I looked around and I couldn't find one, and if there was one, it's sure to have tons of off-topic rubbish, so I'll start one with a clear slate.

The Legend of Zelda Discussion Thread

List your top five favorite Zelda games:
1) Majora's Mask
2) Wind Waker
3) Twilight Princess
4) Oracle of Ages (blasphemy, I know)
5) Link's Awakening

Which game did you first play?
Ocarina of Time

Who is your favorite character?
Tingle

Which Zelda game disappointed you the most?
The Minish Cap, which I believe to be the single worst Zelda Game in the history of the series. It had neat dungeons, an original concept (the shrinking), and was well designed. But what it lacked was any emotion whatsoever. The majority of the characters weren't even really flat- they had absolutely no personalities what so ever... They didn't even really bother to come up with an original story! They didn't even bother to come up with more than two new characters! Sigh...

What do you look for in a zelda game?
I look for the story and the characters; I could care less about the difficulty of the dungeons (I actually like them to be moderately easy, because then I can get through the story faster). For that reason, I like Majora's Mask more than any of the other games- It had the most realistic and compelling world of any of the games. The only ones that I think even come close are, surprisingly, the Wind Waker, and the Oracles (blasphemy, again). Majora's mask had so many small stories woven into the main story arch of the game, and those stories where more poignant and emotional than those in any other game (though a few scenes from A Link to the Past do come to mind)...

Have you participated in any online Zelda Communities?
Not really... I submitted a few small, humorous articles to the Exploding Deku Nut, but that's it.

List your top five favorite Zelda games:
1) A Link to the Past
2) Wind Waker
3) Majora's Mask
4) Ocarina of Time
5) Oracle of Seasons/Ages (They're only good if you play them together)

Which game did you first play?
A Link to the Past

Who is your favorite character?
Tingle!

Which Zelda game disappointed you the most?
Twilight Princess, for MANY reasons. First of all, everything was stolen from old games. Dark world, adult Link, starting in a village outside of Hyrule, Ganon being revived by an evil guy, even turning into an animal when in the dark world. Secondly, the Teen rating. Does Zelda really need Animated Blood all the time? Sure, for really intense scenes, like the end of OoT, but for the most part, I found it useless. Finally, it lacked a soul. It didn't have that Zelda spark. You don't thirst for adventure. The characters don't seem like friends. It's just not... fun. Zelda should be lighthearted at times. Wind Waker is so good because it had a deep, emotional story, but could still make you smile. Zelda's lost it's spark, I believe.

What do you look for in a zelda game?
Fun. Stories are great, good to have, but in the end, I just want fun. I want to laugh. I want to cry. I want to have a good time. I want to see Link get catapulted into a wall, and I want to see Link become a hero and leave his old life behind. I don't want all depressing, but I don't want all happy either. I want a good, fun, balanced game.

Have you participated in any online Zelda Communities?
I'm a member of The Desert Colossus forums, but I don't post there much anymore.

First of all let me say that I've been in love with this franchise since the first time I saw the gold cartridge for the original game waaaaay back in the mid 80's. Zelda was the first game for the NES to actually have save files. It literally changed the landscape of gaming when it arrived. Ever since I killed Gannon with the Silver Arrow when I was still a teenager I've been thirsting for more Zelda adventures, and I doubt that will ever change.

My favorite Zelda games...

1. Wind Waker - the best all the way around
2. Link to the Past - restored the franchise for the SNES and set the bar for all other releases
3. Ocarina of Time - incredibly well planned dungeons
4. Legend of Zelda - the first game is still fun to play
5. Link's Awakening DX - LoZ on the go? What's not to love?

Which game did I play first....

Well the first one obviously. :P

Who is my favorite character?

Why, Link of course.

Which game disappointed me the most?

The second game was the most disappointing. After the awesome first title the Adventure of Link was a kick in the teeth. They took all of the elements that made LoZ original and dumped them and added all the generic crappiness of other side scrolling games of the day. It was awful and thoroughly disappointing.

