I love the moose god heads

Hehe, Iīve been to IKEA (I think you have it in the USA as well, don't you?) at the weekend and there I found little drinks called "Moose Blood". And the moose heads stuck on the bottles, so I had to buy two of them. ;)

i have been wondering if people from Hamburg are called Hamburgers

Not Hamburgers, but Hamburger (without the "s"). But in German that means the same like hamburgers in English.
But I think, as John F. Kennedy said in Berlin: "Ich bin ein Berliner" (I am a Berliner), he didnīt mean: "I am a donut." ;)

Greetings from Germany, the home of hamburgers ;)

Wow. That lava actually made me look twice...I thought that it had to be photoshop or another program. That is (with appologies to the custom masters here at the .com) by far the best looking custom terrain I've ever seen.

By the way, I'm teaching English in Korea right now, so don't worry--your writing is very clear and the only mistakes you made are very common to 2nd language learners (build is an irregular verb, for example, that everyone wants to change to builded, not built). I'd love to have a student as able as you in one of my writing classes. I'd give you better grades for doing custom Heroscape terrain!

Yes, itīs completely custom made. The prototype was made of clay and then I made a mold of it, to cast resin copies.

and the building with the robed figures styrofoam?

Youīre nearly right. Again, I made molds of the wall elements and the figures. The prototypes were made of styrofoam and paperboard, the copies are casted with plaster.

I finally finished the altar (and some other projects, I will post later) and can show you some pictures. Unfortunately I had not much time this morning for taking the pictures and the camera is not good as well. My wife will be back tomorrow with our other camera and then I will take some better pictures and integrate them into my homepage.

Hopefully the pictures are not to big:

Unfortunately the quality of the pics is not the best one. I will take some better photos when I have some time and then I will integrate them into the gallery of my site.

[EDIT]: I forgot the update on my custom tiles.
I reworked the first casting results a little bit and made I final mold of them. Now I have the base of the tiles and I can glue differently shaped pieces on them to get different terrain pieces. Here is an example for a street:

http://gidian-gelaende.de/Kram/110607/Tiles_2.jpg

As you can see, one of the tiles has 4 small holes. I use it for terrain with plants which you can stick into the wholes.

very nice! your work has upped the bar a bit. :) i'd like to see more heroscape buildings/temples. i really like the way you paint/weather your work. great job

with the custom tiles do you use plaster? i've been thinking of making some molds for tiles myself, but was thinking of just doing a RTV two-part mold. are your tiles able to stack on top?

great job and look forward to seeing more heroscape customs!

Gidian
June 11th, 2007, 12:22 PM
Hi Cale,

youīre right, I use plaster to cast the tiles. I was thinking about doing a two-parted mold but I decided to go for two-parted tiles for two reasons:

1. I just have to change the upper part to get different tiles. And I donīt have to cast the upper part necessarily. I can also build it from foam. Thatīs good for tiles I just need a few times.

2. Itīs quite easier and faster to cast one-parted molds.

And yes, you can stack the tiles on top of the original tiles. That was very important for me and thatīs why I had to go for the two-parted tiles.

Btw - I builded the prototype completely without using the original tiles to prevent from any copyright issues.

How well do the plaster hex pieces hold up over time? I think of plaster as being fairly brittle. It seems like the interlocking pieces would get chipped and worn down from frequent assembling and disassembling. Can they survive a little abuse?

Beautiful work on everything. And I love the Heroquest figure on top of the Observatory. I've been trying to remember the name of that game for a month, and now it makes 2 appearances this week (also in Leifkicker's custom terrain thread).

i think it's the locking system that would have the copyright- so i don't think you are safe and can sell those. might be wrong though.

But I don't want to sell them anyway, so that wouldnīt be a problem.

No, not really. For the guys I play with, atmosphere and a nice looking battelfield is not that important. If they build the map, they mix all types of tiles without looking for grass (flocked and not flocked), sand, etc. In the end, our gaming tables are very... colorful. ;) :(

But when the customization of all my tiles is done, it wouldn't be important if they mix it. Then hopefully all maps will look good. ;)

Those are made out of a mold if I recall correctly....right Gidian?

