My primary incentive would be to make it easier on the officials. No determination of football moves, or whether the ball shifted on the ground. Just one test - was possession acquired. THAT said: It would indeed mean more fumbles, although not a LOT more, because you still need posession. This is a point against it in terms of ease of enforcement, though. |

Re: Sports: NFL
You would have a completed catch but not possession? I do not understand.

Re: Sports: NFL
I agree with the second part.
In this hypothetical rules setup, establishing possession would be the same as completing the catch (assuming no OOB). There would not be a ton of new fumbles because in the large majority of incompletions, the receiver never acquires possession, even briefly. Whether the new "did he establish possession before he coughed it up" ambiguity would exceed the "did he make a football move" current ambiguity, in terms of the number of controversial plays, is debateable. FWIW, you could get rid of the "maintain possession through the ground" part of the current rule, but keep the "football move" part of the current rule, and then you end up with no new fumbles. |

Re: Sports: NFL
Sorry I can't any list seriously that has Trent Difler as the #2 clutch QB in playoffs. Even being a Rams fan, I would not have Kurt Warner that high, considering he didn't come through on 2 out of 3 SuperBowls. My all time list for clutch QB (not just post season) would be 1. Montana 2. Brady 3. Elway 4. Marino 5. Staubach If it was just post season I would agree that Eli is on the list.

Re: Sports: NFL
The torn muscle thing is kind of crazy. No wonder his deep passes were so erratic late in the season - tough to throw deep without strength in your plant leg.
Also, kind of crazy that it was kept (mostly) hidden for the better part of two months. All we heard was "thigh injury", not "torn quad and tons of swelling". I could honestly see other teams complaining about the deception, although he was on the injury report. |

Erm, is that a Patriots fan calling shenanigans on another team's deceptive use of the QB's name on the injury report?

Wow, Packers putting it to Seattle so far. A lot of game left to play, but wow.
