The sad I'm about to refrence is hard to explain. Its the saddness of making someone else sad. In Kingdom Hearts 2 when you finally get all the pages to Pooh's Book and he ask you not to leave because he's afraid he'll forget you again, that made me a little sad I must admit. Poor ole bear.

I have to say that the saddest ending to a game that I've seen was the end of Oddworld Stranger's Wrath.

*SPOILER*
After Stranger kills Secto, everyone found out that Secto was a mind-controlled Steaf (is that how you spell it?) and I think he was Stranger's father too. so sad

SPOILER ALERT

Call of Duty 4

When your Helicopter crashes, and they let you walk around for a minute in slow mo right before you keel over and die. Total bummer, and it was only half way through the game.

The Darkness

You are so upset about your life, your loved ones are all killed because of you, and you run into the bathroom and blow your own head off.

Then the Darkness revives you. That one totally caught me off guard.

Huggable Zombie, KingArthur1976, Utgarsrage, and Scapegeek are all great traders.

The first really sad scene I remember was at the end of Ninja Gaiden 2. The ultimate pyrrhic victory.

When Kefka destroyed the world in FFVI.

Anyway....sad games. I can't think of any off the top of my head. I've played scary games, or shocking games, or funny games, but not a whole lot of true sadness. I think it's really tough to design a game in which the players truly connect with the characters on an emotional level. Most games your allies are just meat shields or blundering idiots that get in the way, and any princess-type character you need to rescue is just a vague goal that justifies further game levels.

Some folks might say Bioshock is sad. I suppose it could be, but I find it's hard to connect to the creepy little girls enough to care what happens to them. Perhaps I need to play thorugh more of the game. I haven't beat it yet.

That seems to be the general consensus.
This also made me sad, though I never really played the game, just the first part till the first boss fight.

And I saw that on x-plays spoiler theater, and almost cryed

The radiation death scene was a bit of a shocker. I didn't see that one coming at all. I gotta say though that the level where you slowly die drags on far too long. I kept thinking I was supposed to do something and then I just died...I'm glad they kept it to a minute though instead of two or three minutes!

I know Chief doesn't die. I never said he did. I said I started the game assuming everyone was going to die EXCEPT Chief and Arbiter.

And you don't have to beat the game on Legendary to see that he survives. Any difficulty shows Cortana putting him in hypersleep and the two of them chatting and floating in space, Legendary just shows a few seconds more at the end and makes it clear that they are drifting towards some sort of planet.

I personally never played FF7 so I've never seen it.

My saddest moment is in StarOcean Till the End of Time when Fayt's parents die in the explosion on the space station.

Tale of Symphonia - When the group has to kill Marble.

Golden Sun - The fact that one of the coolest games was over.

LoZ Phantom Hourglass - The ending was so bad that I cried... almost.

All work and no play makes n1ck3l a dull boy... and it means you are spending too much time setting up the map. Get on with it!

The end to The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. From the minute I walked out and saw Ganondorf delivering his monologue I had chills. But the ending was really quite bittersweet. The King bids goodbye, and... you leave. Hyrule dies. Very depressing, and yet, it makes you happy at the same time.

And, just a few days ago, the ending to Phoenix Wright: Trails and Tribulations. EVERYTHING. From the minute Godot cried to Larry's sketch, I was crying like a baby. It FEELS like the end, and I had really grown attached to the characters. Apollo Justice is great, but it will never compare.
I will have to second your vote for LoZ:WW