What do I look for in a Zelda game?

I like collecting things. New weapons, new maps, new friends, etc., etc., etc. The building up of your character is the most appealing aspect to me.

Do I participate in online Zelda communities?

No. I have too little time, but I'd love to be able to.

Now, I have to bring something up. I've used this phrase before - it was a good game, but a terrible Zelda. I can say the same thing about TP. It's a good game, bad Zelda.

I don't see why you so loath Twilight Princess- The story is pretty nice (so far- I haven't yet finished  ), the dungeons well designed so far (except for the water temple one- I skipped the second half by dropping down to the boss door from the chandelier...), the characters, though sparsely distributed, well defined and round, containing some of the most breathtakingly beautiful and impressive locations yet to grace zelda (Wind Waker has most of the others, with a few going to MM and OoT)... ? The Minish Cap is much, much, much worse in all respects.

Though, I guess there's no accounting for taste...

johnny139
June 25th, 2007, 11:23 AM
It's too different because it's too... the same. Every Zelda game (pretty much) as brough something new to the table. What did TP bring? Being a wolf? Outside of that, name pretty much ANYTHING, and I can point out which game it's from.

Dictatorbilbo
June 25th, 2007, 11:29 AM
At least it had a new story and good characters. If they had released this before AlttP or OoT would you loathe it so much?

johnny139
June 25th, 2007, 11:31 AM
No, because it would have been original. It's not original. It's a rehash of OoT with elements from every other game. The story is stolen from other games. The characters... are pretty original, I'll give you that, but there are very few factors that redeem it in my eyes. It's like a Zelda rip-off instead of a real Zelda. It lacks the spark.

Dictatorbilbo
June 25th, 2007, 11:32 AM
Name where the story came from.

johnny139
June 25th, 2007, 11:35 AM
Link starts off in a small village in the outskirts of Hyrule. Backstory from LoZ.

A darkness is encreeching over Hyrule, and it can change people into animals. The darkness is from OoT, and the animal part is from ALttP.

How far are you? I can continue as far as you've gotten.

Dictatorbilbo
June 25th, 2007, 11:43 AM
The combinations are new, and the characters and their motivations change things around even more. In fact, according to your logic, one can argue that absolutely zero stories are truly original- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Thirty-Six_Dramatic_Situations.

The Characters, the context, and the combination of plots is what makes things original- Twilight Princess has all of those...

And the darkness is supposed to be a direct reference to the dark world of ALttP, correct?

johnny139
June 25th, 2007, 11:47 AM
I think you're missing the point. The story wasn't original to the Zelda series. They just added everything from old games, put it in a blender, tossed some originality in and served it. There are good references to past games and bad references.

Lets take WW for example. It was overflowing with references to OoT! But it made a point of saying "This isn't OoT. This isn't the Hero of Time. This is a different game." In TP they milked OoT for all it was worth. "Look, it's the Temple of Time! Look, it's the Gorons! Look, it's Death Mountain, just like before! Remember? You had fun then, you'll have fun now!" It used past games as a crutch instead of as a ladder.

Dictatorbilbo
June 25th, 2007, 11:59 AM
No- some of the places and some of the game's elements are poached from other games, but the story and the characters are pretty original.

True, the Twilight Princess did lean on some amount of sentimentality towards other Zelda games; but it's story isn't really lifted straight from any of the other games. As you said, the characters are original- and aren't characters intrinsically linked to plot? Think of OoT- what if Sariah had been replaced by Tingle? And Ganon by the Happy Mask Salesman? And Zelda by Ralph (Oracles)? Would the plot, if was pretty much the same in all other aspects, be or feel the same?

johnny139
June 25th, 2007, 12:04 PM
But the story is, pretty much, the same. Link embarks on a journey through Hyrule. He goes through a Forest Temple, then a Fire Temple, then a Water Temple. This is forgivable, however. But the fact the Fire Temple was ruled by Gorons and the Water Temple was owned by the Zoras make it scream rehash. Then you get the Master Sword - ringing any bells? This is the same plot from ALttP and OoT. Not a bit of originality in it. A child/girl important in Link's life is kidnapped, the reason for his leaving. Aryll. And this is only the first half of the game!