Gidian
August 13th, 2007, 04:15 AM
Right, but the protptype I made myself. Itīs not really difficult to build. Just take two long pieces of wood and glue planks made from balsa wood on it. Cut away some edges with a sharp knife making it looking older. Then take a string and put it around the planks.
At the ends, glue a piece from a HS tile (just cut out a piece of the rim), making the bridge fit to your tiles so that you can put it between them.
Glue two last planks onto the ends to prevent the bridge from sliding down.
The rest is just painting.

Last weekend, I found some cheap plastic trees at a small store and I thought, the would fit to HS perfectly. So I bought about 20 of them and started to build a forest including some terrain pieces with forest soil (right word?). The photos are very bad because I took them this morning with very bad light. I will take some better photos within the next days. So take this just as a preview. ;)

The forest looks great! My only concern would be access to the figures. Moving them could be difficult and determining LOS could be tought as well.

Gidian
December 10th, 2007, 11:56 AM
The forest consists of several single pieces and I just quickly put them together this morning for the photo. At the moment, I have:

- 6 trees on 3 tiles each
- 2 bigger trees on 4 tiles each
- 2 pieces of forest spoil (correct words?) with 7 tiles
- 1 piece of forest spoil with 3 tiles
- 4 pieces of forest spoil with 1 tile

That gives you enough possibilities to build a forest with more oder less LOS. But I wanted to have some terrain that is not ruled by armies with ranged attacks and thatīs why I like the trees with their big rocks which block the LOS.

I will take some better photos the next days when I have all my terrain back.

Thanks. In the last weeks - or letīs say month`- I had no time to build custom terrain and not much ideas. Everything I wanted to build would have took me days and so I didnīt build anything.
But together with the trees, I bought some cheap aegyptian statues and I want to build some desert terrain with them next. Nothing special, just some pillars, statues and maybe the ruins of a small temple or something like that.

First of all: Thanks to lifekicker for his tutorial on the Marro-terrain. Giving the terrain-pieces its structure wasnīt the problem but I was allways thinking on how to build that stuff without spending hundreds of Euros for Greenstuff or Miliput. Because I didnīt know Apoxie Sculpt, I wanted to build it with Fimo, but polysterene or foam donīt stand the heat, Fimo needs to harden. The tip with the aluminum foil was great. That was everything I needed to start with my Marro-terrain.

So here are the first pieces of the "cursed land" - more will follow:

Hi Gideon.

I took the time to translate your Lava tutorial into english, but I was wondering what color and kind of paints you used to get that "glowing" look. What were they, exactly? I couldn't find it on your site.

P.S.--That castle with the lava flowing out of it...man. That looks like something out of a movie. I am honestly floored by that. Just....wow.

Gidian
February 4th, 2008, 08:58 AM
Hi Fezzikthedoor,

the paint I used for the lava tiles is nothing special. Itīs just normal paint you usally use for painting walls (indoor). The glowing effekt comes from the combination of light colours (yellow) and darker ones up to black. The only thing that is a bit tricky: you need a very soft color gradient (right word?) from yellow to orange to red. To reach this, I painted the tiles with much more paint than usal and mixed yellow and red directly on the tiles while they are still wet.

When the paint job was done, I covered the whole surface with clear coat (or clear varnish?). That might increase the glowing effekt a little bit, but most of it comes from the painting.

Itīs even hard to explain that in German - in English it gets even harder. ;)

Ha! Yes, the thing I noticed about the tutorial was the importance of painting them while they were still wet to lightly mix the colors...and I do remember you writing that the varnish would give it a bit of shine.

Thanks for the information. When I get home in a couple weeks the lava is on my list of things to try.

Oh, and your wording was just fine. Heckuva lot better than my German! :)

I hadn't seen your stuff before and have to agree it looks awesome! Love the lava tiles too, but really think the stone pillars are fantastic. WotC should take note because they are a good example of what I believe they should do with terrain. Their repaint of glaciers is neat but these are better.

