Sock Puppet: “Hello, everybody! Sock Puppet here, and I’m joined by Bob! Feeling better, Bob?”

Bob: “Yep. I need to remind myself not to eat anything David brings in. I still remember that Vegemite episode.”

Sock Puppet: “What Vegemite episode?”

Bob: “I’m too tired to look back through the thread.”

David: (off camera) “Anybody want some of these crab rangoons?”

Bob: “Shut up, David! Sock Puppet, what do you think of these bank rules?”

Sock Puppet: “I like the setting. I’m not certain the safe cracking is having too much of an impact on the actual battle, but it’s a fun scenario.”

Bob: “I have an idea what David might do in the next group. He’ll feed both teams his crab rangoons, and both teams will race to have their stomachs pumped. Then they’ll all battle at a food poisoning penalty of -2 attack dice.”

David: (off camera) “Hey, that’s a great idea!”

Bob: “Shu-u-u-ut up, please!”

Sock Puppet: “Let’s hope David comes up with something better. Meanwhile, we have to more teams at the bank.”

Team Silver Banshee vs. Team Bizarro

Sock Puppet: “Silver Banshee and Bizarro are taking the safe cracking positions. They’ve been running neck-and-neck, but a solid strike from Bizarro knocks down the vault’s door. Vulture gets the Loot, as his Vulture Grab will enable him to snag the opponent’s Loot!”

Round 1
Sock Puppet: “Silver Banshee follows suit and cracks the vault open. She decides to take the Loot.”

Bob: “Both Bizarro and Silver Banshee exit to their respective Security Rooms.”

Round 2
Bob: “Vulture joins Bizarro.”

Sock Puppet: “Silver Banshee takes to the Lobby.”

Bob: “Bizarro reaches the Lobby and steals one of the bank’s pens. I guess if you have Super Strength, you can snap those things from their chains.”

Sock Puppet: “Ragdoll reaches the Security Room.”

Bob: “Vulture joins Bizarro in the Lobby.”

Sock Puppet: “Ragdoll enters the Lobby.”

Round 3
Sock Puppet: “Ragdoll exits the bank.”

Bob: “Vulture grabs Bizarro and they land in front of Ragdoll. Bizarro argues with him, explaining he can already fly. Vulture wonders if he should’ve signed onto this tournament with a different team mate. Vulture swipes at Ragdoll and delivers a wound (3 left). Ragdoll pulls back using Contortionist.”

Sock Puppet: “Silver Banshee lands in front of Ragdoll and strikes Bizarro. Striking Vulture is futile due to Bizarro’s Villainous Duty ability. Bizarro blocks the attack.”

Bob: “Vulture flies over Silver Banshee and uses Vulture Grab to snag the Loot from Silver Banshee! Vulture flies away! I think he’s going to fly away with all the Loot!”

Sock Puppet: “Ragdoll chases down Vulture. Vulture is just outside range for Bizarro to intercept! Vulture blocks the attack.”

Bob: “Bizarro fails his Freeze Vision on Ragdoll. Bizarro takes a wound breaking engagement with Silver Banshee and rushes to strike Ragdoll from behind. That’s a +2 attack bonus! Ragdoll takes a wound (2 left) and dances down the street.”

Round 4
Bob: “Vulture flies down the street. Somebody needs to stop him!”

Sock Puppet: “Silver Banshee can’t reach Vulture, so she strikes Bizarro. She inflicts a wound (4 left).”

Bob: “Which means Vulture escapes with all the Loot for the victory! Let’s get David out here. Hey, David!”

David (enters): “I thought you told me to shu-u-uu-uuuu-u-ut up.”

Bob: “I apologize for that, Buddy! Listen, this was an interesting battle where Vulture had a pretty huge advantage.”

David: “Yes, that was pretty cool. Keep in mind that I’m not creating these weird scenario settings with any particular figures in mind. After all, think of how well Shocker would’ve done in opening these vaults. You may have forgotten the bind Rhino’s team was in on that freeway. I’m using this first round of the tournament to put my battle mat into action, since I originally planned to play most of my battles on them anyway. That was before I saw all the great C3G Maps. But I’m experimenting with some interesting ideas I think fit within a 2-D map setting.”

Bob: “Interesting. It's neat to have victory conditions that aren't tied to wiping all the other side. Are you going to use the battle mat throughout the tournament?”

