Myself, personally, would take one of each item and store them away unopened.
Then I'd then take two castles, two RttFF, one MS, two TT, and all of TV to add to my personal collection.
Being that I have all I need of everything else, what ever is left-over I'd keep available to use as prize materials for tournaments or gamedays.
How about the rest of you?

7. PRIZE RESTRICTIONS: If a winner is a minor, prize will be awarded to parent or legal guardian and all responsibilities of the minor will be assumed by winner's parent or legal guardian. No substitution or transfer of a prize permitted except at sole discretion of Sponsor, who reserves right to substitute all or part of a prize with one of comparable or greater value. Winners (or if a minor, winner's parent or legal guardian) are solely responsible for payment of all taxes on prize and for any expenses related to the acceptance and use of prize not specifically stated herein. Winners (or if a minor, winner's parent or legal guardian) will be issued an IRS 1099 Form for fair market value of prize.
Well... that's a bunch of garbage right there...
Maybe I'd take some of the winnings and auction them off on eBay to make up for the taxes.

I would sort through the pile, keep a few, and maybe trade some of them for the money to cover taxes and another storage container. I can't believe how much room this game consumes. Then I would probably just give the rest away.

That is a lot of stuff and would be great to win. The taxes on that stuff will be around 300 to 500 dollars (can't remember the exact percent on Gift Tax and could be modified by which state you live in too.)
I would also put one of each item into storage, take some of the items for my collection, use some of the items for customs, use some for trade bait and then give some away to my friends (including some of the peeps here that I know would like to get a nice HS surprise in the mail.) :D

i'm sure the big retailers aren't happy with how much shelf space it consumes either. if the game's popularity does increase exponentially, HAS will have to conceed to just offering the Master Set in stores and sell all expansions in their online ToyShop.

That way you'd have some money to help with taxes, and be able to keep what you wanted.
This offer goes to anyone who wins that had just planned on giving some of it away.

Taxes will be bad enough, 30-50% (disclaimer: I'm not a tax professional :) ) of $1,300 being $400-650 - but shipping won't be neglible either, I would imagine. So, good news for all of us losers :)
EDIT: just curious, does anyone know how the tax would be applied: is it straight off the value (as I assumed) or does it factor into the total filing at tax time?

Here is your answer, I won the 15,000 dollar trip to La through Hasbro is case you did not know. It is added directly as income. I talked to my accountant and he said I can expect to pay around 3000$ for my trip probably. Worth it for the kid though.

I have used this tactic before and you are correct...one does not fare well. I unfortunately don't know when to shut up and have slept on a floor, couch, in car quite a few times.

Here's what I would do:
I would add these to my collection:
(5) HeroScape Master Sets (I'd likely sell or trade all of the figures, dice, order markers, round markers, and rulebooks).
(4) Road to the Forgotten Forests (probably sell the Dumutefs)
(3) Thaelenk Tundras
(2) Mallidon's Prophecy Grut Orcs
(5) Fortresses of Archkryies
(1) Zanafor's Discovery Soulborgs & Elves
(1) Zanafor's Discovery Greeks & Vipers
(2) Mallidon's Prophecy Snipers & Vipers (I'd likely sell the Snipers)
(2) Utgar's Rage Drones & Minions (I'd likely sell the Minions)
(3) Utgar's Rage Knights & Swog Riders (I'd likely sell 2 sets of Knights)
(3) Jandar's Oath Gorrillas & Hounds (I'd keep only one of the Gorillas, but all of the Hounds)
(1) Thora's Vengeance Soulborgs
(1) Thora's Vengeance Gladiators & Agents
(1) Thora's Vengeance Warriors & Soulborgs
(1) Thora's Vengence Ninjas & Samurai
I would sell these on eBay to recoup tax money:
(1) Orm's Return
(1) Heroes of Lindsfarme
(2) Mallidon's Prophecy Heroes of Bleakwoodes
(4) Utgar's Rage Heroes of Barrenspurs
(4) Jandar's Oath Heroes of Nostralunds
(2) Zanafor's Discovery Lawmen & Samurais
(2) Zanafor's Discovery Heroes of Trollsfords
These items I'm not sure what I'd do...maybe sell/trade, maybe keep:
(2) Road to the Forgotten Forests
(2) Thaelenk Tundras
(1) Zanafor's Discovery Soulborgs & Elves
(1) Zanafor's Discovery Greeks & Vipers
(2) Utgar's Rage Drones & Minions
(1) Utgar's Rage Knights & Swog Riders
(2) Mallidon's Prophecy The IX Roman Legions
(4) Utgar's Rage Devourers & Minutemen (I'd keep one Minutemen)
(1) Jandar's Oath Gorrillas & Hounds
(4) Jandar's Oath Kilts & Commandos
(4) Jandar's Oath Monks & Guards