Wow, the new pics left you speechless. ;)

Some days (or weeks) ago, I showed you some WIP pics of my graveyard. Well, I finished it, but Iīm not quite happy with the entire look. Imho I build the crypt to big because I wanted some figures being able to stand on the top.
The tiles I used for the graveyard I could only paint - not cover them with sand and/or moss. I wanted to keep the flexibility to put the graves everywhere onto the graveyard-tils and thatīs why the need to have a very flat surface.
All in all, I think itīs not bad but I wouldnīt build it again that way.

That is truely amazing! I can't imagine how much time that must take.

To be honest, it didnīt take that much time. The walls are made from Hirstarts blocks and just painted. All in all they took me about an hour (without the time, the colours needed to dry).
The graves and tombstones took me a little bit longer but just because I made some silicon molds of them and casted them afterwards with resin.
Painting the tiles is pretty easy: Just paint the top (the green, grey or beige parts) brown, paint some black wash over it and then drybrusch the tiles with dark green. Thatīs it.
Even the crypt just took me a few hours. All in all maybe 4 or 5.
The hardest thing to do was the tree. It was made of tin foil covered by fimo. The details (skulls and mushrooms) where made with milliput.

youe yutorials are in GERMAN, I can't read them.

Do you mean the tutorials on my homepage? Well, itīs mainly a German site and unfortunately my English is not good enough to translate all the tutorials into English. Terrain contest #13 has come to an end (congrats again to Lonewolf), so now I can show you my new jungle also in this thread.

Just a few notes: this jungle was meant for playing. I wanted enough terrain to build a whole jungle map with it. That means really a whole map. No other terrain types around it. So the ground is completely covered with a self-mixed forrest soil. In the beginning I planed to build more trees, more palm trees, more bushes, more Maya stuff and so on. But I had to find a good balance between playable terrain and jungle atmosphere so I reduced the amount of obstacles and build a lot of "naked" forrest soil tiles. That means less atmosphere, but unfortunately otherwise playing on the map would be no fun.

I think, you allready know the pics from the contest, so I show you some others. Even more pics (around 50) can be found here: Jungle (http://www.gidian-gelaende.de/Material_HP/Heroscape/Karten/new_jungle/album/)

Are you kidding me? I was just drooling over your lava tutorial again recently. I like the flocking you did, too.

I second what yagyuninja said. I love your terrain and your tutorials. I am one who actually painted and flocked my terrain like yours. I also created my lava by following your tutorial. I love your stuff and I hope you keep it coming.

Gidian,

Do those base tile you made sit on top of a tile that is next to stacked tiles?

I have said it before, but it's worth saying again your work is BRILLIANT!

Cheers

Unfortunately you can just put those custom tiles on top of the original ones - not next to them. Otherwise they would need a completely different structure at the edges.

He does have a tutorial on his site gidian-gelaende.de (http://gidian-gelaende.de/03c19899c41346c08/03c19899c908e0302/03c19899c908e1e04.php) it is in German but the pictures are quite descriptive :). And if you use Google Chrome as a browser it will translate it for you also.

Hi Gidian, I hope you are still around the site. I just found this thread. I think your work is awesome! I have a couple questions. I really like your dungeon wall pieces. What are they made out of? What are the bases for the dungeon wall pieces made from?

He actually moulds & casts them. I hate him for his brilliance. :p

I wish I had the time confidence & money to get as good.

He molds the bases? After looking at his website I realized that the dungeon walls were probably made from insulation foam.

I wonder if he would sell us all some bases.

The original he makes from insulation foam or plaster then he creates a mould from that so he can reproduce it, quickly & efficiently. Somewhere in these posts you will find where I asked the same question & that's what he said.

How are you making your bases for your walls. In the pic it looks like mabye balsa wood you cut down but then again it looks like it might just be molded. Could you give a detailed explination to teach me how to do them?

Oh, I haven't been around here for a while (a few month), so it's just a coincidence that I read your posts.

A3n is right, the walls are made from plaster. I built a master from insolation foam and made a silicone mold to reproduce it. That applies for the bases as well. They are made from a thin insolation foam under which I glued a few pieces of balsa wood as the frame (edge? rim?) so that they don't move around on the board. ;)
