Last week, we spotlighted one of the designs from a Super Secret Release, the Armored Antagonists. This week we will continue to spotlight these designs. On the bar this week – Fire Brand!

With his Dual Flamethrowers SA he can roast up to three figures at once! With his Lava Resistance special power he can work well on Lava based maps. Combine this with his Superstrength and Flying, you have a strong unit who is a must on any Lava map.

VC
Last week a glyph was highlighted, but this week a common hero will be displayed, also from Wave 15: the Command Courier.

Command Couriers bring orders to Vydar's Unique Heroes thanks to a telepathic link to Vydar himself. On first glance, the Command Couriers' Order Marker management appears to be very costly for the benefit received. If you want three Command Couriers, it will cost you 105 points for a largely non-attacking force! However, the ability to change strategies at a moment's notice is often worth the cost. Additionally, the Command Couriers are decent as a clean-up force if your opponent lacks special attacks thanks to Fleet Footed and a ranged attack.

So, if you decide to use the Command Couriers in your army, you need to decide which Vydar heroes to include with them. Since you are making an all-hero (or nearly all-hero) army, squads are your worst enemy. Thankfully, Vydar has many multi-attackers. Heirloom and James Murphy are both good choices for this role. Agent Carr is an excellent assassin unit, with his attack of 6 in melee. Agent Skahen is one of the most important heroes in a Vydar hero build, offering free movement thanks to Cover Fire. The Command Courier isn't a great unit that overwhelms the metagame, but it allows for fun and unique strategies, and hopefully this article can persuade you to give them a try if you haven't already.
This week we're featuring another repaint by Bonegnasher! His Wo-Sa-Ga repaint is one fierce swamp monster!
Map of the Week
This week, we bring you a gigantic map by Skyknight!
This map uses a nice mix of different terrain that makes it aesthetically pleasing.
Orgsbane and Obfusatedhippo have joined forces to bring a new custom creation contest to the site. The former has created a repaint of Abomination in Marro colors, for the contestants to create a card for.
So what are you waiting for? Enter now, but first, check out the rules. Hurry, because the contest ends June 28th!

HoSS will be releasing late June! While this is the 'official' release date (sometime that last week of June), we could still use your help to possibly release even sooner! We have just two figures to finish testing before we would be ready for release, but with your help we would be able to release more maps (currently seven need testing) and possibly an additional figure!

Do you fancy a challenge?

Then why not try the Speed Custom Challenge! Based off of the original speed custom contests of old, each week the Speed Custom Challenge gives you a new figure or concept to turn into a Heroscape card!

Last week we had this big ol monster to work with:

Epic Heroscape Game #2- Taelord’s Coliseum By Craig Van Ness
This game is for 6 players and the host (who does not play).
The Battlefield-
Build a Coliseum. You can use multiple tower packs, or build up terrain to make stepped seating. It really doesn’t matter what it looks like. It kinda depends on just how big your Heroscape collection is (my collection is kinda big). When building your Coliseum, you will need a clear visual clue as to where the fighting area is and where the figures in the audience are placed. This visual clue could be raised tiles, different color tiles, or any other clue you might think of. I build up the stands with raised tiles.
You’ll need 18 Unique Heroes to run this game. You will also need some other figure to represent the crowd watching the event, and some squads to represent the wild animals that will be released during the game.
The Story-
(I am not a writer, so I usually write just enough to set the stage.)
Taelord, lord of battling and Utgar’s current right hand man, holds gladiator competitions to find who are the most fearsome warriors in his army. He also forces captured heroes to fight in the battle, just for added extra fun.
The Pregame-
In this game, before the game, each player needs to spend 100 gold. Tell them before they even see the arena (if possible) they will need to decide how much gold they will spend on each of these four things. They will need to bring a piece of paper to the game stating where their gold will be spent.
Give them the following in an email or on a piece of paper:
Gladiators, here are your options:

Bribe the Gladiator Trainer(this will better your chances to get the Gladiators you want)

Donate to the Temple of Dagmar
(this could increase your initiative roll during the game)

Throw Gold into the Crowd
(this might help you win the favor of the crowd)

Bribe the Animal Trainer(I think you can guess what this will do)

So...
You can spend your 100 gold however you like.
Here’s an example:
Bribe the Gladiator Trainer - 10 gold
Donate to the Temple of Dagmar - 50 gold
Throw Gold into the Crowd - 0 gold
Bribe the Animal Trainer - 40 gold
Please return this to me before the game begins.
Also, let the players know that they will be choosing from 6 sets of 3 Gladiators. You, as the host, pick these groups. Just use what you have. When selecting, make sure the sets of 3 heroes are not equal in points total.
Here are the teams of 3 heroes you will be selecting from for Taelord's Coliseum:

