View Full Version : Girder and Panel

I've got a bunch of old Girder and Panel playsets that I've used for wargaming through the years, and with my new heroscape terrain and upcoming Marvelscape I was planning on dragging it out and seeing how it worked. Out of curiousity I googled it and was surprised to find that it's back in production with a new manufacturer. So I thought I'd mention it here since someone might like it. Her's an image of a sample building:

I've found that the scale works really well with 28-32mm figures. I used these buildings with Heroclix, which is about the same scale as Heroscape. The doors are too small...but that's because they're printed at 1/2 story height instead of full story height. But each "story" of the building is the correct height for scale.
The crowns on the "girders" are somewhat fragile. I think this is what has prevented it from being a more popular toy. But I also noticed the new manufacturer now sells replacement parts.
To see some really impressive train and city lay-outs with this stuff, check out this website:

I'm not sure how well the green building bases will fit on Heroscape hexes...at some point I'll drag out my old stuff, build some skyscrapers and see how it fits. When I do, I'll try to take some pictures of it.[/url]

Fun! And possibly very useful, too! Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Wow!! I've been looking for a source of girder and panel sets besides ebay. I've picked up two smaller sets to see how they look but this could be answer for all those games that need modern buildings. Zombiefest!!
Thanks for posting the pics and link, SgtHulka!

Are they worth it?
Looks like they could be easily modded into custom terrain as an LOS blocker.

I'll let you know as soon as they get here. If they are close to 28/30 mm scale then they will definitely be worth it.

Well, the website describes them as "HO" scale, which is more like 20mm scale, but unless they've shrunk the toy it's really closer to "S" scale, 1/64, which is more like 28mm. Heroscape I'd reckon is about 32mm, so they might technically be a tiny bit small, but I think heroclix is about the same scale as Heroscape, and if my memory serves they looked pretty good next to the heroclix figures.
If you look at the link I provided, the girder and panel buildings are being used next to "O" scale terrain (which I think is about 1/48 scale). So it's definitely too big for "HO".
As I mentioned, when I get a chance I'll build some girder and panel buildings, put them on the hex terrain, and place some Krav Maga agents on the roof to see how they look. I'll try and take a picture when I do.
That all said, obviously, they'd probably work better with Marvelscape than Heroscape. They don't look particularly "Valhalla"

My uncles had these when I was a kid (figure 30+ years ago) and was surprised to see them in a hobby store window awhile ago.
It was fun to play with and while the girders held up well, the brittle paneling used to bend and tear easily. I thought they would be too small for HeroScape, but regardless, they bring back a lot of fun memories.

Those are cpl but may be more appropriate for clix games that have a square based board. They would also be good for mechwarrior...
If someone gets some, please post pics with figures for scale...