You have the wii? Cool, me too! My favorite is Twighlight princess. It was fun, long, and a tad easier than the others. I have a bit of trouble with hard games and tp was my level. Also, the controls were cool.

My least favorite was majoras mask. Maybe because I was like 6, but the pressure of the time limit scared the crap out of me. Also, it was a bit scarier than say, twighlight princess. Ive ony played OOT, MM, OOA,WW,and TP. Phantom hourglass looks and supposidly is, amazing.

The original is still the best. But Links Adventure does not get the credit I think it deserves. The story of Link to the Past was epic.

List your top five favorite Zelda games:
1) the original Legend of Zelda
2) Link's Adventure
3) Link to the Past
4) Twilight Princess
5) Ocarina of Time

Which game did you first play?
The Original. I'm an old timer.

Who is your favorite character?
Shadow Link. Final boss in Link's Adventure.

Which Zelda game disappointed you the most?
Wind Waker. It lacked what made the others great.

What do you look for in a zelda game?
Adventure, story, item collecting. The Master Sword.
Have you participated in any online Zelda Communities?
Nay. Playing the games is good enough for me.

This is only my personal opinion. To me LoZ is founded on a degree of Epicness. The cartoony-kiddy feel of Wind Waker was a divergence from the dark and epic theme of the original games: finding the Master Sword in a secret passage beneath a grave, exploring caves with a lantern. Playing Wind Waker was more like controlling a Link-Teletubby hybrid in modern day Cartoonetworkland.

Edit: Yea, my 1ooth post :o

I liked the lighthearted take that Wind Waker exhibited. To me the animation style hearkened back to classic 40's era Disney. There was a lushness that was only slightly washed with a certain element of darkness. Areas like the Deku Tree and Windfall Island translated well because it gave an added sense of magic. I know that many folks like darker games, but for my inner child Wind Waker was/is the best Zelda ever. I've played it through three times now and I still love it.

*sheesh*

Currently I'm remembering five Zeldas that I've played: the original; the one on gameboy with the chain; the sidescroller; the N64 one; one where you switched back and forth between two different Hyrules.

The original was the best, followed by the gameboy one. They both had spectacular top down gameplay. I'll go with the N64 one next, pretty good translation to the first person though I HATED fishing. Between the last two I'd have to pick the sidescroller if only because the back and forth one was so forgettable.

The original IS the reason I play video games. I figured out every secret on my own and played it through dozens, if not hundreds of times. I bought the GBA version and play it too (though I can't quite remember where everything is anymore and I didn't remember the stupid Knights being quite as difficult as they seem to be for my aging reflexes).

I am assuming you are calling Link's Awakening the "gameboy one".

Ocarina of Time is what you called "the N64 one" - though Majora's Mask was also on the N64.

Links Adventure would definitely be the "sidescroller".

And that would leave A Link to the Past as your least favorite....and that baffles me. LttP was the most true to the original of all of the sequels. Am I missing something here...?

I have to agree with Markwars on this one. Link to the Past was a great game for all those who loved the original. It was like a return to the original but with better graphics, more items and slightly more complex game play.

I LOVED Wind Waker for all the reasons you said you don't like it for. It was epic. A Link to the Past was epic, and Link had bright pink hair! The cartoony style was great, as well. I like a dark Zelda - Majora's Mask was great and dark. But the core of Zelda is fun and adventure, which Wind Waker delivered. The only flaw was that it was too short - they should have pushed it back a bit, and added some more dungeons. Not having Great Fish Dungeon was a jip. But hey, differing takes on the series, I suppose...

Only that of the five I played it was the least memorable which is not to say it was bad, just... *shrug*

The original was a flame burning bright. All the secrets - flaming every tree, bombing every rock, pushing every pillar - finding each and every heart container - the joy of acquiring the RED RING for the first time... Ah!

