View Full Version : ron3090's BATTLE FOR EARTH (Second section DONE!)

After looking at Warhammer 40k's Cities of Death, I thought: "Man, those are kick butt awesome!" as any fan would. then I got thinking, couldn't I build one for Heroscape? And didn't Heroscape.com say that Utgar had sent troops to Earth? What happened to that? I thought that Jandar would send troops as well, and decided the city would be in the near future, on Earth.
I started by cutting 1 foot square pieces of masonite out, and then 1 foot square pieces of 1/8 inch foamcore. Then, I glued to foamcore onto the masonite. After this had dried, I drew a 1.5 inch grid into the foamcore, and deepened it with a screwdriver. After this, I spraypainted it black.
That's as far as I am now.
One thing a city needs, though, is buildings. So after seeing this tutorial on making a storage tank out of a CD spindle (http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=es&u=http://www.toposolitario.com/workshop/deposito_enol.html&sa=X&oi=translate&resnum=1&ct=result&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dhttp://www.toposolitario.com/workshop/deposito_enol.html%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-US:official%26hs%3D8GB%26sa%3DG), I just HAD to use it. I followed the steps, and made it easily in less than a day, after gluing some propoganda posters to the sides.

Dang it. This is one of those times when you wish life had an /undo button...
I was sealing my first block, when I noticed that the sealant gave everything a dusty look. It left white residue everywhere, and it looks horrible.

Me too. I just emptied out one of those suckers. The only thing that tank needs is hexes.

Looks awesome. Can I make one small recommendation on the posters? Rip them and add some dirt, it will age the posters and give it that old look. I might make one of these, though. I love it.

I thought of that, but in this part of Texas, there is no dirt. There's gravel and sediment, but no dirt. I'm not joking.

I put in a laser fence around the tank, using old capacitors as the fence pieces and red string as the lasers.

ron3090, What did you use as a primer on your storage tank?

I just used black spray paint. It not only provides shading, but the paint sticks well. To cover the tank itself, I used grey acryllic paint. The pipes and ladder were painted with copper and aluminum enamel.
EDIT: When spraying it, though, LAY THAT JUNK ON THICK. The thicker it is, the better the paint holds.

Sorry, I tried hexes, but cutting that many in a board is not only hard, but it makes creating buildings for it even harder. So instead I cut a 1.5 inch grid into it. The figures fit nicely, and I still have room for edges.

How do you resolve Heroscape issues like movement and LOS since you are not using hexes?

Movement works in a standard Horizontal/Vertical fashion. LOS is just simple "Can the unit see the target?" Unless you meant range, in which case it works the same as movement.

Okay, I've started on the second tile. This one features a small 3-level ruined building and a road. Pics coming as soon as the building is presentable.

Yeah, I meant range, sorry

Very nicely done. If you want to put it on a standard heroscape map just add a bit of cardboard around the edges to make it fit into a hex pattern. If you take a 24 piece and copy that onto a large piece of cardboard then the building on top you can just figure out what hexes need to be added.

Right now, I'm working on a gothic foamcore building that I found at the Gamer's Workshop website. The first wall is painted, so now I just need to cut and paint the second wall.

Very cool! I don't remember anything about Utgar invading earth, but I like it! here's an idea about the propaganda posters though: You're idea is that Utgar invades earth and Jaandar tries to stop him, right? Well my idea, is that earth isn't going to sit around and get invaded, so what about some recruitment posters for an Interplanetary War? If you can't make 'em, I'm offering to. Also, if Utgar can invade earth, what other planets could he invade? Marr? Feylund? Alpha Prime? I might have to give this stuff a whirl myself!!!!

I really like these. I'm a sucker for the urban decay look, in games and elsewhere.
No dirt in your parts, you could try putting the posters in the oven on low for a little while to make them yellow and cracked. I've tried this with other props and it's really easy to make them too brittle and fall apart, I'd keep a closer eye on them. Who's that green mutant guy next to the Viking? He's pretty cool.
