Frostbite

This one is completely untested - you've been warned. I wanted to make a tight map that really makes you think about how you move. I like the look of the map but testing will have to wait for a few more months, unfortunately. Feel free to post feedback.

Swamp Gas 2.0

This is my attempt at a 2.0 version of Swamp Gas. My thoughts, and the feedback that came from the BoV judges, was that there was little reason for melee armies to use the side paths, resulting in a tough slog for those builds against ranged. I've made some significant alterations, moving the glyphs to the outside and creating a lava field bridge that connects the middle ground to both outside plateaus. I've also removed all jungle pieces from around the central heights as they don't really need the extra protection. I think the result should be more satisfactory all around.

Swamp Gas 2.0 - added 1/19/10


Requires 1 SotM, 1 VW, and 1 TJ.

Noctis

And finally my first attempt at a map incorporating the new master set tiles. It's not a true dungeon as there's no scenario and it's built as a symmetrical tournament-style map. I like the way this one came together but I'm not sure yet that the shadow spaces are positioned optimally.

Frostbite: Compact and interesting. Two vital ingredients for the list of maps I have to come up with for TotalCon coming up in February.

I'll be setting this one up to see how it plays (which of course is the most important ingredient).

Looks great on the surface.

EDIT: Currently Frostbite is listed as 1 RotV and 1 TT, but you have a FoTA in there as well if I'm not mistaken.

You have some cool stuff going on here Mad Wookie. I first saw Noctis in this tournament thread. Unfortunately they didn't have the maker listed and I couldn't figure it out. I accidentally posted the question in the wrong thread, but by the time I had it figured out it was too late.

It's the third link under the maps section.

I mentioned the issue of shadows in my last blog post (which I invite you to comment on, as it pertains to maps post-MS3). Basically, I suggested making them appear as they would in nature. If you look at Swamp Thing, you can see some shadows. I'd use that effect, as though a light were shining across the map.

Noctis will also be used at the First Maryland event 2010 on Feb. 13th. I just set it up last night for the first time and it looks great. Can't wait to see how it plays.

I just finished reading the 4 extant books in Jack Campbell's Lost Fleet series. The first book, Dauntless, opens with the captain and a number of staff officers being summarily executed during "negotiations". This map brought it immediately to mind. It also opened my mind to the Pandora's Box of scattered start zone hexes. Again, your maps are works of art, and I'd like to see a "hybrid" tournament map from you featuring a blend of all the terrain/glyph elements from all the master sets and expansions.

I thought I was going to be able to make this one, but with the reschedule there's no way. I haven't been to an event since the one VitM held over the summer - I missed every one of the fall events.

I toyed around with this. The challenge I think is that often the best place for shadow tiles is in areas that need the boost, which isn't necessarily near LOS blockers and sometimes might be right in the middle of open areas. It's an odd disconnect between the aesthetics and the gameplay. On Noctis, the shadow tiles are in either the lowest spots of the map, or next to the highest spots. Aesthetically it doesn't quite fit but I don't think I'd move them.

This is a fun map - it's one of my favorites right now. Any army that's less than 24 spaces needs to give thought to how they're approaching the middle - you don't want to concede the high ground, but you also don't want to needlessly throw away figures in an indefensible position.

After the reschedule it looks like I won't be able to make it to Maryland either. Hopefully somebody else steps up and brings Noctis. The good news is I am working on a tournament in Philly in April. Hopefully it works out and you can make it.
