View Full Version : General with the Best Units.

Not favorite. Not most, or widest variety. Not most powerful.

But, what general has point for point the best units overall. That is, when you consider the entire range and totallity of the units under a particular generals command if you were to form an army of his units to fight a simular sized opponent generals army who would regularly win when factoring out things such as: player skill, luck, etc.

This could be how they interact with other units, or stand on their own.

My personal choice would be: Vydar. Followed up by Utgar, then Ullar, Jandar, and finally Einar.

Why? Point for point I think the Microcorps and Krav Maga are the most undercosted units in the game. Then you throw in the Gladiatrons and you have an army with great range and melee abilities. Then of course Utgar and Ullarhave so much that works well together. Jandar is good, but I always feel he emphasizes defense over offense. And Einar is probably the opposite. Sure you have the Samurai, but they can be handled from range.

I say Einar. I'm an agressive player, and Einars agressive play suits me. The only "problem" with Eniar is the lack of a "Big" unit, but swarming Romans are very much deadly.

I like Ullar mostly because his units are the most versitile in my eyes, plus he has two power houses Charos and Jotun.

Im gonna differ oppinion and go with Jandar.

Start with Drake, Ralien, Nilfeim for heros
then factor in squads AE , 4th Mass, and Sentinals

Definately Vydar. Followed by Jandar.

I say Ullar because all of the units fit me best, but I sometimes dont like their lack of def, Morsbane, Syvarris, etc.

Vydar
Ullar
Utgar/Jandar (they're tied for 3rd)
Einar

The top four are fairly closely matched, but Einar is far behind and needs some major help.

Lets hope we see that in Thora's Vengence.

I know Krav and Micro units are nasty, but they can be neutralized fairly easy if bonding mechanics are used effectively.

Thats why I like Utgar. A few orcs, swog riders, and drones can close on them quickly with numbers. In the end, it all comes to the numbers of dice being rolled.

Utgar units can roll lots of dice.

I think Ullar is the "best" and here's why:

Ullars units are definately the most extreme. Out of the six base stat categories (life, move, range, attack, defence and points) Ullar has the top spot on 5 of them:

he has the most extreme life with charos -9
he has the most extreme move with the venoc vipers enhanced by their warlord - 7 to 9
he has the most extreme range with dan and savarris -10 and 9
he has the most extreme attack with Jotun -8
hes has the most extreme points with jotun - 225

The only category he is lacking in is the most extreme defense because of Deathwalker 9000. And we all know how effective those nine dice are with only one life behind it.

Anyway my vote is for Ullar.

Utgar has bonding out the anus which is good for crowd control. Plus you have the best buy in the game. Statistically speaking sudema is the only person who has a good chance of beating krug one on one, so for 120 points you're set.

The best buy in the game is the Krav for 100. I'll give you Krug every single game if I can have the KM

Not to mention that I would rip into Krug with either Dund or Me-Burq-Sa.

Each character has the ability to take out anyone in the entire game. That's the beauty of Heroscape.

Jotun is a beast that attacks for 8, but there's a strategy to take him out with anyone in the entire game.

This is why if you know what you're doing you can draft a crappy army and beat a pretty decent army.

Me Burq Sa vs Krug..?

I assume you would use MBS' swift move to run around a Krug, slowly shooting him and staying out of his swing?
Otherwise, his paralyzing stare is only for small or medium figures.
By the way, anybody got thoughts on "small figures"?

Maybe some little fairys or floating robot time bombs?

I always wondered about the mechanics of bonding. Now I have more information than I really ever wanted.

Ullar fo' sure:

Pull Syvarris back, give him height, and he's unstoppable.

Dan has a 1 out of 2 chance of instantly destroying any squad member from up to ten sweet spaces away.

I once had nine venoc vipers with V Warlord's move +2 charm, on road. Up to 14 move, and if frenzy is acheived, that's twenty-four move and can attack twice.

Like prevoiusly stated, Charos and Jotun eat children.

Here's where the others are (according to me)
Utgar
Vydar and Jandar tie
Einar needs help

Utgar, hands down! All hands should be hands down on the ground before Utgar, lord of all. If Victory is writin in blood, then blood of elves will do nicely to stain the pages of history.

1. Vydar- o.k. bonding, awesome range, and Q9, cheap Units (100 pts)
2. Ullar- Frenzy, Range, and Big time elf bonding
3. Utgar- Versatility, cheap units, bonding out the "anus"
4. Jandar- Defense, Too expensive
5. Einar- Lack of range, expensive, samurai do kick tail, counterstrike
6. Aquila- Lack of units, nothing of note

I agree. And even though Jandar does favor defense over offense that is a very powerful trait to favor in my eyes, if you can outlast the enemy you will eventually kill him. Besides, having even 1 extra defense die can change the outcome of many small battles in one game ultimately affecting the outcome of the war itself.

Since this thread was ressurrected, it would be interesting to see whether people's opinions have changed over the years. "Point for point" I guess I'd have to go with Vydar on the basis of the big guns like Q9, KMA, Braxas, etc. But I can't see how you can really make such a judgment without accounting for a variety of maps - Vydar would have been pretty weak in the game I played yesterday on Highways and Dieways. So I'd have to give the overall award to Utgar - his units may not be quite as good as Vydar's and maybe even Jandar's, but he's got an answer to any tactical situation and any opponent.

I'm gonna go with Vydar. He has the most modern units. My brain just won't let me accept that a bunch of muskateers, archers and sword swingers would have a remote chance in hell of defeating even one giant laser/machinegun/missle-toting robot (or a single agent armed with an automatic weapon, for that matter)...all stats aside...

Still sticking with Vydar. Followed by Ullar and his Elves. I think the point value of an Elf "Turtle" is pretty impressive. Then its a toss-up between Jandar and Einar, with the nod to Jandar if I HAD to choose. Next is Utgar.

Sure Utgar has great variety and I have gained a new found respect for the Minions. However, he has some of the games most unimpressive units, IMHO. Examples of these poor units include Khosumet, Deathstalkers, Marro Hounds, and Taelord who costs to much, just to name a few. These units simply skew his point for point value too much.

The Marro Hounds are awesome. Everytime I play them they kill over their point value and that's only with one squad. I've read a few tournament winner armies that included Taelord. Khosumet just became better now that the Wolves are out. As for the deathstalkers, I havn't played them yet. You must also keep in mind that not all units have to be tournament worthy as some are simply fun to play. Included in that list is Sudema (Vydar), who happens to be fun to play but pretty weak right now until she gets a bonding squad.

My vote is Einar. They now have big units, Kato can move Samurai, and the units seem to work well with eachother. They just need some lizards with berserker charge so Valguard is a little more useful.

I have a new respect for the Marro Hounds. Half my army was taken out with one squad of marro hounds. Those things are dangerous. I'm glad I only own one squad (so my friends can't get tuns of them).
