Special Collection 10 - A Journey of Discovery
July 31st, 2009, 03:17 PM
Gryfalia is a retailer that sells heroscape. On July 31st at 3:17 PM he posted this vague news of a 'Wave 10 Special Collection' being slated to release on October 23rd of this year.
Much speculation followed about what the term 'Special Collection' could mean. Some thought it would be a collection of previously released figures, while many were sure that Wizards of the Coast wouldn't call it Wave 10 if it were just going to be figures from other waves. Some thought that maybe they were going to mix Marvel Heroscape packs and Standard Heroscape packs into one wave. While still others were postive that the whole thing smelled like a Hoax.

Most of us are pretty sure that this one isn't true
. Spite seems to be poking fun at how riled up members of this site get over the smallest and vaguest pieces of information that trickle down the pipes.

If you go on to follow the link that Matt Helm provided you'll find that FRP Games already has Wave 10 available for pre-order and has published the back of the box text for each of the 4 sets from the Wave:
Warriors of Fledspar: The Granite Guardians emerge from the mountainsides of Feldspar to punish trespassers by hurling great rocks with crushing force. The Quasatch Hunters fight with a feral rage when their forest home is threatened by outsiders. Moving amongst the trees like a blur, they ambush their enemies and deliver a barrage of savage blows. This pack includes 6 painted figures and 2 army cards.
Soulborgs: Surround your enemy with Soulborg power! Their power enhancing bonding abilities make these warriors a commanding force on the battlefield. Deathstalkers possess Maul power which can deliver lethal damage. This pack includes 7 pre-painted figures, 2 double-hex tiles and 2 cards.
Warriors and Soulborgs: The Warriors of Ashra use their agility well in battle, often escaping injury. These tricky elven warriors react quickly when attacked. The Deathreavers move quickly, move well and scatter when attacked as a group. This pack includes 7 pre-painted figures, 2 double-hex tiles and 2 cards.
Champions of Renown: Sir Hawthorne’s blade cuts deep. But when the battle has ended, who’s back will bear the wound? Nerak and his Glacial Swog stalk the frozen battlefields of the icy north. His presence is inspiring, and his guttural commands keep every grut sharp and focused. Their writhing forms seethe forward with inhuman speed. The arrows of their enemies sail by them, always missing. They are legend. They are the Elite Onyx Vipers. This pack includes 5 pre-painted figures and 2 cards.
Judging by this text we can now tell that two of these sets are simply re-releases of the common packs from Wave 5 and one of the sets is a retail release of the 2005 GenCon Exclusive - Nerak the Glacial Swog Rider and the 2006 GenCon Exclusive - Sir Hawthorne, along with the exclusive Elite Onyx Vipers which once upon a time came with original Master Set purchases at Walmart.
While many are excited about some of the exclusives becoming widely available to players, others feel like their exclusives, which many went to great lengths to obtain, have greatly diminished in value.
There are fans that are excited that Wizards is releasing anything at all this quickly after Wave 9 hit store shelves, but other fans are disappointed that 'special' turns out to be a relative term. The only pack that looks to include new units is the Warriors of Feldspar pack, and even with that, fans are speculating that the figures from that pack will just be repaints. They guess that the 'Granite Guardians' will be repainted Obsidian Guards and the 'Quasatch Hunters' will be repainted Dzu-Teh.

So I got a press release from Wizards containing far less information than we already know.
I've petitioned Wizards to rewrite and resend the press release so that it contains more information and doesn't misleadingly come across as if Wave 10 is a new full heroscape release. As of writing this I have yet to recieve publicly releasable information as to why Wizards has chosen to do Wave 10 in the manner that they have.

Thanks for the info, truth. From what I can tell, you seem to be about as in the dark as the rest of us.

Ooh, I don't like this one bit. To rehash figures like that and release exclusives in a wave has me worrying the end of the line. It's also simply another way to make some money on already released molds...

I've got mixed feelings on this, while I have everything BUT Hawthorne and the EOV, I really see why they're doing this.
Wave 5 is needed to be reprinted but the uniques (wave 5) are the last thing people wanna see on shelf's again. So Naturally a new pack and Exclusives pack would sell great in their place. I'd buy this up in a heartbeat (except rats.. 8 packs is enough) I just hate to see this happen to all those who've worked SO HARD to get these exclusives and then around Xmas we'll see that Master Woo or Agent Skahen are worth more then the INFAMOUS Hawthorne. I'm happy yet sad |

This news brings me great joy. Although I can't use these figures until after National HeroScape Day in October, I'll be happy to pick them up before Christmas.
I hope the Granite Guardians still have Lava Resistance, or possibly a boost when being played in New Hampshire. |

This is not a collectable game... it is expandable. Deal with the fact that the game peices will only be worth there playable values and move on.
What I love about this game (among many other things) is that nothing is out of reach for the newcomer that is patient, a noble idea that befits a noble game. |

Thanks for the summary, Truth. I'm glad to see that they will have something brand new to the game, even if they turn out to be repaints of the Dzu and Obsidians. In a way I'm actually glad they are reusing those sculpts as I think they are great but the figures are hardly ever used.
As for the exclusives release, I'd say its about time. I already have all the exclusives and spent a good amount of money acquiring them (both from ePay and GenCon) but I've also been using Nerak and Hawthorne for years now so I feel like I've gotten my moneys worth. I do wonder if this heralds the death of the GenCon exclusive permanently. |

Perhaps people should stop complaining and be happy that Wizards is releasing something so soon after Wave 9.
I think its a very very good sign. |

I'm excited about getting my hands on some of the "exclusive" figures. Although that term seem doesn't apply anymore. Not really impressed with the idea of repainted figures being passed off a something new. I mean we already do that ourselves, right? :mixed emotions:

I'm completely happy about this news in every way. WOTC earned major points for this move in my book. I realize that some people are disapointed that their rare figures are no longer worth as much. The thing is Heroscape never was meant to have super rare figures and always said it would re-release stuff. IT's been said that they were going to look for a way to do it for years, I think this is the best way they could of done it. The only way I will have a problem with this set is if the new pack is a completely new common squad. If they are repainted uniques of the lava guys and snowmen then it's great, or if they are re releases of the common squads thats fine too. Still I don't think it should be called wave 10, each wave should be a full new release, this should just be called special wave 1 or exclusive wave.
