it'll be for now, but at some point in the future, I may add a user option to toggle this. Right now, it's not a priority.

Just a heads up to anyone who might notice - I had to empty the members table, as I had to make some changes to it's structure.

I'll soon be wiping the maps as well - for the same reasons.

Re: Heroscape Map Database

Eckels,

Just curious as to the status on the database. I'd like to add the maps from the SHS site, but I don't want to start the process if the site is still not in a stable (maybe that's not the right word....) state. In other words, I don't want to start adding 140+ maps to the database and find that I'll have to redo it all over again.

You had said that the tables would have to be emptied back out again, but I didn't know if this already happened or if you are still planning on doing this.

Just trying to see how it's coming along, that's all. Killer resource, btw. Very handy.

Yeah, good thing you asked first

DONT add them yet.

i actually made a long update post yesterday, in-browser, and hit the back button and lost it.

Very frustrating.

The status is, it's still progressing. I'm in the middle of implementing a new design for all the pages, as well as updating a lot of messy code, to increase speed and reduce server load. I'm also halfway done with the scenario system, but it has yet to be crossed over with the map system.

I still plan on wiping the maps table, but I'm not going to do it until I'm sure that I've got all the fields set (name, author, # of players, etc..). I'm still coming up with new ways to sort the maps, and I don't want to have to update old maps without the required fields, dig?

I'm at that frustrating stage in development where everything is half-done and all the progress i'm making seems to amount to nothing, but I've been working on it quite a bit. Going back and re-doing large parts of code doesn't help either. I did a lot of work on it this past weekend, though without telling you where to look, you might never be able to tell.

I'll probably give it a rest for a few days. I don't want to burn myself out on it. This weekend is the Battle at the Border tournament in Rhode Island. After it's over I'll dive back into the code and get some more done.

Oh and don't worry, I'll be sure to make an announcement when the DB is totally up and running.

Re: Heroscape Map Database

Np. Thanks so much for the update.

I plan on adding all the maps to the system when the green light is on.

Thanks for all you do!
