A Hero Stands Tall: Chapter 31 (Part 3/3)

As the battle raged on throughout the field, a lone figure stands close to the forests edge. He watched as the battle unfolded, however the only thing he focused on was Drake. He watched as Drake easily dispathed four of the wolves that surrounded him and was moving on to the remaining three. The figure folded his arms and looked on as the battle continued, watching and waiting.

I turned quickly to my right as a wolf came at me. When I turned he stopped and jumped back. The three remaining wolves began to circle me. I have already killed four of the wolves. They came at me with blind rage, not caring for their own safety. The last three were smart and were waiting for the best and right opportunity to strike. I readied myself for them to make their next move. The three wolves stopped and all lunged at me at once. The closest I quickly focused on. I turned to meet him, but he stopped and jumped back to avoid my blade, I saw why. The second wolf lunged at me with claws raised. I jumped back but the wolf caught my side. Four claw marks were on my side. The third jumped in and tackled me. I was forced to step back as the wolf continued to push me. I saw my chacne and I aimed low at its left leg. The sword hit, the wolf howled and fell onto one knee. I quickly raised my sword and stabbed it in the side of its neck. The wolf gagged and stopped breathing. I pulled my sword out and it was gone. The other two wolves howled in rage and charged at me. The closest one slashed forward with its claws. I was able to deflect or dodge most of the strikes but I needed to find an opening. I quickly dodged the next blow and kicked him out of the way. The next wolf came at me and I dodged his claws. I saw an opening and I took it. I slashed my sword towards its leg and the blade met flesh. I cut at his thigh and it went deep. The wolf howled in pain and I pulled the blade out. The wolf stumbled to the ground, crasping his wounded leg. I rasied my sword to finish him when I heard a cry close by. I turned in time to see the wolf charged straight at me. I lunged my sword forward and the wolf tackled me. We both land on top of a corpse, the wolf landing on top of me. It didn't move and I saw the blade pierce its chest. Even though the wolf was gone its eyes remained starring at me. It made me feel uneasy. I lifted my foot and pushed the wolf off.

I stood up and saw the six dead wolves around me. I saw the wounded wolf still moving. I headed over and the wolf growled at me. I placed my foot on its chest and my sword was at its neck, the blades tip just touching the skin. The wolfs ears went back, it curled its lips and snarled at me. I wanted to kill the wolf and get it over with but I stopped myself when I felt a presence watching me. The wolf turned its head toward the forest. I followed it gaze and my heart stopped when I knew I was right. Within the tree line a dozen wolves stood. None moved and all stood silent. What really caught my attention was the wolf in front of the group. He wore armor that I have not seen before. In one hand he carried a small shield, and in the other a strange curved blade. The lead wolf starred at me, wondering what I was about to do next. I swallowed hard and thought what they might do if I killed the remaining wolf. I looked back down to the wolf and he continued to stare out towards the others. I took a deep breath and lowered my sword to my side. I lifted my foot off of the wolf and stepped back. The wolf turned and starred at me. It ears were forward and its snarl was gone. I could tell that confusion was all over it face. I took a few more steps back and the wolf rolled onto its side. The wolf was on all fours and began to hobble its way towards the forest. It stopped and looked at me before continuing on and disappearing into the forest. I turned to see the other wolves still standing where they were. I sighed with relief that they didn't come at me.

A horn was sounded behind me and the lead wolf turned toward its direction. Without a second thought the wolf went toward the noise, the other wolves quickly followed. I turned toward the sound and the horn blew again. On the hills I saw hundred of vikings and Scots heading down and charging into the flank of the enemy. I noticed Concan leading the charge and directing the forces. I noticed the kyrie warriors decending from high above and dealing blow after blow against the blue skins. A few even picked up the surprised warriors, flying high into the air with the struggling cargo and dropping them down to the battle below. I turned toward the left flank and saw numerous warriors and wolves heading to meet the new threat. I made my towards the flank and saw bard amongst his own vikings. When I got close he saw me he smiled and waved me over.