(this is who we played with)
Cyprien, Mimring, Krug – 420
Ne-Gok-Sa, Deathwalker 9000, Su-Bak-Na – 380
Finn, ROTV Raelin, SOTM Sgt. Drake Alexander – 330
Sonlen, Morsbane, Syvarris – 360
Spartacus, Retiarius, Crixus – 380
Sudema, Agent Carr, James Murphy – 315

Getting Ready to play- OK, you have built your Coliseum. You will need to place 6 glyphs Symbol-side up anywhere on the coliseum floor near the edge, not in the middle. Spread the glyphs out evenly. Cut up 6 small pieces of paper (about the size of a glyph) and write the numbers 1-6 on them. Place the pieces of paper on the glyphs. Place your groups of 3 heroes adjacent to the each of the glyphs, so each glyph will have a set of three heroes nearby. These glyphs represent doors and no figure is allowed to occupy them. You will need 3 squads to represent the animals that will attack during the game. I used Marrden Hounds, Anubian Wolves, and Deathstalkers. You can use any squads you think will work. Hide these squads from the players. They will come into play later. Now, fill the stands with the rest of your Heroscape figures.
Rules for the players:
Object- To survive and destroy the other gladiators. The instantly game ends when there are only 6 Heroes left and victory points are awarded. Each surviving Hero receives 100 pts + their point value. During the game players should keep the Army Cards that their gladiators destroyed. Each player receives the point value of each hero their team of gladiators destroyed. The player with the most points wins. However, you must have at least one surviving Gladiator to win.
So how does this stuff work during the game?
Bribe the Gladiator Trainer – The player who spent the most gold gets first pick of his 3 heroes, the 2nd most gets second pick and so on. All ties are decided by a 20-sided roll.
Donate to the Temple of Dagmar- The player who spent the most gold adds 10 to every one of his initiative rolls. If there is a tie decide it by rolling the 20-sided die. All other players add 1 to every one of his initiative rolls for each 10 gold they spent (round down).
Throw Gold into the Crowd- The player who spent the most gold is never attacked by the Crowd (see The Crowd below), and never is Sniped (see End of the Round Sniping). All ties are decided by a 20-sided roll. All other players add 1 to every one of his Crowd Rolls (this includes Crowd Approval Rating rolls and Crowd Attack Rolls) for each 10 gold they spent (round down) (see The Crowd below).
Bribe the Animal Trainer- The player who spent the most gold will receive control of the first squad of animals unleashed. See End of Round Animal Attack below. The 2nd most will receive control of the second squad released after the second round. The 3rd most will receive control of the third squad released after the third round. All ties are decided by a 20-sided roll.
End of the Round Sniping: This crowd is evil. At the end of each round, each player, except the player who through the most gold into the crowd, must roll for his or her Crowd Approval Rating. All players, except the player who through the most gold into the crowd, roll the 20-sided die. The player who rolled the lowest will receive sniper shots. Sniper shots are taken one at time for each of this player’s heroes. The host rolls the 20-sided die. If a 19 or higher is rolled that hero is destroyed.
End of the Round Animal Attack: After the Sniping (see above) the animals are released. You will need 3 squads to represent the animals that will attack during the game. One squad will enter the Coliseum after each of the first three rounds. I used Marrden Hounds, Anubian Wolves, and Deathstalkers. You can use any squads you think will work. Prior to the game, pick the order in which the squads will enter the Coliseum. After the first round announce that animals are being released (one squad). Give the appropriate squad card to the player who spent the most for Bribe the Animal Trainer. Roll a six sided die. The animals are placed adjacent to the door glyph rolled. The player controlling the animal squad may immediately take a turn with them. After round 2, the first squad of animals takes a turn, then the new animals are released. Roll a 6-sided for a new door glyph. The player who spent the second most gets to control this new squad and takes a turn with them immediately. After round 3, the first squad of animals takes a turn, then the second squad of animals takes a turn, then the third squad is released. Roll a 6-sided for a new door glyph. The player who spent the third most gets to control this new squad and takes a turn with them immediately.. After round 4 and on, continuing taking turns with the animals (in the chosen order) if they are alive. Any heroes destroyed by the animals count for victory points for the player controlling the animals. Note: Order markers are never placed on these animal squad cards. They move and attack at the end of the rounds only.

