Where did that pic spring from? It looks to me to be actual product, not a mock-up or prototype.

I have NEVER seen a company release prototype pictures showing the insides of a box, including the inserts - for this to exist suggests that production has started and this is one of the first pulled off the production line.

That picture is awesome....I think it's got to be some sort of official photo or test shot or something, because I can think of few regular gamer-type folks who would be so cruel as to have the product in hand and not photograph the rules and cards for their fellow dorks. That would be the closest a Heroscape Fan could come to pure sadism, wouldn't it?

I hope he answers.....that photo is a real mystery. It's not like you can't post game info on BGG...it's not a site that Hasbro controls....if he has the box he could post scans of cards or at least type out the stats. It really leads me to beleive he doesn't have the product in hand.

I'm just shocked at how amazingly thin that box has to be. There's nothing underneath the 2 hex tiles is there? Pick up a 2 hexer and lay it on its side. Imagine how thin that box is now....

Possibly, but I wonder if the glyph title text is simply obscured on the two edges we can't see.

As for box thickness, it does look like the box is just slightly thicker than a two hex tile's width, but there may be something under those tiles we can't see from this angle.

I sure hope they aren't charging more than $24 now. It doesn't seem like a great value for scapers who already have a master set.

That's when the Silver Surfer hits the silver screen. Really it's just wishful thinking but it wouldn't be a dumb idea to release this between two supers blockbusters.

$24 is more than fair, probably even $30 is reasonable (though pushing it). Think of it this way, two packs of 5 Heroes in the normal game (without paying for Marvel Characters) costs us $20-$26. Considering we also get dice, glyphs, and terrain, $24 dollars is crazy cheap.

Yeah, good point Eclipse. Still, I'm feeling whiny today. I think FotA spoiled me because that was so jam packed full of goodness. In regard to buying multiples of these just to get the terrain, it's not looking as sweet as I hoped. Additionally, unlike RotV, having multiples of these figs isn't that great for customs. You can paint the Hulk orange but it still looks an awful lot like the Hulk. I guess what I'm saying is that these heroes are so... Iconic? These are minor points though, so I'll shut the heck up :binky:

As far as purchasing multiples goes, I'm guessing that you could on sell the figures on eBay with relative ease, given the popularity of the characters.

You probably won't be selling to other 'Scapers, but rather Marvel collectors in general. The sculpts do look really cool.

I was excited about finally getting my HLD and wave 6 recently, but I have to admit, I'm REALLY looking forward to this. Hope it's not going to be a disappointment after all this time...

I can't help but notice Silver Surfer's board is part of his hit zone. I'm not familiar with SS and his abilities. Is his board an extension of his self in the comics? If not, maybe the makers just did that for ease of use for new scapers.

I would guess that none of those cards are finished products, as I don't see any of the little green dots on there to mark where their LOS is measured from.

I think there will be a good solid amount of customizing. I'm planning on buying just one set for now, but I may by a few more later.....I'm waiting to see how expansions will be sold. If expansions are sold in large boxes with terrain and more ruins, I won't feel the need to stock up on this first set.

As for customization....Black Suit Spider-Man, Grey Hulk, USAgent, War Machine, Doom-bots, Carnage, etc etc. Lots of figures could be made that would be fun but aren't really popular enough to warrant official sculpts down the line unless this game REALLY takes off ala Heroclix.

One of the main things I have noticed since the announcement of this game, and with every new pic is that why couldn't Wizkids have been doing this kind of quality?
I was a rabid Heroclix player up until last year. (Now trying to catch up with Heroscape  )
I gave up Heroclix for a couple of reasons. The three biggest were:

1- Quality control. It was AWFUL!

2- Special rules, errata, FAQ's were getting out of hand.

3- Alot of the figs to me were just plain UGLY!

Now along comes MarvelScape. The figs look AWESOME, and if the rules play as smooth as Heroscape, I will be in love.
I cannot wait until July!

