View Full Version : Rock tutorial

In my terrain thread, I promised you a tutorial of the posted rocks and here it comes. ;)
But I need someone to correct my imperfect English, because I also want to host this tutorial on my homepage in German and English.
And sorry for the quality of the photos. Unfortunately the polystyrene reflects very strongly.
Ok, letīs start:
Material:
You really donīt need that much material for the rocks. I just used a few things:
- Polystyrene, nearly two inch thick (in Germany itīs called "Styrodur" but itīs just a brand name and I think you have other names in the US)
- Glue
- Sand
- Paints (brown, black, white,)
- a sharp knife
- brush
- 3 screws
Step 1:
First of all, you should cut a really rough shape into the polystyrene. It has to be a little bit bigger than the rocks you want to have in the end, because you have to cut away a lot. Keep in mind that it should fit on the HS tiles in the end.
http://gidian-gelaende.de/Kram/HS_Felsen/Tut_Felsen_001.jpg
Step 2:
Now you should start to improve the rough shape a bit by cutting out some upright lines. And remember: Itīs just a rock. Itīs not an architectural building with right angles and straight lines.
http://gidian-gelaende.de/Kram/HS_Felsen/Tut_Felsen_002.jpg
http://gidian-gelaende.de/Kram/HS_Felsen/Tut_Felsen_003.jpg
http://gidian-gelaende.de/Kram/HS_Felsen/Tut_Felsen_004.jpg
Step 3:
Ok, letīs get to the horizontel lines, which give the rock its typical shape. Itīs a quite simple technique which I call "cut and break".
You have to cut into the polystyrene - not in a right angle but in an angle about 45° - and then you must turn the knife around to break out a piece of the polystyrene. That gives it a small but interesting structure and you donīt have any ugly cutting-lines in the material you donīt want to have.
But be careful with the blade which can break easily.
http://gidian-gelaende.de/Kram/HS_Felsen/Tut_Felsen_005.jpg
Cut...
http://gidian-gelaende.de/Kram/HS_Felsen/Tut_Felsen_006.jpg
...and turn around to break out a piece.

Cut...

...and turn around to break out a piece.
http://gidian-gelaende.de/Kram/HS_Felsen/Tut_Felsen_009.jpg
Step 4:
With this technique you have to go on until the shape of the rock is completely done. That will take some time and itīs not only fun. ;)
http://gidian-gelaende.de/Kram/HS_Felsen/Tut_Felsen_010.jpg
http://gidian-gelaende.de/Kram/HS_Felsen/Tut_Felsen_011.jpg
http://gidian-gelaende.de/Kram/HS_Felsen/Tut_Felsen_012.jpg
Step 5:
Once you've finished the cutting-job, you can start painting. For the basecoat, I mixed some brown paint with some glue (about 70:30). The glue gives it a better hold on the polystyrene.
http://gidian-gelaende.de/Kram/HS_Felsen/Tut_Felsen_014.jpg
Step 6:
Now itīs time to fix the rock on its base. To give it more steadiness, I used some screws additionally to the glue.
http://gidian-gelaende.de/Kram/HS_Felsen/Tut_Felsen_015.jpg
http://gidian-gelaende.de/Kram/HS_Felsen/Tut_Felsen_016.jpg
Step 7:
With the same basecoat, I also painted the HS hexfields.
http://gidian-gelaende.de/Kram/HS_Felsen/Tut_Felsen_017.jpg
Step 8:
Because of the glue, you can strew some sand directly onto the wet paint. Let it dry for some hours and tap the sand. Paint the remaining sand again with the basecoat.
The rest is just drybrushing. Mix some black and white paint to two grey colors - one light grey and one dark grey. These two colors have to be mixed with the brown basecoat. Then you should have two brown-grey-tones for drybrushing. In the end, you can light it up with just a little bit of very light grey.
For the ground, you can also use some black ink:
Mix some black paint with water (about 40:60) and paint it over the brown basecout. Then take a napkin or something like that and wipe over the ground. The black ink should stay in the deeper parts, adding some shades. When it dried, go on with the drybrushing.

http://gidian-gelaende.de/Kram/HS_Felsen/Felsen_01.jpg
http://gidian-gelaende.de/Kram/HS_Felsen/Felsen_02.jpg
Ok, as I mentioned in the beginning - my English is "not perfect". ;) I hope, nevertheless you understand most of the explanations. And it would be very nice if someone could correct my text. Thanks.

I've always prefered a hotwire cutter to a knife when working with styrofoam. Styrofoam dulls the blade way too quick.
This is a great starter project. Doesn't take too much work, and it's really hard to screw up. I recomend anyone who wants to start building custum terrain give it a shot.

