Chiefs Tournament Battle Reports *May 1st added*

Well my third tournament and I remembered to write down details! So here it is. Colorado's May 1st 2010 tournament results.
The details were all kill 'em all maps with everyone using 600 point armies.
My army was
Braxas, Airborne Elite, Phantom Knights x2, Axe Grinders of the Burning Forge x2.

Match 1: VS GeneralRolondo
Marro Stingers x3, Minions of Utgar x2, Raelin RotV, Fen Hydra
Map = Vulcan
Well my biggest fear was the minions. I did not want them to catch a hold of my phantom knights so I started the first round by moving braxas turn 1. This baited the minions but I had turn two and three to slow roll the phantom knights to where they minions would have to land on lava for the last turn and risk lava damage. On the second round I got airborne and grenaded some stingers away then the Phantom Knights ,2,and x. Braxas with 3. I was able to bring my second squad of phantoms up and baited the stingers within range with my other squad. After losing one knight my 3 with braxas moved forward and acid breathed all three minions. After that I rushed my phantom knights to remove raelin in 2 turns. The last turn was spent with deploying a squad of axegrinders. Round four braxas was swarmed by the last of the minions but the were quickly melted down by acid. My knights were engaging the stingers and surviving all the attacks.
By round 6 I had lost one squad of knights but quickly dispatched the stingers with braxas. My final turn killed the hyrda via axe grinders.
Win 1-0

Match 2: VS Seth
Major Q9, Major Q10, Zetacron, Minions of Utgar x1, Deathstalkers x1
Map = Chill in the Air
I was fearful of all three robos and the stalkers due to their immunity to acid breath. Round one I baited in the robo heroes with braxas and then deployed both dwarf squads. Round two I used the road boost to quickly rush the robo warriors and by the end of the round and killed both Major Q9 and Q10. I then took 1 stalker and Zetacron in round three with my reaming 4 dwarfs. The last round I brought out Braxas to vaporize the minions for the win. The snow banks that the dwarfs used for HA plus the defense glyph helped a lot as well. Air borne were dropped and grenaded one minion but nothing else.
Win 2-0

Match 3: VS lafleurhero
Tor-Kul-Na, Su-Bak-Na, Marrden Nagrubs x3, Kee-Mo-Shi
Map = Can't See the Jungle
One of my tougher matches I was very scared. Also this army had just given Dok his first loss, in three tournaments, the match before. I stared with my Phantom Knights grabbing a Intercept order causing lafeurhero to loose turn two. He had moved TKN and 3 grubs forward so turn two I targeted the grubs. Turn three he used KMS and I targeted her with the knights bringing her to half life. Round two consisted of KMS Mind shackling my Airborne that had just dropped, I did manage to grenade a couple of nadgrubs though. TKN also continued to kill the airborne. He was so excited that he attacked one of his own mind shackled airborne. But that was just a memory relapse. At least the Airborne had kept TKN from my army. Round three I engaged TKN with
1 dwarf and killed grub with another. My knights failed to kill KMS. Round 4 TKN moved forward but my dwarfs swarmed him quickly and killed him by the end of the round with one braxas attack to finish him off. Now with 2 grubs left, KMS, and SBN I had some hope. I had 5 dwarfs left, 2 Knights, and Braxas with half life. I moved Braxas out to
to bait SBN who came eventually. My Knights finished of KMS. The final rounds I cleaned up the grubs but one. Then Braxas and 1 engaged dwarf took down SBN. With Braxas with 3 lives left, 2 dwarfs, and 1 Knight the game was succeeded.
Win 3-0

Match 4: VS ElderBigDave
Thanos, Marro Dividers x2, Marro Warriors, Deathreavers x2
Map = Invasion
Well this very similar army had whooped me last tournament so I had my doubts. But I was in a high of pride for beating the beater of Dok.
I knew Thanos would be a problem, but I had to get rid of everyone else first. I baited again with Braxas on turn 1. Then moved up my dwarfs to block off the approaching marro. Round two the ariborne dropped and grenaded some dividers and rats. I was able to engage and kill all the marro warriors with the PK's. Thanos took out two Knights. Round three I surrounded Thanos with the dwarfs and took 2 lifes. I lost 1 dwarf. Round 3 braxas vaporized the all the dividers and the PK took out 1 rat and 1 wound on thanos. Round 4 I had lost all but 3 dwarfs to thanos and HA rats. So I engaged Thanos with the PK and Braxas took out all but one rat. The final round I had 2 PK left, with a 1 life thanos and 1 rat to face. Thanos got the better of the rolls.
Loss 3-1

