Sword in the Stone...

I know that the cemetary has been done to death  But I think it is an awesome unofficial expansion so I thought that I would give making my own a try. Credit must be given to other scapers for visual ideas on making the graves and Raelin statue. Each grave is attached to an individual hex, so the graveyard can be rearranged. Sorry the pics aren't better.

Notice the sword in the stone at the statues base.
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10361/normal_graveclose3.jpg
This was a 'Canyon of the Dead' that lead up to the cemetary. Pictures truly do not do this map justice.
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10361/normal_zombiecanyon3.jpg
On the opposite side of the castle from the graveyard is a ruined temple. The pillars are made using Grishnak's tutorial.
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10361/normal_temple3.jpg
Here's a close up.
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10361/normal_templeclose3.jpg
I will post more photos later in the same thread.
In case anyone is interested, these photos are all from the same map and there is a detailed scenario that goes with it, involving the graveyard, sword in stone and the temple and wellspring and custom artifact glyphs. The map as a whole was not photogenic. More to come...
Added on 5/20/07: Mimring repaint.
So, I am aware that there have been at least 99 Mimring repaint's already--but here's my version anyway. More custom terrain is coming soon!
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10361/normal_mimringdoor6.jpg
I was going for a look like Smaug in 'The Hobbit' (red/gold paint scheme). Maybe I will make a card and give him Mindshackle and or an ability granting range invulnerablity like the KMA, to make figure more Smaug-esque.

Hey everybody! Thanks for all the good words. As promised here are more pics.

Here's a couple of close shots of the Sword in the Stone. FYI it pulls out of the stone and there is a custom glyph and card that go with it. I have been playtesting the d20 roll to pull it out. I was thinking 18+, unless your character has a Valiant personality which in case you would need to roll 14+.
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10361/normal_swordclose5.jpg
I made a special rule for the castle door in this game that it cannot be destroyed. The only way to open it is to 'speak the password' (d20 roll). 18+, unless you are a Wizard in which you need to roll 14+. Only problem with that is there are only two wizards, so in future games I will probably change that rule to Tricky personality +14.

That's awesome! I don't think the graveyard has been overdone. I want Hasbro to make us one. I love the walls, and the modular effect with the individual gravestones. The statue is great, and the little sword-in-stone is seriously cool.
Make more stuff! Heck, make another graveyard set, I'll swap you a dice tower for it.

Thanks Imax, I will definetely consider that offer. And I agree that Hasbro should make a graveyard expansion. Usually I am really anal about customs on my map, they have to feel official. That is the reason I chose the order markers for graves.

The Graveyard is awesome...simple and useful and realistic. I have seen several other graveyards made for HS and other fantasy role-playing game and the majority have 1 major flaw.....crosses.....now I know that crosses are not necessairly ONLY a symbol of Christianity, you would believe some other symbol to be in place in a Valhallian graveyard

Yeah, Epic, that's exactly what I was going for with this map and scenario.
The idea with the sword in the stone is that, much like the quest for the Grail, one must be true of heart to wield it. So, I thought lets make it where a Valiant personality has a better chance. Same thing for the Magic password and the Wizard bonus.
Also this kept a basis for the themed armies I was going for on this map (elves/knights vs. orcs/undead). Somehow it is strange to picture DW9k wielding the Master Sword. [/i]
Thanks Necroblade.

Wouldn't Valhallans burn their dead instead of bury them? Maybe the Valhallan graveyards are for the fallen warriors of other planets and customs that bury their dead. Just wondering...

You know Lil Newb... You're absolutely right about that! But for the sake of having a graveyard expansion I'm going to pretend like it's customs and heroes from Earth and the like. Thanks for pointing that out.
I may have to consider a 'pyre' custom, but that could be potentially hazardous. I am picturing Agent Carr permamelted into a grass hex and it ain't pretty

Actually, I don't really think there are any dead in Valhalla. The warriors gathered by the gods go out and fight and die and then come back to life every day. It's the people who don't get gathered up that get buried or burned. They don't end up in Valhalla, but in the underworld. Of course, Heroscape Valhalla is pretty much an anything goes kind of place so do as you like, I say, as long as it looks as cool as this.

If I may post my own veiw on this, Valhalla is not some angelic hevenly place. It's another world with mortal beings (who look like angles coincidentaly). However, becuse of the Wellsprings, the death rate slowed signifigantly (Though the wars sped it back up again). But in any rate, there should be dead people.
As for the dispute between Graves VS. Cremation, I'd guess it would be a choice, much like they have on Earth. However, I'd take a wild guess and say that Cremation would be more populer amungst some races on the planet with Religious/Tribal Rituals/Spells.
Also, I simply ADORE the grave site and everything else! And there should be more things that deal with Personality. Why have it if it's never used?

The D&D Desert Of Desolation figure - Animated Statue would probably fit in that role well. He's already painted correctly as well. I bought mine as a large statue for use with 1/72 scale fantasy, but he could just as well be a smaller statue for Heroscape.

