Anticipated Strategy: The plan is to slow-roll the Romans forward, using the MRT on the flanks.
I want to send BA forward to grab a glyph, at least until the MRT/Romans can push forward to assist.

Turn 1: Doug moves up MBS to height. Filthy moves BA towards the right-side glyph.
Turn 2: Doug moves WE into water to overlook glyph. Rising out of the river's depths, the WE waits for prey. Filthy moves MRT to waterline.

Turn 3: Doug moves Anubians to waterline. Filthy moves BA to height.

Turn 1: BA takes glyph (Dagmar; Initiative +8 ); MBS grabs other glyph (Ivor, range+4), shoots at Raelin, rolls 12 for Paralyzing Stare, 1 skull to 2 shields, so no dice there.

Turn 2: MRT engage MBS, inflict 1 wound, third MRT shoots at Water Elemental.

BA activated, but stays on Glyph. Doug: Anubians roll 17 for Unleashed Fury, rush to engage BA on glyph, 1 wound inflicted on BA.
Turn 3: Filthy uses Warlord bonding to attack MBS, but MBS defends. Doug moves up Wolves of Badru and Khosumet.

Round 4:

Turn 1: MRT kills MBS and 1 Anubian, but lose BA bonding. Doug loses OM on MBS.

Turn 2: Mittens grabs range glyph, Romans move up. WE launches water baloon at BA, but misses.
Turn 3: MRT kill 1 Anubian with the assistance of the range glyph;

Anubians roll 19 for Unleashed Fury; 20 with Khosumet's bonus, so adding +8 to attack...BA devoured.

Round 5:

Initiative Doug
Turn 1: Doug launches another Anubian attack, killing 1 tribesman and claiming the coveted initiative glyph.

MRT respond by claiming height and killing wolf on the glyph.
Turn 2: Doug moves up Khosumet and wolves, taking temporary cover behind the protection of the wall. Raelin moves up to protect her front line charges.
Turn 3: Wolves strike back! Khosumet kills 1 MRT, and pounce claims another.

Mittens responds by killing Khosumet (3 skulls to 0 shields...).
Romans engage lone wolf, but the tough wolf-mother survives 4 attacks from determined romans.

Round 6

Turn 1: Mittens kills a wolf, lone wolf again survives roman onslaught!

Badru attack Mittens and Romans, but fail to kill or wound anyone.
Turn 2: Mittens kills one Badru, lone wolf finally succumbs to roman attacks. Anubians respond by attacking Mittens, but fail to kill. One Anubian grabs the initiative glyph.

Turn 3: MRT move up from start zone; Badru move up.

Round 7

Turn 1: Mittens kills an Anubian from height. Romans attack an Anubian, but fail, and another roman grabs the range glyph.

Doug responds with Anubians, and rolls a 20 for Unleashed Fury! Anubian on glyph risks engagement strike from roman (no hit), and rushes to attack mittens with 9 attack die.; Mittens takes 5 wounds, but manages to survive.

Turn 2: Mittens kills the offending Anubian, Romans grab initiative glyph and move up 2 legionnaires from the start zone.
Badru Wolves pounce on the smitten Mittens and remove his scaled hide from this world.

Turn 3: MRT kill 2 wolves from range. Last Badru wolf pounces on the hapless roman on the initiative glyph, killing him dead.

Round 8

Initiative Doug
Turn 1: Anubian attacks lone Roman, but fails. Roman responds by attacking Badru, but fails; Romans bring up fresh reinforcements.
Turn 2: Last Badru kills engaged Roman. MRT respond by killing The Last of the Anubians.

Turn 3: Move WE onto water space and await the onslaught. MRT kill last wolf.

Round 9

Initiative Filthy
Turn 1: MRT use range glyph to snipe one Water elemental.

Final WE charges the MRT nest, but concealment saves a lucky brave (19 rolled; first time concealment has ever worked for my mohicans).
Turn 2: MRT kill the elemental, in a haze of musket smoke and war whoops.
Game over; victory laurels go to Filthy.

Hindsight:

Doug: That blasted river slowed my wolves down way to much. I should have kept MBS back and used his range, rather than rushing him forward to his doom.
I should have spent first rounds rushing wolves past the river, and then engaging the MRT quickly, as well as Raelin.

Filthy: The MRT and mittens performed admirably. Not sure if the romans were a wise choice on this map.
Mittens bonding was nice, but another squad of MRT, as well as Theracus, might have been a better investment.
Still, I can't complain about the outcome. I sweated out some of the Anubian rolls, but luckily there was usually only 1 near enough to attack anything.
Mittens fell, but he took a few with him (about 115 points of wolf-flesh); the scout movement bonus paid off as well.

Nice battle report, Filthy! Those Wolves took down quite a number of figures before they fell, including Mittens. And the way that Mittens barely survived that first 9 attack Wolf was awesome!

Excellent report! I'm glad that river caused some frustration - that's what its there for!

Melee has a tough time on that map since it's long and narrow, and they struggle to get reinforcements up. If a ranged squad just charges for the plateau like your Mohicans did, it's trouble if they try to mass up. Raelin helps there, though.

I'm glad you enjoyed the map!

I finally took the time to start the River of Blood campaign, and I wanted to incorporate my newest figure:Agent Skahen, compliments of the
2010 GenCon Fantasy Draft Results. I drafted the following 500 point party:

Thorgrim (the old salt: defensive padding and decent stats)
Major X17 (the beefcake of the group; he can absorb melee damage and set up targets for the agent)
Heirloom (ranged special, as well as Mage Hand, which will come in handy)
Rhogar (healing and solid stats)
Agent Skahen (the ranged attacker)


For room 1, we chose the following 250 point drow-centric build:

Drow x2
Pelloth
Isamu 250

Here is the crawl, in 3 megapixel glory:

Round 1:

Baddies get initiative. The Major shuffles forward to a good choke point, while the drow move up in their silent but deadly way. Engagement
ensues, but no wounds are dealt, mainly due to Hide in Darkness.