Taelord’s Ruling- If a Hero figure receives wound(s) and now has one life left, the crowd will vote to see if that hero is automatically destroyed. Roll ten combat dice, if you (the host) roll 5 or more skulls the figure is destroyed, if you roll 4 or less the figure remains on the table. Note: For scoring, any hero destroyed by Taleord’s Ruling counts for the player who brought that hero down to one life left.
The Crowd- You as the host control the crowd figures. You do not use order markers. They only move and attack if a player fails a Crowd Attack Roll. A Crowd Attack Roll takes place when a player’s Gladiator goes into the crowd or attempts to move while in the crowd area(the crowd area). That player immediately rolls the 20-sided die. If the player rolls a 15 or higher, the crowd does nothing. If the player rolls an 14 or lower you can attack with any Army Card nearby. Note: If you are the player who through the most gold into the crowd, the crowd ignores you.
In closing- If you are unclear about anything above, you as the host can decide what you think will be fair and fun for all players. Feel free to add, adjust, and or delete anything written above. Some added surprises will keep your players on edge, especially if you think they are reading this blog entry.

I eliminated the "host" non-player, as I wouldn't want to be him :p . I also modified/added a "few" things . So, without further ado . . .

What follows is the sad diary of my ill conceived attempt as starting a Spring Scape League here. Before you say well that sounds nice let me tell...

What follows is the sad diary of my ill conceived attempt as starting a Spring Scape League here. Before you say well that sounds nice let me tell you more about the ill-conceived part.

It was to be an outdoor league. I’m a bit of an outdoor person, meaning I don’t want to live off the land but like lawn chairs. It’s finally Spring here, and who doesn’t love Spring? Who doesn’t’ want to get outside for some real capital F Fun?

I have a side hobby of fighting with foam and latex LARP weapons and it seemed a good idea to me at the time to take outdoor Scape one step further and make it a LARP. That’s right, people like me would take the place of the figures and instead of dice we would just hack at each other with weapons. Who wouldn’t like that?

The local paper publishes announcements for such things free of charge so I placed a notice about the upcoming Outdoor Live Action Heroscape Spring League. I even added “swords will be proved.” Who could resist that?

My sons tried to prepare me I think. They told me not to expect more than a handful of people. I had been busy at the kitchen table you see, writing up character sheets for all the figures that were reasonable. (i I’m afraid that as the night wore on everything seemed reasonable. I envisioned Mimring as two people together, one with a sword and the other flapping some big cardboard wings). I stayed up way too late drawing picture, making plans and giggling at my own cleverness.

Saturday morning I was really tired but boy was I excited. Heroscape people! We could play games and chase each other in the park and speak the language that only other Scapers understand. I decided to go as Drake Alexander- I have a helmet. I dressed in green, put a lot of silver duct tape on my one arm and loaded my helmet into the trunk with a dozen homemade swords. Originally I had planned to bring thirty weapons but my kids had suggested I start smaller, after all this first meeting would be more of an introduction.

It rained. I sat in the car at Mic Mac Park where we were supposed to meet. The day was gray, the sky was gray and the rain came down like farmer spit. No one came. At one point I thought someone had arrived, for a car pulled up next to me and the man inside looked over at me. I waved. He motioned for me to roll down my window and then he flashed a badge. What was I doing waiting in the parking lot of a park? Why did I have duct tape all over my arm? I told him about the league and then he wanted to see all the foam weapons in the trunk. I showed him, and then he seemed to get bored and he left. He wouldn’t even take a league flyer with him.

My kids told me it was just because of the rain. I asked my friend Ken why he hadn’t shown up and he said that he was usually hung over on weekends and generally didn’t get out of bed on Saturdays. Everyone was still telling me that it sounded like a good idea so I kept going. (Everything is someone else’s fault, right?)

I picked another date and decided to make posters. I needed a catchy hook- something that would get people’s attention and tap into their hidden fantasies, like beer commercials. I made a nice poster that said “Want to be a dwarf?” Unfortunately I could only do black and white. A couple of stores put the poster up and I even snuck some into two of the libraries.

This time I was so excited I packed the car the night before. I bought two cases of water bottles. I packed twenty weapons, and some blankets for us to sit on too. I had six handout pages for everyone- characters sheets, design parameters, registration form, and a questionnaire that asked questions designed to help plot out the future of the organization. Wouldn’t it be great if we had a presence in the Canada Day parade, in full costume? That would get even more people involved!

It rained again. Buckets and barrels. Pouring, thunder, lighting, and I sat in the car at Mic Mac Park and not even the police came to check out the Spring Scape League. My kids gently suggested that perhaps it was not the right time for such a thing in this city. When would be a better time, I snapped at them. They just looked at each other and didn’t answer.

They say third time’s the charm. They also say bad things come in threes. I have read too that if you see three owls the same day that you will die within twenty-four hours. But I have never seen an owl in the wild.

