A Personal Endeavor

This year I will be in a Senior in High School. As a senior, I don't have to have a full schedule of classes. For this semester, I don't have a first period. I still have to take my brother and sister to school, however, and it would be stupid of me to try to take them to school, then to drive all the way back to my house, then drive all the way back to school. Not to mention expensive. So I will have an hour and a half of free time.
I'm sure the majority of this hour and a half will be filled with studying and homework, but I wanted to throw a little something else in there, something I have thought about doing for a long time.
I love TV shows. TV is one of the greatest things ever. They're a great form of entertainment, and I love to watch them. So I'm going to write my own Pilot for my own TV show. I've already started it, actually. It's a sitcom, based on a group of guys going through college together.
I don't expect it will come to much other than to give me an outlet for my creative juices, but that's fine with me. I'm looking forward to seeing if I have what it takes to write a decent Pilot.

Sounds like fun! I wrote a trilogy of epic Star Wars fan films back in high school. We filmed like half the first one and then realized we had no skill at all.

Remember to make it unique, so it stands out from other shows aired today. I find that producers are running on "empty" when it comes to new TV show ideas. It seems that they, on average, go for quantity and not quality. So don't be afraid to deviate from the mainstream sitcom!
Good luck! |

It is hard to come up with a new idea! I keep find myself drifting towards other sitcom ideas and sterotypes. I'm working on keeping it original and (hopefully) funny! Once I finish the pilot I may post it here so all of y'all can see it and help me with the editing and re-writing.

Characters first.
Situations later. Come up with the characters you want to write about...it makes writing so much more fun for the writer (at this point the audience doesn't matter). Once you have two or three solid character foundations (which includes their background stories - for sharing throughout the seasons) then put them into any situation you can come up with and think about how each would handle it. Then decide where you're going to put the characters and start writing the first scene. |

Good luck!
But please, whatever you do, don't give it a laugh tract! |