Link's Awakening introduced the excellent chain and was eveything I wanted in a portable Zelda game. I remember waking on the beach, weaponless and the struggle to figure out all the puzzles of getting from place to place.

Ocarina of Time was a great translation and worked well with the Day/Night thing and the horse. I also loved diving from the waterfall... breathtaking!

I still remember fighting my shadow in Link's Adventure and how much I enjoyed the "jump on enemies with the sword pointed down" move. I remember figuring out how to enter houses in odd ways to learn new moves. Not the same, but memorable.

Link to the Past... I vaguely remember the sword in the forest, the stupid temple in the bottom left of the map (don't remember why it was a stupid temple, only that I disliked it for some reason) and some area late in the game where you had to switch back and forth several times to figure out the right path to... something? someone? Sorry markwars - it just didn't leave the impression the others did.

I totally agree with these two things that you say Aldin. I had the map that came with the original LoZ and I would put a little mark on every secret entrance (bush, cave) I loved finding every little thing. And for me the greatest thing was finding the Master Sword for the first time. When you push that grave and the music does the secret noise...it was brilliant.

List your Top Five Zelda Games
1. Legend of Zelda (NES)
2. Twilight Princess
3. Ocarina of Time
4. A Link to the Past
5. Link's Adventure

Which Game Did you First Play?
Legend of Zelda

Who is Your Favorite Character?
Ganon, the ultimate evil guy. Nuff said.

Which Zelda Game Disappointed you the most?
Its a tie between Wind Waker and Majora's Mask. Wind Waker's graphics are way too kiddie for me to even consider this one to be worth playing. Link is this epic warrior who goes and kills Ganon every chance he gets. I was waiting for a good Gamecube upgrade from Ocarina of Time, and this was a huge disappointment. Majora's Mask just pissed me off way too much when I got the end of the game where you have to Goron roll over a ramp to get a piece of heart and I almost popped a blood vessel in my head trying to get it. I never did finish the game after that.

What do you look for in a Zelda game?
Link has to look cool, but a lot of the same stuff has to be put in and mixed around. That is why Twilight Princess was so amazing when I finally got to play it. It had the graphics upgrade Link needed with so much fun gameplay put into it. Twilight Princess takes place in a certain Timeline of the Zelda series and having the same places and stuff as Ocarina of Time that other games did is understandable since it did take place years after Ocarina of Time. Twilight Princess had all the little extra secrets and hidden things that I loved spending time getting and the game was just as long as I liked.

Most of you wouldn't understand why Link 2, blew so much azz. Those of us, that were waiting and waiting for it. Had high expectations. Nintendo even knew it sucked because they pulled a fake "chip shortage" scam. to increase demand and sales. That game went for $65-$75 around that time, when most games were $40-$50. It was a total disappointment. Lots of hype, and the gameplay sucked. If we wanted to play a dragon warrior type game, that's what we would have bought.

Alright, I'm reviving this, for one reason - I just beat ALttP (well, a few days ago), every piece of heart, every item, with 34 deaths/saves! AWESOME! It cements my belief that it's the best Zelda game ever.

I mean, there was not one area I found impossible or too easy. I mean, the bosses were a bit simple, but that was mostly because I knew how to beat them before fighting them... for the most part. Mothra was tough. And the ice guy with a ton of eyes? Him, too.

A great ending, too. Showed off everyone, from the Forest Thief to the King to the Sick Kid at Kakariko. Plus, the final scene... epic.

And thus, my first 100% Zelda. Perhaps I'll tackle OoT next...

OK, now, I believe Bilbo pointed me at ZREO a while ago in this thread... well... they have a new project: Battlescapes.

What is it? As far as I can tell, they're doing an audio-book kinda thing about the fall of Hyrule, after OoT, told about in the start of Wind Waker. It. Is. Awesome. The narrator is generic, and Zelda sounds a bit young, but man... Ganondorf is PERFECT. They need to hire that guy for a REAL Zelda game.