David: “Oh, I’ve got a completely different idea for the second round after all the teams from the first round have advanced. I’ll take the action back into the 3-D Heroscape realm when that happens.”

Sock Puppet: “We do have one more team to take their crack at the banks, and that will conclude all the teams on the Evil Side. Then we’ll turn our attention to the newly re-drafted Good Teams.”

Bob: “And I hope you’ll have another interesting setting for us, David.”

David: “We’ve got one more battle in the first round of the tournament with the Evil Teams, Sports Fans! This is David reporting, and I’m joined by my good friend, Bob! Hey, Bob. Try one of these delicious brownies.”

Bob: “Uh, no. I don’t have much luck with you where food is concerned.”

David: “Care for a refreshing beverage?”

Bob: “Nope.”

David: “Breath mint?”

Bob: “Nuh, uhn.”

David: “How about a nice, warm, rusted can of Burt’s Beer?”

Bob (sweating): “Uh, oh. Well, I can’t resist Burt’s. Gimme!”

David: “Enjoy, my friend!”

Bob: glug-glug-glug “Ahhhhhh, thanks! Who is taking their crack at the bank today?”

David: “We have a Doctor in the house, and there’s some Smoke and Mirrors shimmering in the Vault Room at the other bank. Ready?”

Bob: “With a can of Burt’s, I’m all set. Let’s tear that vault open!”

Off-camera announcer: “This special tournament is brought to you by the good folks at Burt’s Beer. Burt’s Beer: If you think battle mats are flat, you should try our beer!”

Team Doctor Octopus vs. Team Mysterio

Bob: “Doc Ock and Pyro are positioned in front of their respective vault doors, and the sound of the siren gets the action underway! David, in his very first turn, Doc Ock ripped 5 wounds into the Vault with his Telescopic Tentacles!”

David: “Four attacks with Super Strength is nothing to sneeze at.”

Bob: “However, the Doc chokes and has to take several turns before he can crack the vault open. Pyro still has work with 7 more wounds to go!”

Round 1
David: “Pyro decides to forfeit the Loot. If the Doc wants to win by escaping, he’ll have to crack the vault open himself. He heads towards the exit.”

Bob: “Doc turns around and steps forward.”

Round 2/3
Bob: “Teams make their way towards one another. David, Doc is going to be deadly with that +2 Loot bonus, so the other team needs to knock it away in a hurry. At the end of the third Round, The Hood reaches range to fire at Boomerang with his Double Attack. He scores a wound (3 left). That triggers Criminal Ambition, which allows him to grant a bonding turn to Doc Ock. However, we’re using your facing rules, David. Since the Doc is behind The Hood, he is out of clear sight!”

David: “That’s correct, Bob!”

Round 4
David: “Boomerang pulls back, but holds The Hood at range and attacks. The attack is blocked, so he gets to attack again with his Returning Boomerang. That inflicts 2 wounds (3 left).”

Bob: “Doc Ock wants in on the action and steps into the Lobby of the other team’s bank. Now he is in clear sight of The Hood!”

David: “Mysterio steps forward and fires at the Doc. It’s 3 perfect skulls, but the Doc blocks! He’s able to hang onto the Loot for now.”

Bob: “The Hood fires at Boomerang. The second attack scores the wound (2 left), and that allows Doc Ock to take a turn with Criminal Ambition! The Ock-tagon engages both Boomerang and Mysterio and hold them in his Cyber Claw. He strikes first at Boomerang with his +2 Loot bonus and takes him down with the second strike. He then strikes at Mysterio and delivers a total of 2 wounds (2 left).”

David: “Pyro enters the Lobby and engages Doc. That’ll put his Engulf ability into play on his next turn. Pyro unleashes his Living Flames at the Doc, but it’s blocked.”

Bob: “The Hood enters the bank and fires at Pyro. Both attacks are brutal and knock him out! That allows the Doc to take a turn, and he strikes at Mysterio. Two strikes take him down. His other two attacks easily turn the Mysterio Holographs into a puff of smoke. Doc advances!”

David: “And that takes care of our Evil Teams for the first round. I’ll come up with something for the next four battles, so stay tuned!”

Programming Note…

Inspired by discussion in C3G about how great it would be to play out a battle in an urban environment with tight alleys and littered with innocent (or guilty) bystanders, I’ve decided to use my battle mat in the upcoming set of battles to depict just such a setting. Since I don’t need to leave the markers on the mat overnight, the actual layout may vary.

