I felt like doing cartwheels when I looked at the movie link and saw that Beorn was cast! I had not heard that previously and was worried that he would go the way of Tom Bombadil and be left out of the story. Beorn has always been one of my favorites in the book and if he were left out I would have been very disappointed.

I was also extremely pleased to see that someone is going to be giving voice to the Necromancer! Can't wait to see what they do there.

I get more excited for this film every time I read more about it.

Can't wait till December.

Specifically, will I see Smaug in the first movie?

The link to the movie wiki says that the second one will start when the dwarves are in Lake Town. So I'm guessing that it will focus on the mountain, Smaug and the Battle of the Five Armies.

For characters who were both in The Hobbit and LotR, yes. Except for Bilbo Baggins who had a new actor playing the younger one while the older one was still played by Ian Holm.

This is just a ploy to squeeze as much money they possible can out of the texts that they have the rights for, sense the Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales (reading it right now and highly recommend it) etc, are off limits. He filmed The Lord of the Rings in 3 movies and now he has to do the Hobbit in 3 movies also, that just seems silly to me. I'll probably end up going to see them, I just hope it's not another LotR trilogy in terms of quality relative to what they could have been.

They have to be over two hours each, because if he only had six hours of film he would have just made two movies like he planed. My guess, 2 1/2 hour each.

I have to admit that I am fairly nervous about the fact that they are splitting it into three movies. I was really happy with the prospect of two movies, as I thought that was going to give them enough time to tell the story they want to without having to cut too much. However, with the three movies, I am worried about them adding in too much unnecessary/noncanonical content (like the tombs of the Ringwraiths).

You know in the Hobbit they made a mistake just by seeing the trailer in the Fellowship begging Gandalf said to Bilbo you haven't aged a day since I saw you last. In the Hobbit they got a younger character for Billbo.
