D&D Heroscape Battle Report?!

Posted November 23rd, 2009 at 09:50 PM by Jexik
Some of you may wonder why I’ve been less vocal than I used to be in the numerous speculation threads surrounding D&D Heroscape. When I do butt in, I usually say something cryptic, like, “if Wave 9 and 10 are any indicator, I expect more good stuff out of MS3, Wave 11, and Wave 12.” Now I’m breaking my silence. I don’t expect more good stuff. I know that there’ll be more good stuff, because I’ve played it. It’s a blast and a half.

Earlier this year, I was brought on to help playtest new Heroscape stuff. A lot of people are worried that the new figures won’t fit well with existing Heroscape units, or that it’s not staying true to its roots. The designers and I thought it might be cool if I gave you a taste of the kind of thing you might be expecting out of the figures you’ll find in the new master set.

Skirmish at Steam Alley

My friend “Kang” and I played an upcoming scenario which uses standard terrain- lava, jungle, swamp, and the SotM glyphs. It’s sort of like a capture the flag scenario, with the good guys trying to protect a glyph for a set number of rounds, while some Obsidian-led Utgar forces try to take it.

Here are the armies:

"Kang"
Darrak Ambershard
Erevan Sunshadow
Ana Karithos
Tandros Kreel
2x Axegrinders of Burning Forge

Jexik
Pelloth
3x Deepwyrm Drow
1x Feral Troll
1x Obsidian Guards

Kang’s forces win initiative. He opens by sending his Darrak and his Axegrinders forward to defend the glyph. Three of my Drow skulk forward. Tandros steps forward to help protect his allies, yet one dwarf was not close to him as a sneaky drow kills one Axegrinder and attempts to hide. However, Erevan Sunshadow blasts him with fire, roasting him alive... well dead.

Kang takes this brief respite as a chance to move yet more dwarves up to protect the glyph. My Drow near the edges of the map take the other glyphs, revealing common and unique attack. Tandros Kreel shows his versatility by adjusting his position and firing an arrow at an approaching Deepwyrm Drow, but unfortunately he was unable to hit him. Two more dwarves then fell to drow steel. In a flurry, Erevan Sunshadow fires off two quick bursts of flame, but only manages to seriously injure his first target. With an evil laugh, Pelloth finishes the job, killing his own warrior with a twisted incantation that causes him to explode in a cloud of spiders; in the ensuing chaos, the Axegrinder protecting the stone and Tandros each suffer injury, although Tandros rolls with the punches just fine.

Pressing his advantage, Kang attacks with his dwarves. Thanks to his newly found Axegrinder allies, Darrak manages to backstab a drow, killing him with ease, followed by more attacks from the fighters from Feylund. The Feral Troll then burst towards the glyph, but Tandros taunts the troll directing the monster’s attention to him and he easily defends the Troll’s attack. Then Ana moves forward, maintaining a spell which can aid her teammates against the forces of evil. This helps Tandros defend yet another assault from the Troll. Erevan turns his attention to the troll, burning him slightly. Pelloth uses his wand to kill yet another dwarf, this time without incurring any losses to his own forces.

Darrak Ambershard and the dwarves take advantage of the distraction that the other heroes have made with the troll and beat him soundly, within an inch of his life. Pelloth explodes yet another drow and two more dwarves. Darrak and the remaining dwarves finish off the troll before he gets a chance to regenerate.

For a few successive turns, the remaining Deepwyrm drow and Erevan kept missing each other, but eventually even more dropped. The Obsidian Guards, who had been tacitly observing the combat, unsure of their new allegiance to the drow, stepped forward, but it was too late. Pelloth had seen enough. He gathered up the remnants of his forces - just three of his original nine Drow warriors, and retreated.

The Heroes and their new allies had won. This time...

Dark Elves? Who are you, and what have you done with the real Jexik???

