So last night(and two nights ago), I played a game of what is now my 2nd favorite board game with PoF and his lil bro. My 2nd favorite board game is..... Risk. My favorite is of course Heroscape. What can I say, it takes about 15 minutes to get used to the game and learn the rules, but after that it's FREAKIN FUN! Anyway, Risk is a 'control all nations' game and is also about 90% strategy and 10% luck. I think there's a couple of different versions of Risk, but I played the original version. So yeah, I love Risk! :D

Yeah it is VERY LONG. But I don't think it's boring.

The problem with risk is that it can easily become a one sided battle, and that's not fun at all...

Yeah. Last night, I owned all of Asia and Europe, while PoF controled America, and his lil bro controled South America. Long story short, they created an alliance, they would get 7 people a turn, I would get 12, every time they would kill some of my men I would just replace them with new ones. Slowly and steadily, Egypt fell and North Africa. By that time, they gave up cause there was no chance for them to beat me. But lately, the last 6 games of Heroscape have been complete blow outs(which down-graded my liking of it since it was boring) and I'm taking a break from it. Once I get bored with Risk, I'll start playing Heroscape more. But until then, I like Risk a lot.

Play Risk 2210. It's far superior to Risk.

I hate Risk - long, has player elimination (in other words, if you're knocked out in the first hour, you're going to SUFFER), deathly dull and all dice.

On the other hand, I think that the Risk Express dice game is really good. Is it out in the US yet?

Frankly if you positively have to play this sort of territorial conquest game, seek out Antike or Vinci, or maybe Impreial. Three games that are all MUCH better than Risk. I can't vouch for it myself, but I'm told that Viktory II is another really good "Risk-like" game.

I've only played two games so far. I'm sure the first four or five games are pretty fun, but it seems like after that, it's boring.(from what you guys are telling me) I'll look into the other 'Risk' alike games. Can I at least get one person who likes Risk? JUST ONE!!!

Can I at least get one person who likes Risk? JUST ONE!!!I heard Dwyane Wade likes RISK. I used to play it all the time when I was younger with my brother and cousins. I have nothing but good memories from the game. I haven't touched it since I was 13, but I would give it another go.

I enjoy Risk, but it does have major problems. Luckily the game is very tweakable. BGG has suggestions for fixing the way reinforcements are handled, which is the biggest problem I think.

The special versions of Risk can be fun too, and have new rules that fix a lot of the old issues. LOTR Trilogy Risk is cool, as is the Star Wars Clone Wars version. I have not played SW Original Trilogy or the new Transformers version.

Risk is one of my favorites too. That game has a larger amount of strategy thanmost will admit.

And yes, the other versions of Risk rock. (I prefer Castle Risk and LOTR Risk myself.)

Another excellent Risk-like game is Conquest of the Empire. Actually, it's a great game, but it requires a very advanced group of players. It's not for pansies or retards.

Risk is pretty much a terrible game in my opinion. It combines most of the worst aspects of gaming into a long and usually pointless luck driven dice fest.

If I have to play Risk, I can be talked into 2210, but even that is a hard sell.

I try to turn Risk players on to Nexus Ops. I think it has some common ground with Risk, but it is a great game!

Ever played Attack!? If you like Risk, you should definitely give it a try. It's very similar, but with more options and overall better gameplay.

I try to turn Risk players on to Nexus Ops. Good call. I enjoyed Risk when I was a kid, but that was before I knew about other games.

Viktory II (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/23950) is fantastic, especially for a completely homebrew game. The game moves quickly and combat is very attack-oriented so you always find yourself fighting on multiple fronts. The battle system is very clever and makes you think hard about where to build on the board and how to best combine your arms. I don't play it nearly as often as I'd like.

Conquest of the Empire (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/17710) is also very good although I've only played the "2.0" rules which is essentially Struggle of Empires. Still, it is great fun and steps into the realm of area control and has some great team-based mechanics (with fluid teams throughout the course of the game) that really keeps things tense.

Another personal favorite is Nexus Ops (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/15363). Quick, easy and lots of fun. It's about as close as you'll get to a RTS in board game format. Highly recommended! Don't let the fluorescent-colored pieces scare you off, there's a solid game under that plastic.

If you want to start pushing into new and different territory, check out Shogun (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/20551). The game is all about area control and resource management although combat certainly plays a very important role in the game. If you enjoy conquest-style games I think there's a chance you'll like this as well. I've played it a handful of times now and it has quickly risen into one of my top favorite games.

Risk 2210 is pretty good...I don't own it but enjoyed playing it. I haven't played Nexus Ops yet, but I did read your review on BGG and am considering purchasing it next time it goes on sale somewhere. Or maybe I'll just wait till the next convention and roll WOC's giant d20 to win it.