IMO I think Cremation would probably be the most popular, seeing how the Kryie have wings and can fly, and they do seem to have Religious/Tribal Rituals/Magic beliefs, they might believe in a Afterlife, and if so, would release the 'soul' in to the air, not confine it underground.
Of course, I believe the Valkryie (exept Utgar) would respect the beliefs of the people they summon, and lay them to rest in their own fashions
of course this is my opinion.

I take a hex and cover it in apoxy, then I used a rough textured rock and press it all over to get the earth texture...After I place the 'statue' bit in place, I tap the rock all around the edges to get that 'encased in dirt' look...I would be happy to do a TUT if enough people are interested....

It has been two weeks and I was certain that someone would make a comment about this piece....
The figure is a DnD mini mod with a wooden craft store bowl glued down....and then of course I textured, painted and dry-brushed it...I had to glue his wings down on his shoulders and sand the top flat...
But the theme is from an historical restored Visigothic chapel in France near the Pyrennees.....
My piece itself is supposed to represent a duality of good and evil....A balance of the dark and light in principle....Is it not odd to see a demon holding the basin in a cathedral otherwise styled as a christian structure....Historically the demon in the actual church was Asmodeus..In Caballistic lore he helped Solomon build his temple and is representative as a guardian of secrets....
I will give ten points to the first who can tell me the name of the church or the place its located in France....

This pillar was constructed from a clear wedding cake pillar and the same DnD fig from above...
Attn all Custom Scapers...The type of wedding cake pillar you see in the pic...The opening is the exact size as the DnD mini base....making high statue pillars just got very easy...The base fits perfect in the top...I didnt even glue mine so I can swap it out...
Edit: Ormus cant believe that no one knew the answer to his riddle...

No...Technically I am writing 2 RPG's right now...One is called HogwartsQuest...the other is DreamQuest
The waterfall, ruined church, and goddess statues I have recently posted are for the latter game, as there as no such thing in the Potter world...
DreamQuest is a thoughtpiece game based mostly on the Grail Romances of the Darkages mixed with nightmarish Lovecraftian themes....

Hey i was wondering, how do you paint your grave stones and other things similar to them? Earlier you said that you use a rock for some texturing but is that what you used on the graveyard stuff?
The texture you see on the gravestones is a stone texture spray paint..you can find it at walmart....The same spray I used on the ruined chapel from pg.5 to differentiate the look from the official ruins it was made from...
I put on several light coats of the stone texture and then I spray paint the whole piece black, then 4 layers of drybrush.....
The rock you referred to is used to texture the sculpy apoxy around the grave base to give it an earthy look....also same technique for the creeping moss you see on most of my customs....
Heres a pic of the one I use
http://image.orientaltrading.com/otcimg/73_53842.jpg
If you are going to use this product, I can't stress enough: Do several LIGHT coats and shake the can real well...This stuff is real thick and will clump up and obscure all your details....
I hope that is a concise answer....

Waterfall Tutorial....
All right custom scapers....By the very nature of the products used in creating my water effects(5 min epoxy) it was not possible for me to take pics along the way...You have to work very fast....I have visually recreated the process as best as possible...so if there are any questions please don't hesitate....also bear in mind this TUT is only in reference to the waterfall and pool itself...all the rocks and moss were made using sculpy apoxy from Aves studio....
This is what we're talking about for anyone who missed it...
http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff168/ormus_ara/103_1759.jpg
These are ALL the materials used for making the Water effects.....
Fishing line, brush-on superglue, aqua ink, 5 min epoxy, Envirotex lite...
http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff168/ormus_ara/100_1937.jpg
Yes!...fishing line...alot of it!...about 150 to 200 strands...
http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff168/ormus_ara/100_1933.jpg
Originally my plan was to break up the fall into different downpours..maybe bounce it off some rocks...this could easily be done with some creativity, but being a speed contest I rushed it and went for just 1 down pour...Also I can't take credit for the idea of using fishing line...Bruce Hirst does the same things with small fountain spouts...I just took the same premise and amplified it x 100! So essentially with the pliability of the line you can make any kind of waterfall you want!
For comparison...
http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff168/ormus_ara/100_1934.jpg
This part is kind of tricky....You need to space out the line in your fingers to the width you want it to be...For me that meant the width of 1 hex....then carefully use the Brush-on superglue on just the top of the line to adhere it all into one piece...I then used a pair of scissors to trim it even...A could piece of advice is to cut all the pieces much longer than you are going to need them and then trim accordingly once the top is all glued together....
http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff168/ormus_ara/100_1940.jpg
Next...you need a little gap between the land hex and the water hex that will go on top so the fishing line has somewhere to glue and rest on without making the water hex askew....I used a dremel 'cause I'm lazy..but you could easily use a hobby knife or a file....
http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff168/ormus_ara/100_1943.jpg
See how just the lip of the hex has been filed down enough for the fishing line to be adhered to...Then just use some of the 5min epoxy to glue the line into place....
http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff168/ormus_ara/100_1944.jpg
Next...mix some more 5min epoxy and stir in aSMALL drop of ink with it....You can make it any color you want...Here's what I used...
http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff168/ormus_ara/100_1939.jpg
I can't stress this enough: Working very quickly!(You only have 5 min)Position the bottom of the fall however you want it to sit and with an old paint brush start to paint the now colored epoxy on the line....
http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff168/ormus_ara/100_1942.jpg
The last thing you do is pour in the envirotex to make the pool...Its clear, so again use a very small drop of ink to color it and then just follow the instruction that come with...Envirotex takes along time to set...and it needs a level, dry, and preferably warm area to setup....I tried to add ripples and such but it sets up over so long a period they just level out again....There are many other products you can use for this kind of effect though...but this one is pretty common and easy to find at craft stores...
http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff168/ormus_ara/100_1938.jpg
One last thing..the water effects above described are the last stage of this piece...if you plan on matte finishing your piece do it before do any of the above techniques.....
Wow...I hope that was concise enough...and speaking of WoW, since no one asked I'll just add..this is the fig used for the fallen goddess statue on top of the falls....
http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff168/ormus_ara/moonshadow.jpg
And after....
http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff168/ormus_ara/103_1752.jpg
Isn't she much more beautiful all objectified and ancientized;)
I hope that was concise and not confusing...any and all questions are welcome.....