Truth be told, I'm a teeny bit annoyed that they've put a single common squad in a set full of uniques. I guess I can buy extras of the squad seperately if I really want to play them, though.

The one thing I really want to know is what the gameplay effects of "pools of shadow" are.

One of the downsides of playtesting is that I'm supposed to use all of the units, even the ones that aren't very manly.

Very nice! Thanks for the headsup on the D&DHS thread.

So, Mr. Power Rankings, initial thoughts?

SWEET! Sounds like some bonding there with the dwarf hero and "backstab" (bonus for engaged allies?); "taunt" and some kind of movement (adjusting his position, maybe?) for Tandros; the mage has fire-related magic like the elves (multiple shots?); and Ana has anti-Utgar magic.

Pelloth sounds like he has some cool spells of his own (exploding his own forces to hit adjacent opponents/figures?); Drow have some kind of "hide and sneak" (see what I did there?) and maybe a hit-and-run type thing? The troll regenerates, and I guess we'll just have to wait for the rest.

~NB, glad they will work well in the HS universe

Thanks for the report, Jexik. I'm excited to play these guys, too. Sorry to hear the Drow are common, that's a bit frustrating, but I suppose not too surprising, really.

Definitely sounds like some great new units and game play options. Thanks for the sneek peak!

Well, we knew that the Dwarf hero was going to bond with the Axegrinders, since the Axegrinders can bond with any Dwarf hero. Which was a nice bit of foresight by the folks who designed wave 9 - building in compatibility with D&D-scape.

It also sounds like Tandros has a ranged attack ability. At any rate, it all sounds very D&D-esque (not surprisingly) which means it doesn't sound very Heroscape-esque. The more I see this talked about, the more I think Pro/Anti D&Ders are coming from two different angles: Those who care about backstory and those that don't.

To many, HS units are merely game pieces with particular stats attached to them. These folks do care about aesthetics but only to a certain degree. As long as the mini looks like something, they're cool with it. It's the stats and how the piece fits into the game mechanics that matter. From this perspective D&D is a name-only and doesn't affect them at all because they're getting what they want: new figures with stats attached to them to play HS with.

To others (myself included) each piece, aside from being a collection of stats, has a "flavor" that comes from a backstory. We identify each piece with this backstory and view it in the context of that backstory. We tend to like theme armies and find it slightly disturbing when Sgt. Drake Alexander goes up against Raelin (for example). For us, the new D&D set is a set of unassociated (Faction affiliations aside) figures. At least at this point, I find myself viewing the new figures as not really fitting in to the existing storyline. Now maybe that will change. Maybe when the set actually comes out we will see a great storyline that blends these two seemingly disparate elements into one seamless story. If so look forward to it. If not...we'll see.

Brandon,

I know this is an old debate and I doubt you haven't heard this before, but the idea that D&Dscape is somehow too different in a game where elves fight giant robots, who fight revolutionary war minutemen, who fight shaolin monks, who fight WW2 paratroopers, who fight dragons, who fight men in black... seems completely, utterly ridiculous to me. I really can't take that argument seriously at all. Heroscape's theme is having no theme at all.

I am a tiny bit frustrated by the coming waves of D&Dscape, but only because it means we won't be getting new soulborg squads or marro warlords or the like. I'm fine with what's coming, I just wish other stuff was coming too.

I've already told you all - Pelloth is the 9th Elven Wizard, originally from Feylund, that went rogue and started the Drow. Backstory is all over this sucker!

Yeah, well...that's it, really. No more futuristic figs, no more historical figs...The Fantasy figs were probably my least favorite of the bunch. I dunno..

Where did we say it was going to be all generic fantasy stuff like Elves and Dragons? D&D draws on a lot of different source material, much as Heroscape does.

Have you guys ever seen a Monster Manual, or one of those posters that show everything in a DDM wave?

Even knowing what stuff will be coming out soon, when I was looking at some of those posters in an FLGS the other day, I saw a ton of stuff that I thought would be awesome to put into scape.