This last time, just this past weekend, the weather was bon. If your French is rusty it means no snow or rain. I had advertised a later start time for this one- hey if something doesn’t work you have to change it up, right? So I was there, Mic Mac Park for 11am. There were already fifty or so cars in the parking lot. Fifty cars!! I began to feel a little panick;y. I had grouched out the night before and only brought ten swords, two water bottles and a police mystery novel to read. I wouldn’t have enough gear- but maybe some of the people were there for something else? Fifty cars!

I could see a knot of people at one of the picnic areas. Probably all gathered together, swapping Scape stories and talking about map building. How awesome is that? I decided to make my entrance in full Drake Alexander mode.

I hadn’t bothered making the grapple arm that morning, so I quickly improvised it with three sticks and some masking tape that was in the car. I put on my world war two replica helmet . I was already wearing green pants and shirt. I went to the trunk, got out my backpack of handouts and registration forms, and a long curved foam sword. Drake would have charged right in screaming, so that’s what I did too. Banzai!

Three words: Chinese Family Picnic. By the time I realized I was already screaming and holding the form sword over my head. I hoped they would think it was a joke. Mothers grabbed their children and held them close. A dozen adult males came after me. They didn’t think it was a joke.

I’m old. I don’t run so fast anymore. My left knee gave out and I rolled. My pursuers grabbed me. What was I doing? They called the police. When I tried to open my backpack to explain they took it away from me. I think they thought it might be a bomb. I tried to tell them about the Spring Scape League but they didn’t really listen.

A police cruiser pulled up and a woman officer stepped out. She looked angry. To make a long story short, I am banned from public parks until next year.

It seems no one wants to play Scape stuff anymore.

I was hoping to have everything ready to post print & play files for Kings & Chronicles by now, but the process is taking a little longer than I had hoped. I didn't realize just how bad my rules were! I had made so many revisions over the past two years that they were woefully out of date. Rather than simply cleaning them up I've been pretty much writing them from scratch.

I also realized that some of my terms were confusing. For example, the cards used by the players to drive the game forward were called Event Cards. But an Event Card may be played in one of three ways, activate the Event, spend the Point Value of the Card, or use the Battle Effect to impact combat. After writing the phrase "Event Card Event" several times I quickly realized that this doesn't work. I am changing the name to Action Cards, which not only better describes what they do, eliminates the redundancy and the confusion. This means I have to update the backs of all the two decks.

So between rewriting the rules and more general editing than I had expected this is taking a little bit longer. But I'm getting there.

I also hope to put together a video or two that demo's the game and explains how it is played to serve as an aid for those who would like to play test.

Some time this summer, I guess.

We have been rebuilding our custom game for about six months now, and I do believe that we will not be redoing it again. The pointing and playing...

We have been rebuilding our custom game for about six months now, and I do believe that we will not be redoing it again. The pointing and playing system isn’t perfect but we have such a good idea of what we’re after- a good playing experience- that we are tinkering with stats and special powers to make everything as playable as possible.

We have retooled our mage magic system. There was a time when our game evolved rather quickly and became unbalanced and the mages fell away because they were not practical anymore. We had such good memories of them- teleporting here and there and using blocks to try and stop other mage’s spells, and then more blocks to try and block their blocks.

Spell success is determined by a 20d roll and different classes of mages have bonuses to the roll to make them stronger. There is a standard spell book with all sorts of different spells- from simple attacks, to flying, mist that blocks LOS and water walking.

The spells are powered by charges and you must purchase them with points before the game the same way you would purchase a figure or squad. This keep the mages a reasonable price- you can buy as many charges as you like but you run the risk of wasting them if the mage is killed before they get to use them. They can cast a spell as their attack turn but they can attempt to block a spell at any time as long as it is within their range (usually 6). It can be very dynamic but the mages oft end up as targets and require body guards.

When we first introduced mages and the magic system to the game some time ago, every faction had their own mages using the same system. But when the system became dysfunctional some of the factions continued to evolve. My eldest son is very fond of the skaven and their mages evolved their own unique system with different spells and powerings.

Our figures have somehow ended up divided by factions. In the beginning we had drawers for each general, but then the Romans got their own drawer, and then Japan, and now we have about thirty. Some of them are human- most of Jandar, Nordique, Rome, Japan, Arc, York, Kukumerlanmt, etc. These groups I think are fine using the standard spell book. But what about the other groups?

We have a drawer called the Rawrens, composed of Confrontation Wolfen. Recently the Wolves of Badru and some other of other custom wolves have joined the drawer. It didn’t seem to make sense to me that they should use the standard human spell book. The Rawrens as a race despise humans. So a special spell system and book are in the works for them- something called blood magic, powered by wounds , either an enemies or their own.

