It has been awhile since I've been to a tourney for 'scape, but the one thing I miss, and will hopefully experience again this Saturday is watching the last 5 or 10 minutes of a game (or having people watch mine).

It's a happy accident and emergent property of the 'standard' Swiss Heroscape tournament format that in games where players are thinking more and using more of the hexes of their starting zone, their games tend to go on longer. As the game progresses, the Order Marker choices, die rolls, and initiative switches become even more important as players try to eke out a win with the scraps of their army.

In short, the most dramatic and interesting moments in Heroscape tourneys have the most eyes on them.

Sorry- I was asked ages ago to post info on this and it has taken me ‘til now to get it organized. I blame everything on cameras.

I have such problems with cameras. I usually break them. I don’t abuse them. Maybe I have a strong psychic electric field? Whenever I pick up a camera the batteries are always dead. Sometimes there is no memory card – who takes the memory card? I’m certain it is a conspiracy. It is either the work of the Canadian government, or WOTC. Why, you say, why, why? Admittedly, I’m not very important. But my house is so full of children and so messy that I think spies are using it as a training area. Sometimes at night I see ninjas. I guess it could be China too. (Ah, so this is where all those figures have ended up...)

Yes, we play a great big game we have very cleverly titled “the big game”. Several factions battle on a giant map, powered by outposts that generate points, tracked by coloured push pins.

We had a wonderful Christmas.

But for me, and I think for the rest of my children- the older ones- let's assume the five year old is still innocently oblivious- for the rest of us, I think we realize that the greatest gift isn't Christmas and it doesn't come wrapped in paper under a tree. It's being together. Together and happy.

I suppose the times that we aren't happy are very important too, because we are there for each other. But this Christmas I was really thankful for our time together. As my children grow their lives will take them further and further, out into the world. So our time together is precious.

I've seen the Grinch who stole Christmas a dozen times and like most of you, perhaps, I've always sided with the Grinch. The whos are annoying. They’re noisy and are obviously ignorant of birth control. But for the very first time I feel like I really understand why they were singing and so happy on Christmas morning...