Take care! :)

One thing I don't envy the designers, though, is how to make every character desirable. I mean I know that everyone's got their favorite units in Heroscape, but doesn't everybody generally try out everyone at least once and discover some new strategies, or combinations, or gain some understanding about a unit they didn't have before? What's going to entice someone to try out Elektra, or the Wrecking Crew, or the Lizard, or Wasp? I think that Hasbro's going to have a tough time if this game DOES become popular, because I think there's going to be even more Nikita packs out there... expansions that no one's going to be interested in.

riledguy
May 25th, 2007, 12:49 AM
Looking at the pack in photo and the set up photo there is appallingly little terrain.

I can live with having way less figures but seems like there is about half the hexes in the master set. I am guessing the book is going to have many fewer maps.

It would be a mistake for them to sell this under the assumption that the majority buying it already own heroscape.

This big a license should be used to hook new players. This anemic starter set seems a disappointing way to do it.

I will scratch all my comments if they start selling the terrain in its own sets for a reasonable price.

Shelf space is valuable and I know they don't want to have to deal with as big a foot print as they had to with the original master set but at the same time the modular board is a massive part of the appeal.

Come on hasbro... don't skimp on the Marvel Terrain...

Tiberius
May 25th, 2007, 07:44 AM
The reason for the little terrain is how much do you need for a one on one fight, superhero vs supervillain, which is what I assume marvel scape is designed for. You want it fast and furious like most comic book fights or superhero RPGs.

Talos
May 25th, 2007, 07:55 AM
I was a little perplexed about the small amount of terrain, but from what I understand the price is lower than the RotV master set, right?

Perhaps they may be thinking of larger expansion packs with more than the couple of tiles we have come to expect with HS Classic.

That conjures up some wild ideas... The FF with the Baxter Building street frontage. The X-Men and part of the grounds of "Xavier's school for gifted Youngsters"

I think the set may be geared at playing with less than the total number of characters included as well, making it more man to man combat than squad based.

Come what may, I'll be grabbing this for our collection, The sculpts are really excellent and they have picked so many of my fave Marvel characters.

Oh and if we are daydreaming of new group expansions, how about ROM, Starshine, and the legion of the Spaceknights? I bet they could come up with some wicked Dire Wraith sculpts, and special abilities.

Excelsior!

In the comics I read the battle ground is still usually bigger then the corner of an alley.

My issue is that things like flight will not be as big a deal because there is less terrain height discrepancy which admittedly is the case in a city.

Still I want a bit more so that opponents are starting more then then 8 hexes away from each other.

Another reason for the small amount of terrain could be the price of oil.

I think that could easily be dealt with by spreading out the major players nad filling in with notable secondary characters. By the time they get to tertiary characters and beyond this game will have several expansions under its belt and will likely have run its course. There's a lot that can be done with Marvel's major players.

Some suggestions for expansion themes, mixing first-tier characters with notable supporting villains and heroes:

Fantastic Four: Mister Fantastic, Human Torch, Invisible Woman, and Thing are basically no-brainers for quick inclusion in this game. Follow that up with Super Skrull (perhaps with a Skrull Warrior unique squad?), Namor, Galactus (the game's first huge figure?), Annihilus, Doombots, Moleman (and his Animen followers?), or She-Hulk. Any combo of those figures could make for excellent pack-ins to the core team members...I'd suggest splitting the team at least in half to get decent sales.

Marvel Knights: Daredevil, Elektra, Ghost Rider, and Punisher have all had their own movies and are pretty well known by the public at large. Ship them with Doctor Strange (also a well known player), Bullseye, Kingpin, Blackheart (known from his movie appearance and upcoming DVD release), Iron Fist, Moon Knight, Power Man (aka Luke Cage), Man-Thing, or Mephisto....these "darker" characters could fit together in some fun boosters. In a pinch, they could add the ever-popular Blade, perhaps with an enemy squad of Vampires or even Morbius.

