Stealth leap question

Monks can leap over water. But can they start their leap on water - like leaping out of it?
Imao, they shouldn't be able to do it. They should have ground beneath their feet to leap.

Stealth Leap
Instead of their normal move, any or all Shaolin Monks may Stealth Leap. Stealth Leap has a move 3. When counting spaces for a Monk's leaping movement, ignore elevations. A Monk may leap over water without stopping, pass over figures without becoming engaged, and leap over obstacles such as ruins. A Monk may not leap more than 12 levels up or down in a single leap. If a Monk is engaged when he starts to leap, he does not take any leaving engagement attacks.

Yup - funny picture there but hey, those monks have some pretty impressive training.

The monks aren't even in the water...they are just floating above it...you must trust in the power of Wuxia!

On a serious note though, I would say they could jump out of water since you don't normally count the space a figure is standing in but the space they are moving to for movement effects....and of course, just for the coolness factor.

I'd concur - they can jump out of water. Imagine the special effects of water flying everywhere and when the opponent wipes the water from his his face . . . the monk is gone!!!

The water in itself could be shallow enough where they can stand.

I concur- when figures are in the water hexes it may be deep enough to slow/hamper movement but no one is swimming in those hexes. I believe the implication is that the water hex represents shallow water (river, stream, beach, or ponds). I believe deep water is represented in one of the scenarios (something about deep water holes in the riverbed swallowing whole units). What does this mean? Monks have something to jump off of to leap out of the water with (ie. the river bed). If that is reading too much into the water hex then just go watch Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon- or better yet Hero to see why monks don't even need solid ground to jump from (and please don't talk about realism in a fantasy board game with dragons, trolls, and whatnot).

Hmm, heavy snow slows down movement but shallow water completely stops it - how can movement in water be so slow if they are not swimming in it??? Oh well...
Let them leap out of water - it must be the power of Wuxia then

Well, the shallow water might still be up to a figure's neck, and the heavy snow might only be like knee-deep.

If you want an explanation, at least....that's how I'd look at it.
