Really?? Like I say above, 1411 posts, a lot of chat happens in the title advocacy thread. Heck, Heroscapers is an entire website designed to chat about Heroscape. There is only one type of thread I can really think of that isn't supposed to have chat, and that's display threads for the BoV and the like. (plus the books to some extent...)

The worst part of it is, this creates the need for people to do this, which is just plain sad... I shouldn't have to put a freaking disclaimer on the end of all my posts.

The first one I actually appreciate, it's from a well-known user on this site, and one that I immensely respect. Not only that, but it's nicely worded, and he/she actually SIGNED IT!!! Guess what that does? It lets me send them a PM if I don't understand why they're negging me, and eliminates any or all need for this. Heck, I almost gave the user some posrep for signing it.


The last one is really what sets me off... I'm not whining about anything. I'm a valuable member of this community, (at least I like to think so) with a presence in two projects, one of which I started, map and customs threads, I go to tournaments and am even organizing one. Not to mention, I have 4 bars of green rep, and over 1,700 posts.

Guess what this means? I know how the community works. I've been here for more than a year, and have a pretty darn good idea of what's good and bad. And let me tell you what? That's not whining. I have a right to point it out when some Site Supporter who's looking for a reason to sling around some negrep just because they can, with no good reason.

And guess what? This whole thing could have been kept in private if that first negrepper had been brave enough to add in their name so I could discuss it with them and them alone.

You might want to read the first few posts of this thread. The ones that say DON'T COMPLAIN ABOUT REP and that most admins RECOMMEND NOT SIGNING NEG REP. Also, read the Title Advocacy thread rules, that say KEEP THE CHIT CHAT OUT.

Here's the deal with rep.

If you want positive rep you will get it by posting *constructively*, with respect for your readers and the English language. In time the positive rep, or "boons," will come. Don't post stuff just to get rep, that will tend to backfire.

If you want to avoid negative rep, or "docks," you can avoid them *most of the time* as follows:

1. Treat people with respect.
2. Post in complete sentences.
3. Think about what you're posting. Is it silly? Irrelevant?
4. Don't "necro" a thread unless you have something that adds to the discussion.
5. Don't start a new thread unless you search and find there isn't one there already.
6. Don't start a poll.
7. Don't complain about rep.
8. You'll get them sometimes anyway. You just will.

Number 7 is important. Understand that docks are the way veteran site members, or new guys who have chosen to be site supporters, can express their disapproval for your posts.

They are not supposed to sign those docks. Some do, anyway. But the reason why they aren't is because it would end up in a war of docks. Trust me, I know it would. The stupidest dock I ever got was from somebody who had recently become a site supporter and I'd given him a dock a couple months earlier.

They are anonymous for a reason.

What people don't understand is this part:

What to do when you get a dock:
1. Stop bellyaching. Just stop. Nobody wants to hear it; we've all gotten them.
2. If the dock was fair, and it might have been, accept it as commentary from a member of the community and move on.
3. If the dock was not fair, and it might not have been, ignore it and move on.
4. If you follow my advice on getting boons, above, you will see the little green boxes will outnumber the red boxes. You never know which of your posts will get the boons, but some of them will, if you're being respectful and not whining.

I don't see how spending more time getting worked up about this particular negrep is making your life better.

For what it's worth, I think the initial negrep was excessive, and I wouldn't have given it, but it's technically an appropriate use of negrep. And while I didn't give you negrep for the complaints about negrep, I have given out negrep for similar posts in the past.

The great thing about anonymous negrep is that it circumvents pointless public flamewars. When you complain publicly about anonymous negrep, you undermine this benefit.

The large majority of the negrep I get is intended to express disapproval with me, personally, as opposed to saying my post was unconstructive/poorly written. If you go by what Xotli says, that's technically not an appropriate use of negrep. But whether or not it's "appropriate", there's still a positive effect there for the forums at large. It's better for nastygrams to appear on my control panel than in a public thread.