Spider-Man: The Sandman, Doctor Octopus, and Green Goblin all had roles in one of the biggest film franchises of our time. If it's not a done deal to include them I don't know what is. Toss in Spidey's other memorable villains like Rhino, Electro, The Lizard, Kraven the Hunter, Carnage, Mysterio, Shocker, and Vulture and you've got a great line up for expansions....perhaps Spidey's friends and foes could be rolled in with the Marvel Knights characters? Black Cat, Cloak & Dagger, and Spider-Woman (obtaining a lot more popularity lately due to her role in Ultimate Alliance and the New Avengers comic series) could give Spidey some allies to take out all those baddies.

X-Men: A biggie, for sure. Tons of characters to choose from for the good guys and the bad guys. Best place to start is with that crazy Canuck Wolverine. Can't have Wolvie without Sabretooth to fight him. Add in Colossus, Beast, Angel, Cyclops, Iceman, Marvel Girl (aka Jean Grey), Professor X, Nightcrawler, and Storm and you've got the front liners. Magneto, Mystique, Juggernaut, and a couple of Sentinels could make for good opposition. Lesser known (to the non-comic reading public) but still recognizable and fun characters like Multiple Man, Pyro, Bishop, Cable, Deadpool, Gambit, Rogue, Apocalypse, Mister Sinister, Emma Frost, Blob, Mastermind, Banshee, Havoc, Forge, Jubilee, Silver Samurai, and the Morlocks (a squad?) could round out the mutant ranks.

Avengers/Ultimates: This could also serve as the dumping ground for unaffiliated characters. We'll start with Thor, Hawkeye, Black Widow, Nick Fury, and some SHIELD Agents. Toss in Wasp, Vision, Scarlett Witch, Quicksilver, Black Panther. Ant-Man, Giant Man, War Machine, and perhaps Captain Britain. For the bad guys, let's try Kang, Loki, Absorbing Man, Klaw, Leader, Mandarin (soon to star in a major motion picture), Ultron, and maybe Omega Red. Heck, I bet ninthdoc would be overjoyed if Taskmaster was dropped in there, eh?

I think broad categories like that will be what keeps the expansions going. Expansions can't be too mismatched I think....packing Wolverine with Daredevil, Loki, and Nick Fury is not the way to go, but neither is blowing the load by including Wolverine, Storm, Cyclops, and all the other popular X-men in one shot. Likewise putting all four FF members in one expansion might be awesome, but might not be the best business move unless the game is expanded with only a handful of large box sets and doesn't have to worry about selling lots of boosters. Take Invisible Woman and put her with the Human Torch, then stick Mister Fantastic with Thing....fill in each pack with supporting characters like She-Hulk, Namor, Annihilus, etc. They need to take the front runners of each major area of the Marvel U, spread them out over several packs, and fill in with secondary characters that are important enough that nobody feels like they're getting a chump or has to go "who the heck are these guys" with any degree of regularity. Hardcore fans will still get characters they love, while casual fans won't feel like they need to go read up.

Providing brief bios on the packaging might also sell more packs.....if a kid doesn't recognize some character, he can read the back of the card and see how awesome Blade is and then perhaps want to use him in his own games.

I think they should go with this route packing wise - One major player, who EVERYONE knows about. two people that are somewhat second stringers, that people who've seen movies and watched cartoons notice, and a "nobody", someone who no one outside of comic geeks really know.

For example, they can go with a Wolverine themed pack. Wolverine is the big guy, Sabretooth and X-23 would be good second string, additional draws, and maybe the Silver Samurai could go in too. A nice, thematic pack that I don't think anyone would object to, and is good for mainstream kids, along with purist comic fans. I sincerely hope that's where they go with this; I don't really see any other good way to appease everyone.

It's better if the "nobody" looks cool, like your example Silver Samurai.

See I think that X-23 and Silver Samurai are getting a little too far down the popularity chain. I really don't think the game should include "nobodies" that only comic fans would know. Silver Samurai is stretching things (even though he has been around for a while and has appeared in cartoons and maybe a video game), and X-23 certainly hasn't done anything notable in the entertainment world outside of her comics. I doubt most folks would even be able to pick her out of a lineup unless they were real comic fans. Plus she doesn't have the history to be considered a real icon....I'm thinking a character needs to have paid their dues for 10-20 years to make it into this game...and onto the public's radar.

