Multiple Master Sets and Why?
So I'm very new to Heroscape, but I've played many a other strategy game. Heroscape seems to combine a bit of collectability and a lower cost than the Warhammer games, while being much more accessible.
However, what I'm wondering is what is the purpose of having dozens of Master Sets? I currently have 2 SotM and 1 RotV. Since there are few common armies in each of those, you're basically getting them just for the terrain, correct? Just want to know if it would be beneficial to grab a $20 RotV (not Edition 1 Thanks for the advice for a new guy! (and sorry if this has been covered...I can't find a search function at all and I went a few pages back looking for something similar) |

There are no common squads/heroes in the RotV master set, but it is the single largest set of HS terrain sold. Many here find that 1 MS worth of terrain is too little and wish to build bigger maps. A second or third RotV opens up tons of possibilities. Check out the Battlefields and Scenarios section under "Downloads" for plenty of examples.
Another reason for purchasing multipe RotV is for creating customs. Check out the custom terrain and custom units threads for plenty of examples of what people have done with "extra" RotV figures and terrain. There's not much use for multiple unique squads and heroes, so people are more willing to disect and repaint these. Bases from extra master set figures can be used for one's own custom creations. Also, master sets are the only source (outside of e-bay) for certain tile configurations, such as 3-hex and 24-hex pieces for custom terrain. The SotM master set DOES contain common squads. Also, it has fewer terrain tiles than the RotV master set. Although two sets of a common squad is workable, a lot of people (myself included) prefer to use quite a few more in their armies. Maps made with a single SotM can be quite cramped - so many here like to combine it with RotV or a second SotM. |

I would it up at least one or a few more
the terrain alone is worth it for that price man.. esp since ye get about half that in the Sotm set. cheers Rod good trades:Caravaggio, Gabbi, Drfeelgood, aljovin, vydar, rrhino, boom, Pallindromemaster, spidysox, Eckels, wytefang, Rym, Armegeddon, Fatboy Chubby, Forgehammer, Grison |

I'd go for getting some other types of terrain packs before buying a third MS. Maybe the tundra set or the road to the forgotten forest? The lava pack is cool too but you don't get as much out of it for your money.
Long live Heroscape. |

I believe most get multiples for the terrain. RotV at 20 bucks is almost a must buy if you are planning to be big into Scape. If you compare the fact that RotV comes with 4+ times as much terrain as the 'terrain' expansions you quickly see how nice it is to find a 20 dollar MS.
I picked up 2 more at the 20 dollar price point. I plan to keep them sealed just in case it goes out of print for an extended period and the price skyrockets. This is not the path I thought. This is not the place I sought. This is not the dream I bought, just a fever of fate I've caught. |

If you ever browse the Maps thread and see some of the monsterous creations other Scapers have made, you'll see what I mean! Welcome ot the boards. |

If you ever plan on running a tournament, grab more MSs. If you want to get some friends into the game, give them a MS. If you want to build the United States in hexes, buy more MSs. If you want to include Guam, buy a SotM.

I finally ended up with 4 RotV's, plus some of the extra decorative expansions. Maps I see made with more than that generally take up more space than the table I have to work with (I can fit 39 staggered x 24 straight or 34 straight x 28 staggered).
I could go longer if I added to the length of the table, but in general I think very long maps are a bad idea because it forces the armies to travel too much. By the way, a straight hex takes up about 1.75" inches. A staggered hex takes up 1.5". |

If I were you I would snag the MS at the low price. You can never have too much Terrain. You can on the other hand have to many figures to fit on the board and still have fun. Do you should buy the MS.

$20 for a RotV is a great deal. Buy it and make the figures into customs.

Ok...I got the MS. Was still sitting on the shelf in the KMart when I went back today to get it so...
Unfortunately, they have Wave 5 expansions as well, and I'd like to grab them, but I'm trying to only get expansions at ~$10 each. Another local store had Orm's Return...debating if I really want a pack of 5 uniques...that was regular price as well ($20)...so debating. |

I avoid paying more than $10 for figure packs as well.
Raknar's Vision is worlds better than Orm's Return for 5 large heroes, if you have a choice between the two. |
