Map nominees: Five categories, two different maps per category; at least one will have two copies.
Edit: Let's update this to 16 maps for 32 estimated players, so lava maps need to be built twice. Map balance:

Re: Utah: 2012 National HeroScape Day planning thread
NHSD format discussions here; start here.
First, army size. Last two years were under 500 points, two years before that were over 500 points, and the initial two years were 500 even. Keep in mind that we don't want to go too high, rounds will probably be 45 minutes again. Army size range: 500? 500-550? 500-600? Army format: anything goes, or some kind of requirement/restriction? Include Marvel this year? We haven't the past few years, but we started out saying they were okay. Round length: 45 or 50 minutes? 15 minute-breaks as usual? Tournament format: Swiss-style matchups, or something else? Whole Card Scoring? What else am I forgetting? |
Re: Utah NHSD 2012: planning thread
Yes you can Plan on me. I will help where I can. Hopefully my work load will lighten up by then. I vote 550 points for this year. I like the way we have worked the rounds in the past. But, I am open for whatever. I might have a new scaper showing up. Lets keep it a maybe for now.
So here's my vote. Marvel and customs vote Yes. Round length 50 minutes. Restrictions: Start zone limitation as usual. Army size 550 points. I would also not like to see the wound glyph. I also think having some maps with multiple start zones is fun. |
Re: Utah NHSD 2012: planning thread
Everyone posting and reading this. Let Scott know if you are able to help with maps (how many you can build, what sets you have) or just help with set up and tear down (Tables and chairs, bringing maps in/out and clean up. The more help we get the lighter the load for Scott. Just make sure if you sign up to help that we can count on you.
Thanks, Steve. |
Re: Utah NHSD 2012: planning thread
I can build maps/setup/tear down. For map building, I have all the sets (including, finally, a Thaelenk Tundra. I still haven't opened the box.)
So, I can build pretty much any maps, if need be. |
Re: Utah NHSD 2012: planning thread
Here are my votes:
Marvel and customs: Yes. Round length 50 minutes. Restrictions: Start zone limitation as usual. Army size 550 points. Multiple start zone maps are good. Whole card scoring: yes. Army construction: We could have some fun with this; maybe have rounds which require every unit be from the same general, and others where each army must contain units from 3-4 different generals. Everyone would require 2 armies: one general-specific army, and a mixed army. I liked the prize assignments last year (where prizes were random to participants, except for the top two places.) I am planning on making a dice tower for the prize table (like my castle one, for any that have seen it), which means I had better get busy on it. |
Re: Utah NHSD 2012: planning thread
I will help with maps and cleanup, etc. this year.
Marvel and customs: No Round length: 45 minutes was fine last year but if we're upping the points then maybe 50 minutes. Restrictions: The usual Army size: 550 is okay, prefer 500. Multi start zones are cool, but let's not go crazy with this. Whole cards scoring yes. I prefer to keep army building minimally complicated, so let's just bring one army, as usual. |
Re: Utah NHSD 2012: planning thread
My votes:
Marvel: No! Customs: Yes! Round length: 50 min. Army size: anything between 500-600 preferably closer to 600 edit: 550 points is my final vote. |
Re: Utah NHSD 2012: planning thread
Marvel and customs: Marvel No, Customs Yes
Round length: 40-45 minutes, I like shorter games...less thinking and more playing Restrictions: The usual Army size: ~500 Multi start zones: are fine Whole cards scoring: yes |
Re: Utah NHSD 2012: planning thread
Marvel and Customs: No, especially Customs.
Round length: 45 minutes Army Size 500 pts No Start Zone size Restrictions, especially if over 500 point armies. I only want to make and bring one army. |
Re: Utah NHSD 2012: planning thread
Lessee...
Marvel & Customs: Yes to both. The "cheap half" of Marvel are good figures. Plus, I want to see Undead Skeleton armies, mu-hahahah! Quote:
Army size: I'd like it random (d20) within a range--500+ points--but am undecided as to that range, 500-550, -575, -600? Theme/restrictions: Simplest is best. One army. I could go for 100 points more than you could field, gives the player a bit of flexibility each round. OR have everyone include a Large/Huge figure. Whole card scoring makes it a little easier to determine points won. Start zones? That would depend on the maps chosen, wouldn't it? Random prize selection (except for the top kid/adult) went very well, I thought. There won't be much this year, and it will be the final year for official prize support. Whatever that entails. We'll only have Saturday to setup/tear down, but I'll have Friday afternoon & evening free to build some last-minute maps. Hopefully I can at least get the building keys Friday night, that'll help to get into the building early Saturday. Thinking out loud here with 45-minute game/lunch rounds: Mock-up schedule (similar to previous NHSDs; 2009-11 began 30 minutes later, 11:30) 8, 8:30am(?) - Open building, set up everything (chairs, tables, marking map start zones, last-minute map construction) 10:30-11am Check everybody in 11:00-11:45am - Round 1 12:00-12:45pm - Round 2 01:00-1:45pm - Round 3 1:45-2:30pm - Lunch break/mingle (lunch end includes Round 4 setup) 2:30-3:15pm - Round 4 3:30-4:15pm - Round 5 4:30-5:30pm Rankings, random prizes and tear-down Optional further gaming somewhere else? Should lunch be after Round 2 or 3? Would two hours in the beginning be enough? 8:30-10:30? This depends on if I get all my stuff organized in advance (pens/name badges/map name placards/glyphs/all the other little things). |