"Its good to see you in one piece Drake!"

When I was close to him he slapped me on the back. Pain shot through me and I didn't realize how sore I was. I quickly ignored the pain and focused on Bard.

"Oi, what happen there?" He pointed at my shirt and I noticed the claw marks.

"Its just a scratch, nothing bad Bard." I shook my head and ignored the wound.

"I need you to spare some of your men to help support the center. My men need aid desparetly."

Bard smiled at me again. "Don't worry, I can spare you some of my berserkers. Besides those blue skins were nothing and the only real challenge were those wolves. My lads can help you out."

"And mine as well!" A deep baritone voice called out from behind. I turned and saw a knight walking towards me. He carried his helmet in one and a warhammer in the other. His hair was black and his eyes were a deep brown. He stopped in front of me and I noticed many blood smears and dents on his armor. I guess he must have gone though most of the fighting.

"So you must be the commander who control the knights on this flank?" I asked.

"Correct. I am Sir Galahad. My men and I have dealt with many of the beasts here. What is your instruction and we shall follow."

He looked decent enough and seemed to command much authority amongst the other knights. I guess Denrick chose the right man for the job.

"The center is in need of more reinforcements. Can you spare any to help us out?"

Galahad nodded and turned toward a group of knights behind him.

"Sir William! Sir Robin!"

Two knights hurried towards us and stopped in front of their commander.

"I need you two to grab twenty of our finest troops we have. Hurry, for time is of the essence and we need to aid our allies quickly!"

The two knights nodded and headed off to pick the troops out. I suddenly felt the ground shake. Bard and Galahad noticed this too.

"Ah lads. I think we may have a bigger problem." Bard turned around and I followed his gaze. I saw the large creature and its rider tearing through the ranks of knights and vikings. Most were able to get out of the way. Those that didn't make it were stomped by the creatures massive feet or met at the end of the riders spear. Bard hefted his axe and Galahad placed his helmet back on. I readied my sword and we all waited for the monster to come toward us. When the monster got close I quickly spoke.

"Alright then, when I say go, we'll take him togeth-"

'We'll take him now!"

Bard cries out and charges forward. I yelled at him and chased after him, Galahad quickly followed behind. Bard and some of his vikings charge in on the beast. The creature lowered its head and smashed it against the oncoming vikings, knocking them back. Bard cries out and charged in with his axe. The monster stopped and rammed its head against him, flying him back and landing twenty feet away. The rider began to laugh, raising his spear in triumph

"Split up!" Sir Galahad yells out.

We both split and went in opposite directions. I took the right side and the monster and its rider focused on Galahad and his knights. As the rider and its mount focused on Galahad I realized that I was standing behind them. A single thought came to me and I dreaded the idea. Without hesitation I charged forward and rasied my sword. I was going to aim for its legs. When the creature was close I slashed down but the beast stepped forward at the last moment and I only knicked him. The beast cried out, taking a few more steps foward. The rider turned and saw me. He hollered and the beast turned to see me. I saw movement on my right and I turned to see its large tail coming at me.

"I knew this was a bad ide-"

The tail hit my abdomen. My breath came right out of me. I flew back into the air. I landed hard but the force made me bound off the ground. I fell into the ditch and landed in the stream. I coughed up as my breath slowly came back to me. I rolled to my side, pain was still at my lower body and I curled up to ease the pain. The ground began to shake and I saw a large figure in the streams reflection. I turned and the monster landed fifteen feet away from me. Its landing shook the ground and it rippled into me. The beast turned its head and I caught its red eye. The eye starred at me and began to dilate. It opened its maw and showed its large fangs. It leaned foward and roared directly at me.

The sound was deafening, its head nearly a few feet in front of me.

