5x400 General Wars! West Chester PA tournament - June 16th

I haven't done a tournament in a while and I have decided that it is time to fix that. This tournament will be held at the best game store ever, The Games Keep in West Chester PA on June 16th, 2012. The address is:

The Games Keep, LLC
929 South High St, Parkway Center
West Chester, PA 19382
484-905-5533
Mon-Tue: closed, Wed: noon - 8pm, Thu-Sat: noon - 10pm, Sun: 2-8pm

Here are the specifics for the tournament:

What to bring:
Figures, their cards, dice, wound markers, and order markers

Army Construction/Format: 5x400 General Wars!
Players will have to build 5 separate armies each featuring a separate general or generals. You may not have more than three (3) of any single squad card in each of your armies. Each round we will all fight with our armies from the same general. I am still unsure of the order the generals will figth in, but here is how the generals will be paired up:
Utgar
Jandar
Einar
Vydar/Valkrill
Ullar/Aquilla

Each army will be 400 points with no Marvel or custom figures units allowed. Sam Brown will be allowed as long as you can tell him apart from any other 4th Mass you may be using. Any 4th Mass or 10th of Foot sculpt can be used for Sam Brown.

Timeframe:
The tournament will consist of five 50 minute rounds. We will begin set-up at 12PM and start rolling dice around 12:30. Including tournament clean-up and awarding prizes, we should finish up between 6-6:30 PM.

Fee:
$5 per participant will be collected with all of the money going toward gift certificates that can be used at The Games Keep. TGK still had some HS merchandise last time I was there as well as other great board, card and miniatures games.

Maps:
Frossenmere brought by tom
Moltenclaw's Gulch brought by Northgate
Cage Match brought by Spidysox
Shards brought by Spidysox
Mauna Killa brought by Johngee
Highland Road brought by tom
Meander brought by mad_wookiee
Fulcrum brought by Northgate
Ticalla Sunrise brought by tom
Burial Marsh brought by Hose and by Johngee

Glyphs:
None.

How will players and maps be selected?:
Players will be assigned randomly for the first round. After that round I will match up players with similar records (for example in round 2 the 1-0 players will be randomly paired and the 0-1 players will be randomly paired). This way by the end of the tournament, we should have a clear 5-0 winner or a 4-1 winner with the most points (see below).

Maps will also be assigned randomly. Once I get the players assinged I will look at the maps that they have both played on and put them on a map neither has played.

Full Card Scoring:
At the end of each round players will add up the value in points that they have destroyed throughout the course of the game. Typically the winner will have wiped out his opponent and will score the full 400 points. The loser will add up the points for each card they completely destroyed. There will be no partial scoring for wounds inflicted on heroes that are not destroyed or squads that have surviving members. This is different from what we normally do so please feel free to ask any questions regarding the change.

I should be there for this. Can't say 100% just yet, but it looks good.

I love the format. It was my favorite from Gencon last year outside of Heroes only.

I hope you guys can make it. At least you know it will be easy to find as it is just a little ways down the road from where Mechanicon was held.

Great! Glad you guys like the format. I still need to decide what round each general should fight. I think the generals that have the strongest builds should go first (Utgar, Jandar) with the weaker ones going later (Ullar). What does everyone else think?

Just roll a d7 (if you can find one) to determine which General goes 1st, 2nd, etc. that way it will be kept random.; or doit alphabetically to be fair. Whaaat-ev-verrr suits you, since you're the organdizer (I almost said, "the hostess with the mostess" - hahaha).

I've always liked General Wars formats and I love this format TOM. It's very C0^0L. #1. it's based on a round number 400, and not some weird odd one that was mysteriously pulled out of thin air. BUT why does the winner of each round get five extra points for winning? Check above, "...winner gets 405 points...," was that a typographical error? #2. AND I love the fact that we'll alll get to use FIVE different armies on the same day, since I don't get play very often, BUT I'll probably end up up building and bring four different armies for each General and that would mean twenty armies - aaaarrgh! NOTE: I must remember to styfle myself and be decisive for a change. #3. It's also very interesting that we will all be using the same General at the same time - awesome! BUT I suspect that we will be seeing a lot of similar armies or at least the same units in each army, i.e. Utgar's Stingers, Jandar's 4th Mass, etc. SO you might want to add a caveat above reminding players to make sure that their own figures are marked in some way, in order to tell them apart from their opponents' pieces. I tried little hair scrunchies around the bases of my guys one time at Pitman. It was visually effective, but a real inconvenience. I must thing of some other method. #4. Hmm, June 16th is excellent, I should be settled into Cape May County bt thenand unpacked from my year long hiatus in the Merryland of APGMD. Since it's the Saturday before Father's Day, I should be able to assuage Mrs. G.'s plans to CELEBRATE with the expressed desire, "All I want for gifts is a chance to play some 'Scape." #5. One last comment, the 60 minute rounds is okay with me, BUT do you think we really need to go the whole distance with only 400 point armies? Granted, we're typically extremely fortunate to get everyone there by 12:30, so we can start on time; however you are not allowing any specific amount of time between the rounds for us to fetch the next army (from a different General) out of our vehicles. And there's always the need to calculate current standings to match up the next set of players, etc. Just a suggestion.

&OBTW: Put me down as a Probable Attendee, baring any unforseen circumstances like "random weirdnesses" or "alien abductions." I will confer with SqueegeeLuigi9999 and his father ("DW1") to ascertain if they can make it... I'll also shoot a PM to DragonSlayer2 to see if they're up for joining us.

Please put Mason and myself down as possibles for this event. We have something already planned for that date, but I am doing everything I can to reschedule because I need some scape action and the format is awesome!

So Aquilla and Ullar are combined? Also I assume Valkrill is thrown in with Utgar? Just want to be sure.

Man this format will knock off so many units on my, never played at a tourny, list!

1. Mistake on my part. I will fix it.
3. I am not certain you will see that many identical armies. Our group doesn't tend toward the power builds. Still, having a way to tell your figures apart is always a good idea.
4. You HAVE to be there. It's just how this stuff works!
5. We probably won't need the whole 60 minutes. I had originally had it as 5x500 which is why I had 60 minute rounds. I will drop that down to 50 for now and people can feel free to chime in if they feel strongly about it.

Glad I could help out with your list. Right now I am not entirely sure what generals will be paired up and what rounds they will fight in. I will let everyone know shortly. I can guarantee that Aquilla/Ullar will be together (you can use figures from both generals in your army) and Jandar will be alone.

Re: 5x400 General Wars! West Chester PA tournament - June 16

IMO, though Valkrill should be thrown in w Utgar based on the HS story and such, I think that Utgar should be left to himself due to the number of units Utgar can field. Maybe field Valkrill with Einar or Vydar due to the smaller armies they can field.