What would I do if I won? Play some serious Heroscape.
Well, since I need basically all of the prizes I'd keep it all. The Orm's Return is optional, or custom fodder (can you say Tiamat?). I have 1 TT now, this would make 6 total for me. I was just thinking at work how if I had 6 TT, I could get 5 MS's worth of 2nd ed. water tiles and glue them together in 6, 4, and 3's and drill to make bases for the all the glaciers. Voila, extra ice tiles. Other than that I'd probably trade/sell the MS terrain and other items so I can pay taxes, get more sparkly water, and/or get the VW and RTTFF sets that will get me to the appropriate terrain ratios.

Could you please enlighten us then jcb231? And while you are enlightening us about what is wrong with the post you quoted perhaps you can tell us how you know whatever it is that you know?
I'm not trying to call you to task, it's just that I found your post to be uninformative and more than a little divisive. You are a long time member of the online Scape community and I found your response out of character for your usual brand of enthusiastic posting. I don't know what your background is though and for all I know you spend 40 hours a week answering people's tax law questions or correcting their tax law mistakes.
I'll be the first to admit that I have no knowledge of virtually any tax laws - nor do I really want to fill my brain with that - that's why we have accountants (and auto mechanics and lawyers and doctors and anyone else that does something I don't want to touch with a ten foot pole). In fact I'll admit that I am so ignorant of tax laws that it never even occured to me that the winner would have to pay taxes on this, and I'm sure I'm not the only one in this boat.
Cheers! I'll look forward to your repsonse.

The dollar value of the prize would have to be declared income, as skyknight indicated. The actual tax would be determined once all income is totalled, and deductions subtracted, etc. etc. The percentage is based on the total income. For some in the high tax brackets, the tax will be pretty steep, but the ability to pay the tax will be good. For the lower income brackets, the taxes will be MUCH smaller, if there are any at all. Something that might be a problem for the lower income folks is that they may have to file a 1040 form instead of one of the "simpler" forms.
And yes the tax system needs to be overhauled. A flat tax or a consumption (sales) tax would be about as simple as it gets. So that being said, it won't happen in my life time.

June 27th, 2006, 06:28 AM
My prize winnings are being directly added to what my wife and I make. Agent MInivan is correct. I tried to get it put in my sons name because taxes are much less on him. Hasbro gave me a big NO. So at the end of the year I have 15,000 income that has been untaxed. At my current tax rate this will drop me at about a $2500 payment on this prize. I am reposting this because I do not think many of you are reading prior posts.

Thank you Agent Minivan & skyknight for bringing this tax issue to a close. As I followed this thread I was wondering when someone would get it right. Both of you are correct. The 1099 the winner receives with the fair market value of the prize will be added to the rest of their income and be taxed accordingly plus (please correct me if I'm wrong) the winner is also responsible for any sales tax, though I don't know how that would work if the winner is out of state.
If you take the fair market value of about $1285 and tax it at a rate of 25% the tax comes out to about $320. The sales tax at a 6% rate is about $77. I'm sure several of you have done the math already but for those of you who haven't......there you are. These figures, however are not (IMO) realistic. I figure when it all comes out in the wash, a person with an income of lets say 50k/yr once the 1099 is added may have to pay an additional...I don't know...$180 - $200 give or take a little.
If this is too heavy for this board please let me know and I will crawl back under my rock. Otherwise I hope this information helps.

Posed my question then lost track of this thread - thanks, skynight, Mini, and pashadowops. Never having won a prize more substantial than a pair of knee pads from an online skateshop, I was confusing the tax on the prize with the tax on gambling winnings (in most cases applied directly to the winnings at a flat rate, not pooled with other income and computed at year's end.)

I agree with your statements. Pretty much what I said and I got bashed.