Good heavens! You nearly have us even with the grammar! IMO. Great update, loved it.
I don't know about bumper, but my favorite parts are, oddly enough, those where all the ancient heroes of heroscape meet each other, and the stories concerning them are retold. You just do it really well.
Not much to point out in terms of grammar. Just give me an aspect you want to fix, and I'll show you what needs to be done. It would help if I also knew what tense you want.

My favorite parts then are when the characters give their pre-war-of-the-wellspring stories. I was going to bring this up in the new general discussion thread, but I was wondering if I could use that idea for a story of my own.

The battle scenes are also done well, so they are also on my list. Tying it together, the new chapter is great, I can't wait for more.

A Hero Stands Tall: Chapter 32

The monster roar was deafening. I squinted my eyes from the bellow and I could see its open mouth right in front of me, its teeth mere inches from my face. I fell on my back into the stream. I looked up and the monster stopped its roar. Its head lifted to its full height its upper lip pulled back and showing its fangs. The rider turned to me and saw me on the ground. It laughed and raised his spear high in the air. I sat there, helpless to do anything.

The beast roared out and took a sudden step back. The rider lost his balance and slammed forward in its saddle. The beast turned and I saw an axe buried in the side of its leg. Screams of anger and fury was sounded down the stream. I looked past the monster and saw Bard and more of his vikings heading towards us. The rider quickly regained his composure and he cried out to the new foes. His mount turned and headed towards the oncoming threat. The vikings charged in and surrounded the beast. The leader whirled to one side and then the other, trying to pick out his next target. Bard was off to the side and he turned towards me.

"Drake! Go and help your men! We can handle it from here!" A mans scream caught his attention and the monster struck a viking. The viking was flown towards Bard and he caught him in his arms. The two hit the ground and Bard turned towards me again.

"Go!"

I tried to stand but my body woudn't listen. I looked down and saw that my feet were shaking. I tried to get up but still no movement. I then noticed my right hand and it was shaking as well. I turned my hand and looked at my palm, shaking from side to side. I was cowering. My whole body was cowering and I was not in control. That was the second time in my life that I came close to death, and I was afraid. I felt angry as that I couldn't help anyone. My right hand slowly was making a fist. I continue to hear the cries of the vikings fighting against the leader and his pet. I felt control in my right hand and it was a nice sized fist. My leg was still shaking and without a second thought I punched my own leg. Pain shot through me and I felt in control of my body again from the sudden pain. I got up and grabbed my sword from the ground. I turned and headed up the stream, not giving a second thought of looking back.

As I continued to head upstream the fighting grew louder. As I pushed forward I saw more bodies of the floor of the stream. Many of the bodies were of the blue skins but some were from the minutemen and knights. The blood ran deep and turned the water dark red. I ignored the dead bodies that strewn all around me and continued to move up the stream.

A man cried out above me and I looked to see a minutemen being pushed over by a blue skinned warrior. The two tumbled end of end and slammed into the water below. I hurried over as the Warrior stood on top of the minuteman. I slammed into the warrior and we both land into the mud and water. I quickly got up and jumped on top of the warrior. I placed my blade next to its head. The warrior threw his arm up and grabbed my neck. I placed my sword across its mouth. I placed my hand on the other end of the sword and the warrior cried out at me. I pushed down, the blade going down into its face. The warriors arm flinched and slowly released my neck. I sighed and stood up away from the body. I turned toward the minuteman who was on the ground. He moaned and he tried to get up. I headed to him and helped him up. The man turned to me and I starred in shock. His left eye was missing. A deep cut came along his left eye. His faced was badly beaten and his lips cracked. He was missing his hat and his brown hair was in a mess. Mud covered his shirt and face. He was a mess. I leaned him onto the side of the channel and he took a deep breath. I found his rifle and gave it to him. He leaned onto the rifle still breathing heavily.

"Are you alright!?" I said to the man. He nodded and I turned and noticed a path heading out of the ditch.