I’ve marked the various parts about the map in the photo. Oh, I also need to add some fire escapes to the buildings. Some extra info:

Figures may jump from one rooftop to a same-level or lower-level rooftop separated by an alley space no larger than 2 spaces wide by rolling a number of dice equal to any number of unused movement points. Each shield represents one space the figure can jump. If the figure lacks the number of spaces to make the jump, the figure simply remains at the edge of the rooftop, and the entire movement points are expended.

I’ve mixed a collection of various bystanders. If a figure ends his movement adjacent to a bystander, you reveal it at the end of that figure's turn. If it’s a Thug, it will get an immediate free attack. Thugs remain on the map and will fire on the nearest figure at the end of each round. If it’s a Civilian, ignore. If it’s a Cop, you may place the Cop on the Army Card of the figure. You may remove the Cop from the Army Card to ignore any one wound received. If it’s the VIP, that team wins the game. (Note: a team can still win by taking out the other team, so this victory objective isn’t necessary to win.)

If a figure kills any bystander other than the Thug (directly or indirectly), it immediately takes an unblockable attack die. If a figure kills the VIP, that team loses. At the end of each round, each bystander will be randomly moved on the map after Thugs conduct their fire.

Alleys are considered shadow spaces.

It costs 2 movement points to move from one floor to the next. Figures may move freely within the interior 1st Level and Rooftop, but must remain within the stairwell spaces on levels in between.

Those are just some highlights. I’ll also keep the facing rules I’ve been using. I will also use knockback rules, but figures can’t be knocked off rooftops. The edges of the rooftops will be considered the same as edge of map spaces for knockback purposes, so figures will simply end their knockback there without taking any damage.

I’m looking forward to giving this a run in the next battle!

Bob: “I guess there’s only one way to see how it works. Shall we play?”

David: “Yes, let’s do it!”

Team Shang-Chi vs. Team Aquaman

Round 1
David: “Shang-Chi advances down the main street.”

Bob: “Aquaman is going to be lost on this map, unless he can knock down a fire hydrant. He walks down the alley parallel to main street.”

David: “Punisher enters a building. He’s going to head to the roof to take a sniping position. Rooftops do have a blind spot equal to the difference in levels.”

Bob: “Jocasta joins Aquaman and is adjacent to a bystander. It’s a Civilian.”

David: “It would’ve ended our battle pretty quickly if she revealed the VIP. Shang-Chi enters an alley and checks the nearby bystander. It’s a Civilian.”

Bob: “Jocasta continues down the alley. And now the bystanders reposition.”

Round 2
David: “Punisher takes the stairwell to the roof of a 1-level building.”

Bob: “Aquaman joins Jocasta. The Parked Car and bystander are blocking the alley, so Aquaman chucks the Parked Car down the alley. The car lands with a crash and takes a wound (3 left). Aquaman now must check the bystander. It’s a Cop, which will be placed on Aquaman’s card to ignore one wound!”

David: “Punisher climbs the ladder on the roof up to the 3rd Level.”

Bob: “Aquaman threads through two bystanders to reach the car he tossed earlier. He tosses the car towards Shang-Chi, who is standing in the cross-alley! No damage, but now two cars block the alley. Figures can spend 4 movement points to climb onto the roof of parked cars.”

David: “Shang-Chi can use Phantom Walk to weave his way through the blocked alley and reaches Aquaman. Time for a lesson in Kung-Fu, Grasshopper Aqua! He will attack with +2 dice. Aquaman easily blocks.”

Bob: “Aquaman moves around Shang-Chi and climbs onto the hood of the car to strike down at Shang-Chi. It’s 5 skulls, but Shang-Chi gets an extra defense die due to the shadow space and an automatic shield with Master Martial Artist. Shang-Chi only takes 1 wound (4 left) and is knocked back 4 spaces down the alleyway.”

David: “Bob, the City Rules are running pretty well so far. We will continue this battle tomorrow.”

Bob: “What? You’re not going to stay up late and finish this? Aaaagh!!!”

Team Shang-Chi vs. Team Aquaman (continued)

Round 3
David: “Bob, during the break, I realized that I had forgotten to consider the 2 movement points to change Levels when moving Punisher. I’ve dropped him back to the roof of the Level 1 building. Punisher reaches the roof of the 3 story building.”