The dwarves are a particular problem. Our dwarves have somehow inherited an aversion to magic but they have not yet developed their own system. Some early work was done on making a rune based system but it remains undeveloped.

Although Magmar (our collection of gators and lizards and other water creatures) use the standard system at this time I would like to see them perhaps use something based on water.

Currently those pesky elves use both the standard system and an environmental system and that seems okay, since elves are notorious thieves.

Recently my eldest son has been playing some figures from HoSS, so Jedi and storm troopers have been walking our maps as well. Which led to the still unresolved debate- can use of The Force be considered using magic? Magic is after all a manipulation of energy and that’s what the force is too. It’s important to us because if The Force is a magical force then it can be countered be an opposing mage using a different magic system. What exactly is The Force?

I was going to say that our game now is similar to Classical Scape, but after writing about magic systems I guess it’s not all that close. Certainly it shares some of the best features of Scape, but it is a hybrid of a dozen games now combined with a large amount of trial and error.

I guess right now we have two kinds of mages- the unfortunate battle mages who are priced 60 to 90 points without charges, and the 180 point monster mages. The battle mages are designed to go out there and fight like crazy and then die, their charges spent before they can be killed. The master mages often have several special powers and are intended to be the base of an army and last the entire game.

For example one of my favourite battle mages is in Jandar- he’s a gnome named Bartholomew Silver Hair and he’s a funky little guy that’s fun to use. He’s a little tiny figure with a short sword in one hand and lots of multicoloured magic energy coming out of the other hand. Even after his charges are gone his 2A and 6R still give him some value.

Then there is the great King Fattyhead- at one time he had another more regal name but he became a favourite of my younger sons in the non Scape games they play. He’s a huge bloated blue frog thing and he was always their villain and they called him King Fattyhead to mock him and after a couple years of that his original name was lost. Anyway, he’s about 180 points and even if he doesn’t have any charges he can transform common squad figures into bushes. It might not be the most practical of specials but it’s quite entertaining.

It’s great fun developing new factions and dreaming up new units and magic systems and special powers. We have collected a lot of games over the years, but we never seem to play anything but our custom Scape game. It’s magical....

What versatility! Watch out for his Armor Piercing Rocket Special Attack, too! With each skull he rolls not only does he increase his chance for damage, but he reduces his opponent’s defense! With the ability to use this up to three times per turn, this can really hurt his opponent, so beware if that’s you! Put that together with Superstrength and Flying and you have a pretty cheap Iron Man counter, no matter which Armor your opponent fields.

This treasure glyph is fairly self-explanatory: it grants the Lava Resistant special power to the hero holding it. On many maps without lava, this glyph is useless. However, it is a fantastic glyph to grab on lava maps. With this glyph equipped, your Deathwalkers do not need to worry about lava field damage at the end of a round. A Wyvern holding this glyph is truly terrifying, using Talon Grab to drop opponents' figures into molten lava.

The most curious use of this glyph is its interaction with Racheim. If a hero has this glyph equipped, and Racheim attacks it with Frost Breath Special Attack, the hero holding the Gem of Lava Resistance must subtract 2 dice from its defense. Because of Racheim, picking up the Gem of Lava Resistance isn't always a good idea!
Custom of the Week
This week we're featuring another custom card from Scytale! The SPS Agents add to Vydar's ranks of ranged combatants, bringing with them their advanced weapons and technology. Their Targeting computers make them deadly opponents at closer ranges, while their Adaptive Armor makes killing them quite a challenge.

Don't forget to check out the rest of Scytale's customs!
Map of the Week
This week we bring you a map from long-time member ProtoFury, Monwhitt Ruins!

A very beautifully designed map, this map is rich with twists and obstacles. This map is great for casual and testing alike!

Custom SuperScape Creation
This week, we bring you a creation from The B.I.V., the U.S. Agent!

This figure is not only a great repaint of the Captain America figure, but also is dripping with theme. While his Shield Throw SA and his Counter Strike are the same as the original Captain America's, his Battle Rage power gives him more of a punch. Combine that with the same base stats but for a cheaper price and you have a winning figure to add to your superhero battles!

I had a day off from work and so I and my middle son decided to go for a canoe adventure. There is a national park near us but the entrance fee has gotten crazy so we go to a conservation area which is free.

Cedar Creek is well known for being a wild area in the middle of a farm area. Wildlife, bird life and lots of forest lining the creek provide a suggestion of what the area would have been like centuries ago.

We have been canoeing there before and it is nice- peaceful and relaxing. . This time was to turn out a little differently.