Skahen take some shots at the Drow, dropping one in his tracks, while another Drow tries to flank the party. However, it is for naught, as
Skahen picks him off.

Skahen's two kills also allow Heirloom to move closer to the treasure glyph via Cover Fire.

Round 2:
The drow win inititive again.

The drow continue to hack away at the major, but they can't penetrate his seemingly unpenetrable armor in melee.

Heirloom uses Mage Hand to bring the treasure glyph into adjacency. He then attacks the advancing drow, but to no avail.

The drow respond by charging Skahen and double-teaming the major.

Nothing gets through, though, and Thorgrim moves up to bolster the agent's defense.


Round 3:
Drow take initiative yet again.

Pelloth moves up and tries Lolth's Wrath on the major, which fails to dent his armor. Skahen responds by blasting the two nearest drow into
oblivion.

The remaining drow regroup and advance, and Heirloom uses the momentay lull to disarm and then pick up the treasure glyph...Which turns out to
be a healing potion.

Frustrated by his lack of success, Pelloth blows up the final drow, which puts one wound on the major.


Round 4:
The party finally wins initiative, and it is time to clean up the scraps.

The dented major puts the squeeze on Pelloth, good enough for 3 wounds.

Pelloth stikes back futily at the enraged major, and SKahen steps in to finish him off. Her second shot causes the crafty ninja to vanish
into the darkness.

Pelloth had OM 3, so Skahen gets 2 more shots at the ninja, which triggers vanish and moves the ninja closer to an unsuspecting target...

Round 5:
Isamu wins initiative, and says a silent prayer to his ancestors. He will soon be joining them.

Isamu works his way behind Heirloom and attempts a stab in the back, but Warforged Resolve is resolute in the matter.

Skahen responds by blasting the ninja into the netherworld.


This was an easy victory for the adventurers, with Rhogar snoozing in the start zone. Let's hope their luck holds out in the remaining rooms.

I really like that team you've got there. Skahen is great in the dungeon, as is Major X17. It'll be interesting to see how they do in the next room...

Thanks, all. A 3 megapixel phone-cam can be powerful in the right hands...Of which mine are not.

Room 2 is going to be tougher, as I want to draft a screen for the hydra (unless Mrs. Filthy wants to handle the dark side...Then I suspect Agent Carr and some other filler will join ye ole hydra).


PS-Heirloom is such a cool sculpt: nice paint job, cool pose...He really shines when compared to some of the other D2 sculpts.

Another day, another crawl. The adventurers continue their, well... adventure in Room 2 of the River of Blood.

Adventurers continued from Room 1:
Agent Skahen, Rhogar, Thorgrim, Heirloom, Major x17


Baddies:
Rats x1, Marro Warriors, Warden 816, Hydra

Round 1 - Evil wins initiative


The rats move out.


Heirloom takes the high ground and summons a Treasure Glyph from the foul waters.


The rats swarm Heirloom.


However, Heirloom retaliates by frying one into oblivion.


The hydra moves up behind the cover of the rock outcrop.


Major X17 grabs the glyph adjacent to Heirloom...Talisman of Defense!


The bolstered Major then kills a rat, causing 2 to scatter ever closer.


Round 2 - Bad guys again win initiative.


Defense Talisman be damned! The hydra reaches over the rats to kill the Major and land two wounds on Heirloom.


Thorgrim moves up and claims one of the hydra's gleaming heads.


The hydra retaliates by putting 2 wounds on the viking


Heirloom uses his healing potion to remove two wounds. However, his attacks against the hydra are fruitless.


The Marro Warriors take advantage of the hydra's distraction to spread out and move into a better position.


Skahen moves up and grabs the Major's Talisman of Defense...


And then drops a rat, invoking scatter, but thinning out the rat salad.


Round 3 - The adventurers win initiative.


Skahen kills the final rat and uses Cover Fire to move Heirloom to the distant safety of a shadow tile.


Rhogar charges the hydra and removes another head.


The hydra responds by placing a wound on Skahen (the Talisman of Defense and adjacent Thorgrim saved her from additional wounds)


The Marro strike force removes Thorgrim from the equation.


Round 4 - The baddies claim initiative.


The hydra gouges 3 wounds out of Rhogar.


Rhogar responds by ending the hydra's reign of terror.


Baddies lose the next OM on the hydra. Rhogar moves adjacent to Heirloom, and the MW put another wound on the dragon kin.


Skahen calmly lines up the warriors in her iron sights. The result: two dead marro.


Round 5 - Adventurers roll big and win initiative.


Skahen finishes off the remaining two marro warriors (OMs lost on the marro)...


And moves to a better location, yielding a long-range shot at the Warden. However, his armor holds fast.


Ignoring the agent, the Warden fires at a juicier target: Heirloom. The hit is made.


Round 6 - Adventurers win initiative.


Heirloom charges the Warden's perch, taking advantage of the shadow tile. His attack fails to penetrate the Warden's armor.


The Warden retaliates with his Axe, but fails to wound Heirloom. Skahen ends it all with a blazing shot.


Skahen's 2 skulls, to the Warden's 0 shields, drops the soulborg like a bad habit.


Thanks to Second Wind, the Major and Thorgrim come back with just two wounds each. They live to fight another day.