Itīs much easier than you might think at first sight. You donīt need any advanced terrain building skills to copy one of these rocks. Just give it a try.
But be sure to use the right material. Donīt use the polystyrene with these small beatlets which are used for packaging of TV-Sets and stuff like that. That kind of polystyrene is not good for cutting and painting.

By the way, does anyone know where you can get fine styrofoam in the U.S.?

To be honest, I have a big problem with buildings made of styrofoam from packagings, because youīll allways see what it is made of.
And there is nearly no chance to paint it without having the beatlet structure shimmering through the color in the end. Except when you cover it with plaster.
@Darkspade:
Your terrain looks quite well, but it is something completely different. Your terrain is quite big and not really structured. So itīs easy to cover it with plaster to hide the beatlet structure. With the rocks, you canīt do this, because you would lose the whole structure of the rocks.
And there ist another point concerning the beaded styrofoam: Without a hotwire-cutter its nearly impossible to cut it. At least fine cuts are not possible. I have a Hotwire-Cutter at home, but for fine cuts I allways prefer a normal cutter and thatīs why I don't work with the beaded styrofoam.

I bought my Styrodur/foam in a hardware store (or home depot? Donīt know the right translation for "Baumarkt"). Itīs normaly used for the (heat) insulation of houses. There are different names for this material, because Styrodur is just a brand name from BASF, as you can see here: >CLICK< (http://www2.basf.de/en/produkte/kstoffe/schaum/styrodur/benefit_solution.htm?id=V00-V5cHJAmD7bw241-)
In Germany, you have to pay about 6,- Euro (nearly $ 8,-) for a Styrodur board with a size of 60 cm * 120 cm * 2 cm. That are about 23,6" * 47,2" * 0,79".
Of course, you can get thicker boards up to 10 cm (3,94") which are more expensive.

Inspired by Gidian's technique, I made these out of some packing foam that came in a box of something I bought. I cut the foam with a blade, coated them with a glue/mod podge/paint coating. The dark rocks started with a black base and then several lighter shades of dry brushing. The ice rocks had a base of blue and then several lighter shades up to white of dry brushing. It was a fun project that didn't take too long. I also used my lexan mat from Cavalier as a base for the photos.

Try Plasticard. You can find it in most shops that sell model railroading stuff. If you don't put the paint on too thick at once, it usually won't warp. No Guarntee though.
You can also try 1/4th inch thick partical board. Just cut to size with a jig saw then bevel the edge with a dremel sanding tool bit. Such a small piece is unlikely to warp unless you really slap on the paint and glue.

I've covered some things made of styrofoam with a mix of PVA and wall putty (the one ready in tubes). You can pour in the mix also some black paint tubes (the one the childs use at schools, i don't know the name in english).
Paint the object with the mix: it dry fast and becomes hard: then you can use spray paint without melting it. The putty also give you some roughness that's always useful for fast drybrush effects.

one hint i would say when cutting the foam board- use a sharp knife. other wise you get tearage from the foam catching on the dull knife parts.
good job Gidian
ps any lumber yard should have the foam... not just Home Depot. got my 1" foam from my local lumber yard for about 12$(4'x8' sheet) and that will last for a loooooooooong time. i found that a 1" thick is about 3 tile levels

Great Work redic!
I went back and took a look at Gidian's customs thread. His road tiles are hand made. He madkes them out of plaster and then covers them with foam for the stone work.
I might sacrafice some molten lava tiles and then cover them with some foam as well. Not sure if it will work . . . But I'll post the outcome anyway. I did try to simulate the road tiles on my latest project with cardboard. It worked quite well.

Here is my guess, take some cereal box, cut it to fit the tile you are covering, then cut out little random shaped pieces and glue them on top, then paint.

Just finishing going through the thread. You guys are creating some pretty amazing custom terrain! It's inspirational to see what can be created with patience and skill! Great work guys.

First of all, Nice work to all you custom terrain makers what posted here. You've given me lots of ideas. I've got a younger cousin that wants to get into 'scaping, and I'm thinking about making a few of these rock structures to go with the MS i'm buying him for his birthday. He can spend his own money of official expansions, I'll make cheapy things that look more awesome.
Many thanks,

Give it a light dry brushing of white. Also, take a cotten ball and pull it apart. Add some of it to the buttom.

oh..... But what about the road.... is there an easy way to make road tiles. i don't want to buy the rttf set and i think that i could possibly make it out of the sidewalk in the marvel set

The road tiles are made from plaster and polysterene. I designed a tile that fits to the original tiles. The main difference: Itīs not as high as the HS tiles. Then I made a mould of it and casted copies with dental plaster. On the top of them I glued polysterene (about 3 mm high). The stone structure can easily be "drawn" into the polysterene with a pen or pencil. The rest is just painting.
Maybe you can also use water tiles and glue polysteren on them. That should work as well.