We got there all right, and unloaded the canoe. The place was deserted- it’s usually pretty empty. We carted the canoe through the trees down to the launching area to find the dock.... missing. The path was closed. The dock was gone. The water level was down about three feet and so they had closed it.

But we are hardy outdoorsman, right? A missing dock was not going to deter us. We climbed through the boards and slid the canoe underneath and onto the muddy creek bank, and launched. Already we could see a turtle basking in the sun on a nearby rock.

I’m not sure if it should be called a creek, for at this point it is very wide. The water level was low so it wasn’t especially deep, but it is about 150 feet wide and to me that’s not a creek. We have always gone upstream, but today we had decided to explore downstream for the first time. Usually there is a very low bridge that has deterred us from going down, but the water level was so low we would be able to pass beneath it without impediment. That is if we could actually get off the bank.

The water was very shallow. My son is very skinny. I am rather heavy. Imagine this: Me sitting in the back of the canoe, and the back of the canoe is sitting on the bottom of the creek. My son is sort of up in the air, like on a teeter totter, buoyed up by the water. I used the paddle as a pole and pushed off the bottom and soon we were midstream. The creek is shallow there too right now and I kept pushing. The bridge was near and the water got a little deeper and we could paddle.

There are barn swallows under the bridge- you know, those cute little birds that build nests of mud. As we got closer we could see there were A LOT of nests under the bridge, perhaps more than one hundred, and they were all nesting. Suddenly we are completely under the bridge and the birds are panicking and taking flight, about two hundred swallows, swirling around us. It was just a little freaky, especially if you’ve been scarred by the movie The Birds. For a moment we struggled with the canoe, too distracted by the whir of wings around our heads.

Did I mention the wind? It was against us. But it wasn’t just against us, -it had it in for us. It wasn’t a breeze, it was wind and there were actually waves going upstream on the creek. We first experienced it under the bridge but we managed to get past it because the birds were a little scary. We had to keep our nose into the wind for the moment we were slightly askew we were blown sideways and then backwards. After five times of being turned around we got the hang of it but we didn’t make much progress until then. Maybe the creek was trying to tell us something.

It’s carp breeding season. In case you’re not familiar with carp, they can get very big. In breeding season they go into the shallows and thrash- they’re either fighting, laying eggs, breeding, or all three. It was exciting to see, except when they erupted from the water six inches from the canoe, and except when they swam into the side of the boat and except when you put your paddle into the water and it gets popped out of your hands by a really big carp. And then you get turned sideways by the wind and run aground.

We worked our way back to the other side of the river then, for it seemed to be a little deeper. Admittedly we were getting a little tired. We’d stop every once in a while to enjoy the sound of no cars and no humans, just birds and the breeze but then the wind would start to turn us around and we’d have to paddle again. I suggested we paddle up to a bend ahead, just so we could see further and then start heading back.

Well at the bend we couldn’t see anything except more trees and creek so we turned around- which was easy because of the wind- and that’s when we saw the creature. My son had seen it earlier I think but I told him it was just a big stick. It looked like a big stick. But now it moved past us at high speed. The part sticking out of the water looked sort of like a gnarled stick- it was about five feet long and it was moving really fast. Sticks don’t move fast. It was something alive, and it was right beside us. My son saw an eye but he didn’t say so at the time, for he had begun paddling for all he was worth.

We paddled back through the thrashing carp, through the shallows and the swallows under the bridge and back up on the mud river bank. Only then did we relax. We had no clue what it was. My son thought it was an alligator, which definitely don’t live around here. We dragged the canoe back up the hill to the parking lot. A police cruiser was waiting there, but it left as soon as it saw us.

As we loaded the canoe onto the car the little parking lot suddenly filled up. Five vehicles, each with an older man driving, pulled in. And everyone one of them backed into the spots so they could drive away quickly. They did not get out, or greet each other, or get out fishing poles. They sat there, eerily silent. I tried not to look at them. Just tie the knots in the rope, and get away.

When we got home we tried to figure out what the creature was. After looking at pictures online I think it may have been a large sturgeon. My son is still convinced it was some kind of gator. As we sat looking I felt something on my arm- a tick. I found three more in my clothes. You know, the great outdoors seem a lot creepier than they used to be when I was a kid.

• Players bring one, or two, pre-drafted 440 point Heroscape armies which can include Classic Heroscape, Dungeons and Dragons Heroscape, SoV and C3V custom Heroscape figures (no Marvel, C3G, Star Wars, or other custom figures allowed).
This week, C3G brings you a Super Secret Release, the Armored Antagonists! So for the next couple weeks, we will bring each one up into the limelight for all to admire.