"I need you make your way out of here. Get treated back at camp."

"No. I'll stay and fight!"

I turned at him and he looked at me. His one good eye starred at me and I could tell that determination was in him. I shook my head.

"No you can't. Just look at yourself."

The man smiled at me. "You know I maybe be foolish, but I'm not helpless."

His remark caught me off guard. Remebering earlier that I was helpless to stop that monster from getting me. The man noticed this and he chortled. I looked at him and he had a small grin on his face. I sighed and I couldn't argue with him.

"I'll be back in the fight once I catch my breath." The man spoke. I nodded and looked around. The battle was still going on above the creek but none was happening down where we were.

"So what happened?" I asked him. He looked at me and smiled. "When those blue devils came at us I fought like I never fought before. When two came at me at once, that tricky sod." He pointed at the dead body. " Jumped and clawed at my face. It took my left eye and I fought on until the both of us ended up down here."

I looked at his eye again, still swollwen shut. "Does it hurt?"

The man nodded. "A bit, but I should be fine until this battle is over and have it treated."

I nodded back and looked above as more men kept fighting and kept getting closer to us.

"My name's Samuel. Samuel Billings." He raised his hand and I shook it.

"Drake Alexander."

The man nodded and lets go of my hand. A loud voice came over the battle and was calling out to some of the men. I turned to see down the channel and saw someone at the end. It was Concan. He was directing the men and quickly giving out orders. He stood at the edge of the rolling hills. "I have to go, wait here and I'll be back for you."

Billings waved his hand off. "I'll be waiting here." He turned to looked back down the creek from where I came from. His good eye grew wide as he saw something in the distance. A gust of wind came and I turned to where It came from. Another gust of wind came and smacked into me. I stumbled and leaned to the side of the wall next to billings. A shadow came over us and was gone a second later. The radio cackled and I quickly turned it on to hear one of the omnicrons speak out.

"Alexander Commander! Large enemy flyer detected! Its landing towards Concan's positon! It is a-" The radio went silent. I looked up and I saw Concan and his men stagger at the force of wind. A large figure came and turned towards them. I looked closer and my eyes widened from what I saw.

The monster had large claws. Both its neck and tail were long and its body was enourmous, three times the size of the Blue leaders mount. The creature had horns on its head and cheeks and a long snout. Its skin was dark brown maybe even bronze, I couldn't tell. The creature turned and dropped down onto one of the hills. It landed and took a few steps forward to stop its momentum. The battle around me fell silent and the creature raised its head up. It roared out into the sky. Its bellow filled the air, silencing everything around us, the sound made me shudder more than the blue leaders mount. The creatures head looked down, its bright yellow eyes starring out towards the battlefield. It leaned forward towards our forces and fire came from its maw. The flames scorched the earth and was dangerously close to the men who began to scatter.

"Dragon! They have a dragon!"

Men called out from above and battle comenced again.

A dragon, another Dragon!? Aw hell.

Another chapter. Sorry about the wait, had to deal with college work and what not. Here it goes.

"Previously on Battles of Valhalla. Drake came within deaths reach a second time. After Bard and his men distracted the monster, Drake escapes to meet with Concan. On his path through the channel he ran into a solider named Samuel Billings. As the two talked a shadow looms over them. As the massive creature descends from the skies it revelas itself to all that it is a Dragon."

A Hero Stands Tall: Chapter 33

"Well all be damned." Billings said aloud. "In all my life I thought I've seen it all when I met that white dragon. But now this? This is to much."

"Same here." I replied to him.

The dragon rasied its head and took flight into the air. The gust of wind knocked down freind and foe alike. He disappeared into the clouds. I looked up and I couldn't spot him. The men on the ground were disoriented, not knowing where the Dragon would come. Another roar came over the hills and everyone turned towards the sound. A split second later the dragon came over the hill and breathed its fire into the line of soldiers. Men screamed out and scattered to avoid the line of fire.

