This is my terrain that I asked you to paint for me, right? Looks neat! Not exactly like a true lava set, but I not complaining, since orange is my favorite color!

It's been a while since I've had any new custom stuff to show. Grishnak posted a pic of his lava tiles in his custom thread but hasn't had the time to post a tutorial. I asked him if it was OK if I reverse engineered his tiles and made my own. I think I came pretty close! Anyway, here is a tutorial.

Step one:
I spray painted the tiles with a yellow spray paint.



Step two:
I glued some crushed kitty litter to the tiles for the lava field tiles.




Then I sprayed the kitty litter with some water to help with the absorption of the glue. Basically the water helps to draw the glue up into the litter.

Step three:
I started the first color in a three part blend. The first is orange to transition from the yellow. I only painted it around the edges of the kitty litter. The next two colors also don't go all the way to the edges that way you can see the transition.

Next is red ochre. When I painted this I really had to mash the brush into the litter so it would cover all the little hard to reach areas.


And last is black. This color only got brushed onto the surface letting a little bit of red show through as if the lava was glowing underneath.



Step four:
Brush on some orange to the sides so when the tiles are stacked it isn't just plain yellow and looks more like flowing lava.




Step five:
Now for the molten lava. After the initial coating of yellow I decided that a base of orange would have been better. Then I sponged on the yellow.



And then sponged on some white. Just a little bit.

After completing this project I think I would have done things differently. First, I would have glued the kitty litter down and then spray painted the base color of yellow. The rest would be the same. And on the molten lava I would have started with the base of orange instead of yellow.

Hello Raudulfr,

Really cool. What kind of Modge Podge do you use? Does it make the structure solid or does it still have some flexibility? Michaels has
a few different kinds available like a glossy or a matte kind. I have been using glue gel to seal my carved foam but I'm beginning to think it has too
much give. Thanks Glenn

I use the Matte finish Mod Podge. Although I don't think it makes a difference which type you use if you are going to paint it later. It does have some flexibility after it dries. Which is why I like it.

They look great, but do they connect properly? In the pics it looks kinda like they aren't locking together completely.