http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff168/ormus_ara/100_1936.jpg
I am holding it just by the epoxy coated fishing line! And no thats not a trick i am holding it upside down...And I will tell you now that piece is one heavy sucker....in addition to all of the sculpy apoxy holding it together there is a 4in deck screw through each of the main support hex stacks...

Braid
Recently I was inspired by a fantastic game I have been playing entitled Braid to build the following piece....Anyone who has played the game will understand all the references....
For anyone that hasn't or just doesn't get it....The statue in my piece is a tribute to the titular 'Princess' of the game and of course you can see she has a braid(pretty obvious)...The lock and key were also inspired from this (and every other classic fantasy/rpg game)....
Also it is worth mentioning, for any fellow Grail lore enthusiates out there, it is a reference to the hidden Prieure documents found in a hollow pillar at the church of Rennes-Le-Cheteau in France....note the chalice symbols formed from the statues stone base and the moss itself..and of course the 'princess' statue symbolizing the goddess/grail her/itself;)
I'm going to spin her around so you can see all the hidden details...
http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff168/ormus_ara/100_1950.jpg

http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff168/ormus_ara/100_1952.jpg
Also...the piece is not just for looks..It is part of a custom game I'm working on called DreamQuest...and yes..both the lock and key have a purpose within the game..and yes..there is something hidden inside the pillar...and yes..there is a reason why the lock is silver and the key is gold....Thats right gamers, you guessed it..you need the silver key to open it and the pictured gold key opens something else(probably a gold lock);)...It would just be way to convenient if this key opened the lock two spaces away from it right?...
Comments are more than welcome!...I really wanted people to get their brains ticking on this one....

I agree with karl! I also like the one road tile among the swamp with the ruined statue; nice touch.

I have a number of progress pics for the various parts of this custom that I am in the process of uploading. I will post in this thread sometime tonight. But FYI for Shieldcrusher, it is a mod the Shleich elven oracle. I will post some pics of the conversion also...
This same piece I also used in my most recent dungeon found in my map thread... http://www.heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=15576&page=16

Thanks Glenn!
Sorry for the delay in posting these progress pics....
The original piece used for this was the Elven Oracle by Schleich...The oraculum in this case were HUGE... So I shortened them from the base to make them more in scale w/ heroscape... Also it is not easy to see in these pics but the texture of the Schleich oraculum is extremely smooth...I wanted an ancient look, so I used the stone spray paint mentioned previously in this thread to add texture to the smooth parts...I taped off the front of the piece while doing this, as to not detract from the highly detailed rune carvings...

The base of the statue piece is what I am most proud of....Over the winter I cast the base of a HS tree(refer to pics below)...The statue in question was based onto 3 of the cast tree bases...I plan to use these for all small future customs as well...Something as large and top heavy as the oraculum needed to go on standard hexes, much like the jungle terrain...
The thought was: this will save my hex consumption and also make my pieces more versatile in map placement...

Greetings Scapers,
I have been silently at work throughout the summer on several new custom projects. My goal is to release a new epic map complete w/ custom terrain in time for Gencon/D2. Hopefully this will still come to fruition. In scope I hope it is complimentary to Slamdance Cosmopolis which was my Gencon season map from '09...
Until then I wanted to announce that I have donated the following pictured custom as a prize that will be awarded in the Heat of Battle Event at Gencon...