For the pack you are describing, I'd go with Wolverine, Sabretooth, Silver Samurai (as our extremely minor character), and perhaps Deadpool and Gambit. Deadpool and Gambit have both paid their dues for a while in comics, video games, cartoons, and toys, both have made the crossover to the popular Ultimate Marvel U, and both have carried their own titles for various lengths of time. I think they are big enough to be considered notable secondary characters, while certainly not being true icons like Wolverine. Sabretooth is very well known now because of his close ties to Wolverine in many types of video game, cartoon, comic, and movie. I'm almost hesitant to not include one more first-run character in there though. Perhaps taking out Silver Samurai or Gambit and replacing him with Nightcrawler, who's not quite first-run but is certainly more well known than either of those and has always been rather popular.

In the master set, I feel that we only get one true "who dat?" sort of character....Thanos. Thanos is well known to comics fans and has made minor appearances in a couple of video games if I recall correctly, but he's still off the public's "comic radar" having never been the sort to appear in cartoons, movies, or have his face pasted on lunchboxes and t-shirts in Wal-Mart. He's worth including as a minor character though, and it's nice that the Master Set keeps the characters fairly first-string I think.

Since the focus of this thread seems to have shifted a bit I'll offer my :2cents: I foresee the major problem of Marvelscape to be in the timely release and even scarier reliance on our local retailers to stock NEW FREAKIN' PACKS.

I got to the point where I would go into Walmart, Target, and Kmart and say if the only thing on the shelf is Nikitas and Gladiators I'm picking it up and throwing it down the aisle. (and I did one time, sorry Kmart, Blue Light Special on Knowing your customers, talk to Hasbro and learn how to stock if you want to carry a product!)

Point being, I'm spending my wife's hard-earned bonus checks on my fanatical hobby (I have a job but hers is better  ) on this stuff and I AM VERY IMPATIENT!!! I'm only going to be buying one of each pack since it's going to be pretty much all unique figures. Hasbro better teach their distributors how to rotate this stuff out to make sure that if I'm the only person in my area buying HS or MS that once I buy a pack they need to gimme something different!

My issue is that things like flight will not be as big a deal because there is less terrain height discrepancy which admittedly is the case in a city.
Speaking of flight, I found it peculiar that the description for the Flying special power mentions "fly over water without stopping". If someone plays this without ever having seen the Classic Heroscape rules they are going to be confused and wonder why the card talks about water since the Marvel master set has no water.

Cool picture, I can't imagine the Hasbro people are too happy about this though.
Hopefully this Craig Malmloff guy on BGG (apparently he's a toy inventor/designer) got permission from someone at Hasbro to post it, otherwise he may not be getting anymore advanced copies of stuff.

I betcha it's in the Marvel Rulebook even though they aren't in the terrain. That way, if they want to put out THE SAVAGE LAND terrain pack, the rules are already there.

JCB - I am ALL OVER that Marvel Knights expansion set. I've already played proxies and having a demonic spirit of vengeance in Valhalla has fit pretty well. How can I demonstrate my desire to buy hundreds of copies of that expansion to Hasbro central?

I'm expecting it to be in the rulebook as well. But that means it will be making some references to the Classic Heroscape master set in order to explain terrain that is not yet part of the Marvel Heroscape universe.

Very true. Part of me doubts that Marvelscape will come out with water, but the possiblity is there. I tend to read this line more as an endorsement of mixing classic with Marvel though.

Off the top of my head, I can think of three "flash forwards" in the Classic Heroscape line.....Grimnak (Master Set) referred to Orc Warriors, which did not come out until Wave 1, a few months later....Su-Bak-Na (Wave 2.5) referred to Wulsinu, which did not come out until Wave 3, three or four months later......and Einar's flagbearer (Crest of the Valkyrie, between Waves 5 and 6) referred to Ashigaru, which will not release until Wave 7, a whopping 8-9 months or so after his release.