Bob: “Jocasta joins Aquaman in the cross alley. The bystander is a Civilian. Jocasta fires across at Shang-Chi, but it’s blocked. She could toss the nearby car, but Aquaman is currently standing on top of it!”

David: “Shang-Chi uses Phantom Walk to bypass Jocasta and climb up the fire escape above her. He strikes down at her with +2 attack. He could attack 3 times, but that’s a risk with Jocasta’s Repelling Force Field. That Force Field can knock back a figure that fails to wound her. He strikes down at her, and his 6 skull strike delivers a nasty 5 wounds to Jocasta (1 left). I think Chuck Norris just pooped in his pants.”

Bob: “Aquaman is really blocked from an approach to Shang-Chi. A Civilian is blocking his ability to climb the fire escape to approach Punisher. He pushes his way past Jocasta and a Civilian, and he enters the 3-story building with Punisher on the roof.”

David: “The blind spots from the roof and Aquaman inside the building will prevent Punisher from sniping from above. However, there are no rooftop blind spots when on a fire escape! Punisher takes to the top of the fire escape and fires his Armor Piercing Rocket down at Jocasta. It’s 2 skulls, which subtracts 2 dice from Jocasta’s roll. Jocasta manages to block the rocket.”

Bob: “Jocasta strikes up at Shang-Chi and delivers a wound (3 left) and knocks Shang-Chi onto the roof of the 2-story building. She then tosses the parked car onto the roof next to Punisher with no damage.”

Round 4
Bob: “Jocasta climbs to the top of the fire escape on Shang-Chi’s building and fires at him. He’s out of the alley’s shadows now! Shang-Chi whiffs defense and takes 2 wounds (1 left). Wow, David, what a brawl!”

David: “There’s action everywhere, Bob. Punisher holds position on the fire escape and fires down at Jocasta with his Assault Rifle. Rat-a-Tat-Tat with three attacks, and the bullets just ping off Jocasta!”

Bob: “Aquaman sprints towards the stairwell, which is way on the far side of the building.”

David: “Punisher loads his Rocket and fires it at Jocasta. It’s 3 skulls, and Jocasta is not in the shadows. It was too much for her, and she falls backwards off the fire escape and collapses onto the street. She really put up a fight, Bob.”

Bob: “Absolutely! Aquaman consider a search for the VIP. However, he decides to head to the roof.”

David: “Shang-Chi can’t jump across to the roof where Punisher is, as it’s a jump from a 2-Level to a 3-Level roof. So he dashes down the stairwell.”

Round 5
Bob: “Aquaman runs along the roof towards the roof ladder.”

David: “Punisher has to climb onto the roof of the car Jocasta tossed and awaits Aquaman’s arrival.”

Bob: “Aquaman reaches the roof.”

David: “Shang-Chi exits the building and approaches a bystander. It’s the other Cop! Perhaps with only one life remaining, the Cop will give him some protection.”

Bob: “That allows Aquaman to approach Punisher and strike up at him. Punisher takes 3 wounds (2 left), but the edge of the rooftop prevents knockback.”

David: “Punisher fires his Assault Rifle at Aquaman. It’s 2 wounds (3 left), 2 wounds reduced to 1 thanks to the Cop (2 left), and the third attack is blocked.”

Round 6
Bob: “Aquaman climbs onto the car alongside Punisher and strikes. It’s a fatal 2 wounds and KO on Punisher! It’s down to Shang-Chi with only 1 life remaining and a 2-life Aquaman! And Punisher took all the Order Markers, so the round belongs to Aquaman! Aquaman runs to the edge of the roof and jumps down onto the street below. He then charges towards Shang-Chi and strikes. It’s 2 wounds, and even the Cop that’s protecting him can’t save him from a K.O.! Team Aquaman advances!!!”

David: “Man, what a battle! Aquaman may have been a fish out of water on the Gritty Streets, but he certainly brought home the… fish sticks? That sounds stupid.”

Bob: “Stupid or not, this was a fun battle.”

David: “I agree, and I’m loving these city rules. One tweak I need to make: I don’t think two figures should be able to block a 2-wide alley. After all, heroes push their way past bystanders all the time and can weave their way between cars. So I’ll say that a figure can pass through another figure or destructible object in cases where a path is blocked, but it costs 2 movement points to move through that figure. Natually, the hero can’t simply end his move on the same space.”

Bob: “That makes sense. Let’s hit the pub and see if they are pouring Burt’s Beer. Good night!”