Don't believe me? SEE FOR YOURSELF. (http://www.zeldabattlescapes.com/main/index.php) I eagerly await the next update.

I actually didn't like ALttP. It was a generic save-the-princess game with characters as deep as the kiddy pool. Its items were used almost only in the dungeon you got them, and never again. Like other games of the time, you could easily take shortcuts in the game without knowing, and then getting stuck because of that. Half the time you didn't know what to do next.

Of course, I haven't finished it, but these are my thoughts so far. I'm just trying to get the last pendant. Maybe this will turn out to be one of those games that gets much better in the second half, making up for the first.

As for Twilight Princess, I LOVED this game. It had deep characters that developed as you went on. The dungeons were challenging. The items were mostly original, and used mostly for the whole game. So what if it copied other games? I liked that. It showed that this was the same Hyrule of OoT, but changed from thousands of years. And the elements of other games it did copy were expanded on. The only regret I had for this was that the bosses were just too easy. They were awesome looking, with great concepts. But they just went down too fast.

OoT, I still haven't played. I was a deprived child, and never had an N64. There are so many classics I missed.

I agreed with everything that you just said... until I got about halfway through the game. After that it felt... Dead? The desert was completely empty. Snowpeak was a one way road to the dungeon. Kakoriko was empty. There aren't more than 5 or so real side-quests. I think it really suffered from the same half-finishedness that the Wind Waker did.

The story, characters, cool items, interesting dungeons, and challenging enemies. The Wind Waker brought all that together in a good way, but I have to say that Majoras Mask is an extremely close second for my favorite, I replayed that game more than every other Zelda game on my list combined.

Have you participated in any online Zelda Communities?
No.

I don't see why so many of my friends flat out refuse to play Wind Waker just because of the graphics. Ocarina Of Time had similar ones (Sort of).

Wind waker graphics are great. Around the time that game was released and forever before that I liked games with the cartoony type graphics such as Mario so that is why I picked this up. Also I love sailing about in that boat!

I also loved the Wind Waker! 2nd most beautiful zelda game! (I'm loathe to admit, but, despite its deficiencies in other areas, Twilight Princess takes the most-pretty award by an enormous margin)

The graphics in TP were superb, no doubt, but the colors were too plain and dark for my tastes.

Hmm... The one scene that stood out to me is when you first get to lake hylia in the twilight... I absolutely love how that looked...

Twilight Princess looks awesome. I loved playing this game, although I agree with Dictatorbilbo about the Desert just being empty - i remember walking back and forth and it took ages.

Oddly enough, the desert was my (second) favorite part. I loved the vastness of it; all of the little alcoves and such. The Ice was the best though, because ice is ALWAYS the best.

What? I absolutely hated the desert. It was so... dead. I would've loved a small nomadic caravan. Or even an eccentric hermit. Or ghosts. Or something.

But, I must admit, the ice on the way up to snowpeak was cool.

Tingle should have been in the desert.

Sorry, force of habit.

I beat TP a couple days ago and I just have to ask a couple things (not that you'll likely be able to answer them.)

1. What's the deal with Zant? At first he looks kind of cool and evil, but when the helmet comes off.......

2. Why does a yeti need such a big butt?

My favourite part of the game was the Ganondorf horse fight.

That's actually one of my favorite things about this game. He's a villain, and once his helmet comes off, you think he's really, really stupid, crappy, and unlikable. THAT is how a villain should. You shouldn't like them, you shouldn't like to hate them, you should just... not like them.

2. Why does a yeti need such a big butt?

For the same reason his wife (also a yeti) look so much like a human.

Not me! Looks eh, don't like the TP style (too drab), and the extension isn't very Zapper like. Maybe if it's half-price, as i can't pass up a $10 Nintendo thingymajig, I'll get it, but that's it.

Uh? The Zapper is being released the same day as Links Crossbow Training. You probably saw a 3rd party one. I think its called the blaster.
