Marvel Battlefield Concept Map

This will probably be the map that debuts my MarvelScape creations. I only first purchased a Marvel HeroScape Master Set a short time ago and have not played many of the included scenarios yet. Now, I’ll be completely honest here, I’m not a big comic book fan. I don’t know many of the characters’ back-stories so creating meaningful scenarios might prove difficult (“fun”, I can do; “meaningful”, not so sure). I thought the map shown above would be fun.

I think the asphalt could become sticky tar slowing down movement. (Trapping figures is fun too, but much more difficult to write.) I've also tried to balance the lava-to-tar ratio as best I could but if anybody sees something I've missed please let me know.

I placed the Object of Power within the Warehouse ruin. My guess is that it’s kinda like a Tesla Earthquake Device, hence the...

Greasy Little Pig

Unconventional as it may sound, a greasy little pig is the star of my upcoming scenario. Players will fight to gain control of the pig and bring it back to their starting-zone. Although similar to a scenario I created for my Desert Oasis Battlefield, the pig is its own character and moves when a capture attempt fails. Check out this custom card to understand how this exactly works.

Fault-Line and The Great Gate of the Ancients

Okay, gang. Here are a couple of new maps/scenarios I’m working on. First up is my Fault-Line battlefield…

Fault-Line Battlefield

This idea has been in my head since I first purchased the Volcarren Wasteland expansion. The first incarnation of this map looked almost exactly like the one shown above but after play-testing it, my wife and I were convinced that it needed a great deal of work to make it enjoyable. The problem was that players would line up to the edge of the crevasse and shoot at enemies as they tried to survive crossing the fault. It seemed whoever moved first would ultimately die first. Not a good map – unless you’re a turtle/camper.

I’m working on two scenarios for this map. 1) An all out brawl in the canyon with limited range due to the thick clouds of toxic fumes and 2) An “occupy your opponent’s start-zone” type scenario.

In this second...

The Conqueror Worm

Yet another insidious idea from my ingenious mind. I’ve created a monster! [Maniacal Laughter]

Here’s the concept: Four armies wage war, not with each other, but on a monstrous worm burrowing just below the surface of the ground. The conqueror gains the glory and honor of ridding the land of Valhalla from this hideous worm.

Conceptual Battlefield Image

As you can see from the concept battlefield, a twelve-segmented worm lurks in the low plain in the middle of the arena. The segments are made from single-hex grass tiles and represent the worm just below the ground. Up to four players can attempt to destroy the beast.

At the beginning of each round, the winner of initiative can move the worm by taking a hex from one end of the worm and placing it on the other end. The player can do this 3 or 4 times depending on how fast you want the worm...

Snow and Ice Ideas

Retlaw has recently written a great thread about a slippery-ice rule variant in which the figure slides until it is stopped by something. This got the little gears in my head turning. Here are the rules I’ve come up with:

Slick-Ice Rules:
If a figure moves onto a Slick-Ice tile, the figure must continue to move in its current heading until: A) Its path is blocked by some object, enemy figure, or engaged friendly figure; B) It encounters an increase in elevation, a water tile, or the edge of the board; or C) The figure’s maximum move number is reached. When the figure has been stopped, its movement is over. The figure will take any disengagement attacks as it slides past enemy figures.

I’m currently putting together plans for a frozen lake battlefield in which the figures slide around like ice-skaters. Most of the map will be the icy lake with a few strategically placed blocks of ice and snow floating in it. I’ve also considered putting a few water...