First up is the Iron Patriot! With his Chaotic Leadership ability, Osborne has a chance to move his troops forward early into the battle, but only if the initiative is on his side. With his Master Motivator ability he can take a turn with another unique hero after he inflicts a few wounds, which is added by the classic ability of Double Attack. Put it all together and you get a Unstable Leader that is ready to lead his Dark Avengers!
The SoV is proud to announce the summoning of qt.bangerang's Kantono Daishi to Valhalla! Kantono Daishi is a Jonin, a ninja leader, but also a Ronin, a samurai who has lost his honor and disgraced his daimyo.
No one would be friends with Kumiko, the elves kept making fun of Moriko's swords, and Einar never sent Shiori on missions. Kantono Daishi has met with these ninjas, and has offered them his leadership. Now, the ninjas are a force to be reckoned with, and residents of Valhalla can no longer sleep peacefully at night ...
Custom of the Week
This week we have another oldie but goldie: The Onyx Warlord by Rocktroll! With arm blades, press on nails for back plates and a snazzy new head crest, this is one Warlord you might not want to call mittens to his face!

And don't forget the rest of Rocktroll's customs!

Map of the Week
This week, we bring you a map from long-time member Nyys, Ice Labrynth!

With plenty of LoS blockers and windy pathways, this map is just like it's name would denote. On top of that, it is symmetrical for fair and fun gameplay!

Custom SuperScape Creation
This week we bring you a special duo by Hi1hi1hi1hi1, Hal Chandler and 3-D Man!

Hal Chandler can give Skrulls a wallop with his Skrull Sense 1, giving him 3 attack against those pesky aliens! He can then Summon 3-D Man and put
him on the board!

3-D Man can use his advanced Skrull Sense 3 to cause the Skrulls even more trouble, while he uses Shard of Light to be a pain to any opponent. At the end of the round his Limited Consciousness has Hal replace 3-D Man on the board, letting the deadly cycle start all over again!

Fan Fic of the Month
This week we bring you an ancient tale, back from the old days. And by old we mean 2006. Having achieved a rating of a very solid five out of five, it has been decided to bring your attention to the epic tale: The Trials of Syvarris. In fact, there are three tales, starting with this one, followed by The Fall of Valhalla and concluded with The Flag-Beaer Wars. The last two received a 4.5 and another 5, in that order. You can easily find these tales in the index, which is at the top of the fan art/fiction forum. Unfortunately, the author of these incredible works, Darconus, has not been seen for some time.

Leader Interview
With the 20th week of the revival of This Week@Heroscapers upon us, we wanted to honor the past leaders of W@HS by interviewing them and dedicating a special article to them. First, our current leader, Fi Skirata, interviewed S1R_ART0R1US!
Fi Skirata: Who are you really?

S1R_ART0R1US: I'm a college senior studying chemical engineering out in California, about to take on the "real world".

Fi Skirata: When did you join Week@HSers?

S1R_ART0R1US: September 2008. Doesn't seem that long ago though!

Fi Skirata: What is/was your favorite part of working on Week@HSers?

S1R_ART0R1US: Scouring through the threads-it gave me a bigger purpose for browsing the boards as I was looking for things that other 'Scapers would find cool.

Fi Skirata: What do you think you helped Week@HSers to accomplish during your leadership?

S1R_ART0R1US: I think that W@HSers really started delivering content consistently under my leadership (although I certainly did not initiate members taking up the responsibility). Just looking through the dates of W@HSers posts you can get a good sense of this. And you never know what cool stuff you'll find from so long ago!

Fi Skirata: If there was a section from Week@HSers past you could bring back, what would it be?

S1R_ART0R1US: The NecroPost of the week. This was by far my favorite section as it brought up a lot of old valuable insight about the game. I feel it helped me to "stand on the shoulder of giants" and understand the community and game more.

A close favorite was the Thread of the Week. It was great seeing new posts in those threads once the story was posted, as it showed that people actually liked what we put out!

Fi Skirata: In closing, do you have any message to give to the Week@HSers crew and/or the community as a whole?

S1R_ART0R1US: Community isn't just important for HS, it's important for life. Without others to help guide you (not always in unit selection, but things like career and mate selection), you're missing out on a lot of insight you can't always see yourself. I urge the community to continue working and playing together in support of HeroScape and the unique community it has spawned.

