HS Codex Relaunch: Issue 2

Posted March 5th, 2014 at 03:46 AM by truth
The Heroscape Codex revival is back and better than ever in their second issue!

New features and improvements abound, ranging from a spiffed-up layout to a new "Community Watch" page. New articles include a preview of Heroscapers.com's upcoming upgrades, a detailed strategy report for C3V's popular Cathar Spearmen, and a get-to-know you interview with the instigators of BCoV, an up-and-coming customs group. There's also some great sketches done by the talented Art department of the Codex Staff.

With the release of the newest Codex, the Codex staff is launching an online presence. A new Twitter account (@HeroscapeCodex) and a new Facebook page (/hscodex) have been set up. These social media outlets will be used to keep fans of the Codex updated on recent announcements, as well as spreading the word around the web about the Codex, Heroscapers.com, and the game itself. The Codex Staff has also gotten a new email address (codex@heroscapers.com) for content submissions, letters to the editor, and general questions about the Codex.

Support the Codex:

You can read more about the release in the Codex Announcements thread.

If you have any questions about the Codex, if you have content you want to see featured in the Codex, or if you're interested in joining the team, send a PM to El T or Ninja Status. You can also send an email to codex@heroscapers.com

Let's get a round of applause for all our article writers and artists! It's of course not easy to work like this as a volunteer, but the team really came together on this one. Great job all around, and here's to the future of the Codex!

Very good work. The form is really good and I'm loving the different chronicles. Congratulations.

The strategy review of the Cathars is good (only one big mistake) but it misses some very elaborate points when playing with or against the Cathars.

The big mistake: 10th reg is disadvantaged against the cathars as long as the map is not very very pro-range. They lose hard in melee battle (4 defense vs 3 + braced spears) and if they try to kite like other ranged squads would do they have 2 attack and 2 defense which is really bad.
The best way to win is to wait then fire but if the stratzone is under it's not very good and you can't do this if there is Kravs in the Cathar build.

Back to the subject, the very elaborates points:
When rush and when slow-roll. This is a problem you have with all the melee squads but more difficult to resolve with the Cathars.
Basically I never slow-roll with melee unless I'm facing pure full-melee because otherwise any well played ranged figure kills you.
But with Cathars as explained in the article slow-roll is stronger than with normal melee squads and should be considered even if your opponent have one or two ranged figures.
So when slow roll and when rush? This is the really tricky part and there is no answer of this problem in the article.

Also second question: When you play against the Cathars with a melee squad do you engage the cathars one by one to reduce braced spears. Or do you engage the most Cathars possible at once to reduce their attack and don't lose attack (because if you engage only 1 cathar with a 4 member squad and the first guy kills the Cathars then you lose 3 attacks which is really really huge in a squad vs squad battle).
I studied this and the answer is with most of the squad you'll try to engage as many Cathars as possible and pray that your opponent D20 will not be hot.

There are 2 exceptions tho:
-Low attack really high defense 3 members squads: Phantoms Knights Sentinels of Jandar Warforged Soldiers etc... Because braced spears is very very strong on them and you want to avoid this as much as possible.
- Very low defense squads such as Vipers Ashigarus Yari Nabgrubs etc... The thing is with this squads if you engage all the Cathars at once yes it's good because you don't waste some attacks for sure but then even if you kill some Cathars all your figures will most likely be killed next turn and you're good for another turn of braced spears. So here too you've to reduce the braced spears at the maximum otherwise you'll just empale yourself on the front line of Cathars turn after turn.

Also when playing with the cathars you have to think of this so play very clumped up against PK sentinells Warforged Vipers etc... so no lone Cathar can be surrounded.
At the opposite against normal melee squads such as knights dwarves etc... try to lead with one lonely cathar to keep away the other cathars from being engaged all at once.
Do this only when it's possible which means when doing this does not you make lose any attack.

Last thing: never engage your Deathrevaers with Cathars. Deathreavers are a screen unit so you'll most likely have some ranged units to work with and they will most likely be stronger than the ranged "fillers" of any Cathar build so Cathars have to come to you. The Braced Spears 16 is really strong and allows the Cathars to kill rats without trigering scatter you don't want that.

Wow that was a big comment.

Well done again for the job done.

Thanks for everybody's encouraging words! With your support, we're only just getting started!

@noodles
Glad to hear that one of the original Codex members likes our redux! After all, that's my/our main goal with the Codex, to make a fitting tribute to the original.

I don't come to this site very often anymore but I'm glad Heroscape is still being represented so well on this site. This site has always been about great people and I love seeing how this community has kept it alive since the official stuff died out. This codex is just an example of that.