Match 4: VS Revloscaper
Mimring, Greenscales x1, Iskra, Rechets, Wyvern, GIE, Earth Elemental, Sauhuagin Raider
Map = Flooded Temple
I was not afraid in this match. Round one I moved out knights to entice the dragon but the rechets came instead. But i was able to gain height and take 2 lives on Iskra. Round 2 the rechets came to my start zone but quickly fell along with Iskra. round 3 the dragon and friends moved out. I moved the dwarfs with one turn. Then the PK's quickly engaged and took 3 life's. The Airborne were on board but had only killed Iskra's 1 life so far. Round four I finished off Mimring. I had 4 knights left, 2 airborne, and 4 dwarfs. The fireline had done some damage. I used the PK to kill the green scale. Then my dwarfs took the wyvern's life (I was on the wind glyph for that round) and the Earth Elemental. The final round I forced the Ice elemental to engage and killed it. Then finished off the Raider.
Win 4-0

Match 5: VS Daniel
Warriors of Ashra x2, Marro Warriors, KMA, Venom, Spider-Man, Water Elemental
Map = Vesuvian
This army was easy to beat IMO, except for those marvel figures. I baited with Braxas one more time and then rushed the Phantom Knights to kill off the Marro Warriors and KMA. Round two the Air Borne Dropped and mopped up the last Marro Warrior and failed to kill a Water Elemental. Mean while Braxas took out 3 WoA and lost her life to the Marvel Figures. My dwarfs then quickly moved up to attack the marvel figures. After 2 rounds fo cat and mouse I felled Spiderman and Venom. With 3 Phantom Knights left, 1 dwarf, and and airborne. I took the 8 range to finish off the Water Elemental and WoA.
Win 6-1 Myslef and Dok's match is described below.

timing has delayed the championship match between myself and Dok who also left with 5-1. We will be meeting up sometime for the match. The tournament championship match will be

Nice wins, fun reports...And good luck on the championship match. It sounds like Dok is a tough nut to crack!

Indeed, his first tourney I was not at, then the second I played him and got wooped, it was a drafting tourney. Then the last one I wasn't able to play him my record and army were not very good. But ive finally stepped it up and gotten used to the competitive scene!

It took 12 days, but chief paid a visit to casa de dok to play out the finals. Chief's army really has an answer for everything: Braxas for expensive small and medium figures, Axegrinders for the big guys, PKs for entrenched range, and the AE to put the fear of God into ya. I figured the game was going to come down to matchups. I love TKN against Braxas, and PKs against airborne elite, but I had to tread carefully lest I end up with Braxas gassing PKs and TKN mobbed by Axegrinders.

The AE failed to drop in each of the first two rounds, and the result was a very cautious slow-roll by both armies. I posted PKs at most of the high spots on my side of the map, put TKN on the road with his grubbies, put Raelin on the elevated shadow, and managed to get a grub on the unique attack glyph, which slightly reduced my Airborne-phobia. Jeff put an Axegrinder on the move glyph, but collected most of his dwarves in a pod surrounding Braxas on the elevated 7-hexer just in front of his startzone. Both of us made some probing attacks on the other glyph-holder, but it was all blocks.

In round 3, the AE dropped, and things got busy quickly. chief won initiative, but what followed was probably the key turn of the game. The shadow-protected Raelin emerged with only 1 wound from three attacks, and the PKs took out three of four AE on the next turn. Braxas did manage to gas a couple PKs at the end of the turn, but it was cold comfort as the PKs took the move glyph and established board control.

chief rushed in with PKs after that, and despite some TKN stomping, he did manage to eliminate Raelin after a round and change. Meanwhile, though, the PKs and grubs were chewing away at the idle Axegrinders. By the time Raelin was dead, there weren't enough dwarves left to really threaten TKN, and it was simply a matter of working across to Braxas. It didn't help chief's cause that Braxas was rolling subpar on her PAB, too. TKN eventually engaged Braxas head-to-head on the same 7-hexer where she had spent most of the game, and his glyph-enhanced attack of 7 took her down with only one (nagrub-healed) wound to show for the trouble.

Because of the flat road on the approach and the PKs that could clog up the high ground, my army presented a pretty tricky tactical nut for Jeff to crack. After thinking about it for a while after the game, I came to the conclusion that he probably should have played Braxas more aggressively. I think he was just a bit too conservative - using her like she was Q9 in stead of a fast, disengaging dragon. It would be risky, but rushing in to try to gas Raelin and a bunch of PKs early on might have swung things. Also, having the AE drop in the first turn, win initiative, take the unique attack glyph, and rain 4 attacks of 5 on my start zone would have been a good strategy, too.

6-1, First place.

So, my undefeated record in tournaments ends, but I keep my top finishing streak alive.
great game chief, and thanks for making the drive to make it happen.
It was great match, and always a pleasure to play with Dok. A great guy and I just got to keep trying to beat him!