"I got to get to Concan! Wait here until I get back!" I started to head my way upstream.

"I'll be moving when I get my stregth back!" He called back as I went along. I moved swiftly down the path, stepping over bodies and passing through small battles between groups of the blue skins and Scots, helping whenever I can. As I made my way I saw a path out of the channel. I headed my way towards the path. I stopped when I saw two of the blue skins heading down. They saw me and charged forth. I quickly went at them sword raised. The first rasied his sword and slashed down. I stepped to the side and hit the wall. The warriors blade missed me and I stepped foward and rammed him into the path, knocking his friend behind him. I rasied my sword and stabbed him in the chest. The warrior heaved his breath and was gone. The warrior in the back cried out in rage and jumped forward. He grappled me with his hands and was pushing me back. I quickly punched the warrior but he didn't seem to flinch him but was more angry and showed his filed teeth at me. I raised my head back and head butted the warrior. This time it seem to do the trick. He stepped back, his nose bleeding out every where. He looked at me and charged again. I grabbed his head and slammed it against the wall. I heard a crack and the warrior slumpped to the ground. I saw a bloodied rock where the warriors head hit. I stepped over the two bodies and was out of the channel.

When I was on top I saw the battle was far worse here then it was on the left flank. Dozens of bodies of Scotsmen and knights littered the floor, while hundreds of the blue warriors piled all around them. The fight was still being waged only ten yards away. In front I saw Concan barking out orders for the men to stay in formation. I quickly ran towards him. Another roar from the dragon came from overhead. I stumbled and fell to the ground. I looked up and the dragon went over the heads of the men. The dragon headed up to the sky to make another pass. Concan turned and spread his wings and took flight after it, his sword pointed forward towards its target. I watched as the dragon eyed Concan and turned towards him. Concan cried out and lashed out with his sword. The dragon turned and Concan missed his strike. Concan whirled in the air and took off in pursuit. The dragon flew in the air above us for at least ten seconds. It soon whirled around and breathed fire at him. Concan stopped and the flames came over him but he didn't seem to be in pain. I noticed a blue light that surrounded him and I was not sure what it was. Concan veered right and escaped the flames. I could here the Dragon growl in frustration. The Dragon began to chase after him. Instead of running however, Concan flew straight at him. Concan slashed forward and his sword bounced off one of the Dragons long horns. The dragon flew by and its tail whipped out in front of Concan. The blow knocked him back. His wings curled forward and he dropped a couple of feet. He quickly batted his wings and he stopped his descent. But before he could make a move the dragon came around and stuck him on the back with its claws. Concan plummeted from the sky and down towards the earth. He opened his wings and his body flailed in the sky as he slowed his path down to the ground. He was about fifty feet in the air when he finally stopped. Two kyrie warriors took off and headed toward Concan. I watched as the dragon quickly flew towards Concan with frightening speed. Concan wavered in the air and looked up as the dragon came at him. The dragon whacked him out of the sky with tremendous force. His body flew down like a rock. The two kyrie that went after stopped and braced to catch him. Concan slammed against the two and they fell towards the ground. The three landed hard and the Dragon ascended into the sky.

I quickly got up and went towards them. I was twenty yards away when I saw them. The two kyrie warriors were on the sides and were moving slowly, too stunned to move or react. I watched Concan trying to get up from the ground. There was a small indentation from where he landed. As he stumbled forward he pierced the ground with his sword and supported his weight. As I got closer I saw blood coming down the side of his face. He breathed heavily and couldn't move. The dragon roared and caught my attention. The Dragon was heading straight for him. I ran with all my strength to intercept the dragons target. Concan stood onto one knee and raised his sword towards the oncoming monster. The dragons left claw opened up and was ready to grab him. Concan cried out, ready to face against the dragon once again. I ran headlong into Concan and shoved him into the ground. I turned and the dragons left claw was already on top of me.