Fi Skirata: Thank you for making the time in what sounds like a very busy schedule to answer our interview and we at 'Week wish you luck in your College endeavors!
NecroPost of the Week
In thanks to S1R_ART0R1US, we bring the NecroPost of the Week back for one time only! When opening at the Heroscape: Rise of the Valkyrie Master Set for the first time, Mimring was pretty cool, but it was Agent Carr who swept people off their feet. That black trenchcoat, a sword of reckoning, those dark shades ... despite 13 official waves Agent Carr remains the most awesome character in the game. The thread Just How Awesome is Agent Carr? lists a collection of Chuck Norris-like facts about everyone's favorite Agent.
You are warriors of Jandar, Ullar, Aquilla, Einar, or maybe Vydar. You have been trapped by the evil Ne-Gok-Sa, he could finish you if he wants, but he would rather toy with your life, so he offers you ... a deal. He has Mind Shackled several of you. As a warrior your job is to find the puppets and eliminate them; however, the puppets are also out to get you. They will pretend to befriend you, try to get you to trust them, and through deceit and treachery will attempt to vanquish the warriors! You must find the puppets ... before it's too late. If you find the puppets, Ne-Gok-Sa will set you free ... you have his word ... whatever that's worth ...
We will continue back through our history bringing you new Leader Interviews and a special article every week, so stay tuned!

There are rumours swirling around the strange place that I work. Apparently someone had a blow up, and now there are all sorts of problems and repercussions. I was very shocked to hear this because the person who had the blow up is supposed to be me.

I am thinking that these people have never actually seen a blow up. My brother, for example, used to have a blow up about every two years. He would trash offices, throw computers and rant and rave. He’d lose his job and then it would take him a year to find another one and then after another year he’d have had enough and would do it all over again. But don’t worry about him, he’s a teacher now. That’s safe, right?

They treat us badly as a whole, here at this job. They do little things, like give us company shirts and Hershey’s kisses but that means nothing. You can pat a dog on the head everyday but the dog remembers the times you kicked him and didn’t feed him first.

I generally take a lot of abuse- it’s the story of my life- and it takes a lot for me to speak up. Some people warned me, but I was too naive, as usual, to listen. They said don’t be too competent. Don’t work too quickly. But I did. I like working most of the time and take pride in my work. In the beginning they just kind of ignored me because they have no clue what they’re doing. But then slowly, they discovered that I could do whatever they asked. Next, an avalanche.

More duties, extra things, special projects and then I became backup for three different people. Sometimes those three people were all gone away at the same time. They took jobs away from people who were slow and gave them to me. I could deal with most of it.

I was aware that I had made a mistake, and that I was going to have to say something, because it truly was an avalanche. But I kept putting it off.

It got really bad. In one day I was assigned ten new projects. I finished the first one after four days and was then told it was no longer required. I finished the next one and was told that a manager had made a mistake and I would have to do the whole thing again. I did. Six times. Manager mistakes. I started the next one, and began the process of redoing it over and over and over because someone above me didn’t know what they were doing. And all this on a tight time limit too.

The straw that broke the camel’s back was when another worker succeeded in getting a medical leave for one month because of stress. I was asked to attend a meeting and they asked me just to do this other person’s job for the month, in addition to everything I was already doing. I think my eyes got really big.

They asked how my schedule was- and that’s when it came out. I thought I was very careful. I spoke calmly, though I admit my voice had a tremor in it. No, I did not have time and I listed the reasons why. I could make no head way because I was redoing the same projects over and over again.

My boss tried to joke, but I wasn’t in a joking mood. My boss could think of nothing to say, so he reminded me that the reason I was here was to make money for my family. That’s the best he could do.

The next day I started hearing rumours about the blow up. And the managers all started avoiding me. That was disconcerting at first, but they stopped bringing me all of their stupid projects and that wasn’t bad at all. And now I’ve been invited to a meeting with all the managers and the managers’ managers. That meeting is tomorrow.

The rest of the staff is all happy about it. They see it as an opportunity to make some procedural changes. In their words, it’s just too bad someone had to have a blow up to make it happen.

So I guess I’m blown up. Right now, I don’t really care. I’m sure it will haunt me in the future. Management really wants us to not say anything ever. But that isn’t always possible. I should have listened, checked my competency and I’d be fine. Same old story....

Update: after the big meeting of managers in the big board room
Guess what? I was left doing a gazillion jobs and they decided they couldn’t pull me away to attend the big meeting. I heard it was two hours long and deadly serious. The next day I was asked to attend a fifteen minute briefing where I guess they were going to ... brief me.... on the two hour manager’s meeting. Interesting, don’t you think, how their two hour meeting can be summed up in fifteen minute4s?

Second Update: I am briefed
I was told that all the managers are really busy and I should help them every way I can. And don’t think about trying to transfer out because we’re a team and they like me so much they aren’t going to let me go.

So.... nothing was really accomplished. Well, maybe I can pretend to be pre-blow-up whenever I feel like it and they’ll give me some breathing space. I know now that everything in Dilbert is true. Sigh.