My wife won a trip for us to go to Europe through The Amazing Race this year. That trip will nick us on taxes, but it's still cheaper than paying to go there without it. We're thinking of it like an 60% discount on a trip of a lifetime. We've probably depleted our "luck deposits" for a while but I'd happily pay taxes if I won in the Hasbro sweeps. Why not spend 30 cents to make another 70¢ in free product--or just take the cash equivalent (if Hasbro offers the option)?

If I'm following correctly, can I have one of your paychecks?
And toddrew what kind of rate do they tax your gambling winnings? ( I don't gamble, so I have no idea) IIRC the 1040 has a slot for gambling winnings. Now that I've typed that it makes a lot of sense. If you win something that has to be reported, they take the taxes out BEFORE you spend it all on further gambling. Then when you file you get to report gambling income paid to you and then gambling related taxes that were paid by you. In most cases you come pretty close to even, or get a refund.

blasted contest after I spent about 10 min. looking at the rules I think they divide the listed products into 5 groups but if ya get the whole thing whoa...thats a lot-o-plastic
If I win first I'd buy a few more tabels to build it and with my copies of all heroscape(cept for nerak hes a promo he dont count ok) I would make a freakin sweet battlefield but to my demise these friggin cats would just go and lay EVERYWHERE on it

I would also put one of each item into storage, take some of the items for my collection, use some of the items for customs.
I would love to see your storage. Or your collection.

I would take a copy of every figure and store them in an air tight facility unopened. I would take one copy of each and open it and store them in battle stances and such in a giant wall to wall glass shelf (I do not know how I would buy that. I would make the blue playing board in the 3rd codex. I would flock every tile (pond sides and everything) then I would buy ten storage containers get nether stickers, and sort them all out. Then I would go and have enough spare parts to be editing figures for a couple years.
Saying all this makes me want to enter, but I wouldn't win.
I would not give them away, I would give my customs that after five master sets worth of proactive would be bitchen and give those away.
I would change my room and with that much I could convince my friends to play (or swim in HS minis)

Yautjahunter the way I read it, there are five Grand prizes each of which contain the contents listed in the Offical Rules. So that's approx. $1285 worth-o-plastic for each Grand prize. Yikes!!!!
BTW, since I never answered the question this thread was started about, I would give it all to my son. The only units I would not unpackage would be like, one of the master sets cause we already have one and any of the units we've purchased thus far, I would keep they're duplicates packaged. Then we would build and play....LOTS!!

Sorry, lost track of this thread again (that auto-email to notify me of posts to threads I've posted in is still a little dodgy, it seems ;) ) This is all third hand, so don't get into a bar fight over it: my Mother-in-law is the gambler (and the one with the $$ to make it seem like a reasonable past-time :) ) and I don't remember how the conversation came up, but I think gambling winnings are subject to a 30% rate regardless of income bracket.
But as you alluded to, unless one takes some huge slot jackpot or large poker table pot, most figure to have total losses, not total gains (that's how casinos stay in business, dontchaknow :) ), so usually a non-issue I assume.
Like pashadowops, I don't think I actually posted an answer to the question put forth by the thread: needless to say, there would be many happy kids in our neighborhood :D

I originally read it the same as Yautjahunter: that each winner was getting a master set and some assortment of expansions, but when I read it again, yeah, each winner gets all that crap  :)

yes I see this when I first read it I thought that the "each player reciecves random items of heroscape including..." but now I think of it as the whole package because it says "win the battle shone here" and theres no way thats 1 master set/tundra/castle/RTTFF...

just look closely at this and think it over NO PURCHASE NECESSARY. (5) Grand Prizes (One for each Sweepstakes Entry Period): Various HeroScape products including: see there is a catch and I think you have to read the fine print of the rules. hmm these contests are all the same it says you can build the ultimate battlefield, BUT maybe the catch is that you have to win all 5 entry periods. ughh I dont even know what to think about the prize anymore

Dudes, what's with all of the tax-payment fantasies?
When you guys imagine winning the lottery, do you immediately start groaning about all the telemarketers who would start calling you? How you'd have to get an unlisted number? Do you start estimating what percentage of your friends and relatives you'd have to break relationships with because they turned into money-grubbers?
Sheesh. It's like, "Yeah, every cloud has a silver lining, but as it turns out, I'm allergic to silver."
As for me, I'd take a couple of vacation days, lug all that stuff and my current collection to my local game store, and build the biggest frickin' Heroscape map anyone in my neck of the woods has ever seen.

Thanks, skyknight. Not only is my collection pathetic compared to others on this board, but so are my dreams. :(
