Re: Raudulfr's Custom Terrain (update 4-24)
Yep, Xacto and then sand them slightly to make them flat. Or if you have a small, detail cutting saw, that might work.
Where the small piece meets the larger piece in the middle, I'd try to follow the contour of the dowel by sanding the end with rolled up sand paper at about the same diameter as the dowel. You want as much material touching as you can for a good solid connection. |

So your saying make it fit partailly around the larger dowel?

Exactly. Make the end of the short piece follow the contour of the dowel.

Hey im thinking of making thoes stone walls you just poasted recently, and i was wondering how tall are the walls and also did you use the 3 horizontal lines that stretch across each one as a height mark? Thanks in advance.

You know, I didn't think of showing the height until after I built them. They are 4 bricks high in the middle but are actually 3 tiles high. Next time I'll be sure to show their height! Thanks Platapus.

Re: Raudulfr's Custom Terrain (update 4-24)
So, when are you going to make a board showcasing all of your terrain you've made. That would be one heck of a board.
I like those stone walls, will have to make some myself. As for the ruins and pillars on page 20, definitely making some of them! Remind of the Mayan ruins. Keep up the great work. |

Re: Raudulfr's Custom Terrain (update 4-24)
The old wall was done with green florists foam. I cut the basic shape out with a simple box cutter-type knife. Then I built up the wall. When the shape was how I liked it, I started to carve out the shape of the bricks using the same knife. As I got down to details I switched to an X-acto knife. I added the crumbled pieces after the piece was carved to take up some of the empty hex spaces. The last step was to add the tiles which were made from sheet foam.
Florists foam is soft and needs to be strengthened to prevent damage. I did this using watered down Mod Podge letting it soak in real good. Several coats a necessary in my opinion. When I painted it I added sand to the base coat to give it some texture. Last edited by Raudulfr Shieldcrusher : June 17th, 2009 at 01:59 PM. |

Re: Raudulfr's Custom Terrain (update 8-19)
HOT LAVA DEATH!
It's been a while since I've had any new custom stuff to show. Grishnak posted a pic of his lava tiles in his custom thread but hasn't had the time to post a tutorial. I asked him if it was OK if I reverse engineered his tiles and made my own. I think I came pretty close! Anyway, here is a tutorial. Step one: I spray painted the tiles with a yellow spray paint. ![]() ![]() Step two: I glued some crushed kitty litter to the tiles for the lava field tiles. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Then I sprayed the kitty litter with some water to help with the absorption of the glue. Basically the water helps to draw the glue up into the litter. ![]() A bunch of tiles: ![]() Close up: ![]() Step three: I started the first color in a three part blend. The first is orange to transition from the yellow. I only painted it around the edges of the kitty litter. The next two colors also don't go all the way to the edges that way you can see the transition. ![]() Next is red ochre. When I painted this I really had to mash the brush into the litter so it would cover all the little hard to reach areas. ![]() And last is black. This color only got brushed onto the surface letting a little bit of red show through as if the lava was glowing underneath. ![]() Step four: Brush on some orange to the sides so when the tiles are stacked it isn't just plain yellow and looks more like flowing lava. ![]() ![]() Step five: Now for the molten lava. After the initial coating of yellow I decided that a base of orange would have been better. Then I sponged on the yellow. ![]() ![]() And then sponged on some white. Just a little bit. ![]() ![]() The sponge: ![]() And here are some fun pics to show off the work! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() After completing this project I think I would have done things differently. First, I would have glued the kitty litter down and then spray painted the base color of yellow. The rest would be the same. And on the molten lava I would have started with the base of orange instead of yellow. |
