I'm REALLY, REALLY curious what the heck is going on here. It's quite evident that the components of the Marvel game were complete, and ready for mass production MONTHS ago. Why would they delay release for 7 MONTHS!!!! And WELL after all of the Marvel movies have come and gone???? It's absurd!

Actually,I would think the opposite. Not having the components ready makes a lot of sense to me. The stuff we saw at the cons was prototype stuff. Getting prototypes together and getting mass production together are two different things. Especially when done on opposite sides of the globe. I'm sure they would have had them on the shelves in January if it were in their power.

A friend of mine went to a con a few weeks back and talked to the heroscape guys. They told him that they made marvel heroscape without the approval of marvel. Hasbro assumed they had freedom to do anything they want with the license and was slapped down til they hash everything out with legal.

That sounds like an interesting option. Legal issues have a way of halting and bogging down the most ambitious of projects and releases.

I strongly doubt this is the case. Hasbro does license stuff all the time. They wouldn't invest the money and time into a project without having approval.

Could be licensing... cold be safety aprovals... CE rating aprovals... or just waiting for the production to finish, AND get imported, customs might delay a box or two, and thus they have to hold their product release back... and then we have to wait for all the stores to get them, which might have them for a week or two before putting them on the shelf...

I think this falls under...
Hasbro never misses an opportunity to miss an opportunity.
Millions of dollars are being spent to promote Marvel movies right now and rather than surf the free promotional wave they will release the game way too late.
Compare this with Wizkids who launched "Pirates at Ocean's End" on April 17 to coincide with the marketing push for the movie "Pirates of the Carribean: At Land's End". Pirates at Oceans' End is NOT a licensed product but the style, title, text, etc. make it look like a Pirates of the Carribean product.
Just about every other collectible game seems to be able to generate 100's of figures/cards per quarter, while Hasbro struggles to release the minimal amount to keep the product moving forward. I just don't get it.

There is a HUGE difference between these games you're referring to and Heroscape. The WizKids games suffer from power creep and just generally being crappy. Honestly, do they need to produce all those units they produce?
You're comparing WizKids games to Heroscape? Please refer to his formula:

Ah well...we are getting off course I guess. She dumped him because he spent about what, 30 to 40 bucks for two, maybe less, on her "special night" and took her to a place where folks were just wearing jeans and tank tops and all that jazz...the kinda place that they could go just about anytime....prom to her was a big night, a special night. I'm not defending her (she was a little high school byatch and I think she made too much of a public issue over it), but I do see how that could be the last straw in what must have been an already troubled relationship.....he could have taken her somewhere nicer, even if he had to go dutch on it, which he didn't...heck, not like he didn't know prom was coming all year long. We all ribbed him about it for weeks and he still went through with it so I've gotta give the man props for sticking to his guns. It's like having your wedding reception catered by Chilis or taking Grandma to Eat n' Park for her 100th birthday...not the best choice. I like Outback as much as the next guy and go there a few times a year with my family or friends, but it's not what I'd call a "nice" restaurant...it's a repectable establishment and you get what you pay for in terms of steak quality, but it's about two steps up from a Ponderosa. Heck, for not much more money (or maybe even the same price) there are more elegant dining options, even in towns dominated by chains and strip malls. Anyway, I don't want to totally hijack the thread....darn, I'm really hungry for waffles and steak now too. Mmmm...waffles and steak. I gotta call up my gaming buddies and see if they want to go to Outback this weekend....mmm....Heroscape and steak.
I agree with your original point about Wizkids....the power creep is intense and just plain wrong. I think that if I buy a unit in the first wave of a game, I should be able to play it until the game dries up to dust...I received a bunch of Star Wars minis not long ago and when I asked around to get some info on them I found that most of them were virtually unplayable due to power creep....WTF? Why can't they just adjust point values up or down when they release more powerful units? Why do they release units that are unquestionably better in every regard and then price them the same as a lesser unit? I know the answer is "to sell more games" but there's at point at which it's just plain wrong.
What's sad is that many wizkids players don't even seem to care about that. Either they have a lot of money to burn and can buy dozens (hundreds?) of boosters each wave or they've been dumped on by so many gaming companies that they don't know there's a different way to game. I've been pleasantly surprised by the lack of creep in Heroscape. I bought the Master Set thinking that the game wouldn't last past maybe one expansion wave but that it would be fun anyway, given that a whole game was playable from the initial purchase with no blinds....I never expected it to last this long. I certainly never expected units from Wave One to still be playable in a competitive game. Amazing. And it's not exactly rocket science to do that....other companies could learn a lot from this. In the long run I think it might make more money for Hasbro....Hasbro can sell it's old expansions (which have already eaten all development and testing costs) again at any time without having to readjust their stats or spend new design man-hours on them. If Hasbro tossed some Wave 3 on the shelves tomorrow, new players would suck them up (and they are, if early reports are to be believed from the rerelease).

On the subject of Waffle House...I was sitting there at the bar eating a waffle one evening, and the waitress decided right then would be a good time to wash out a bucket full of bleach water with a high pressure hose about a foot from where I was eating. Needless to say, I and my food were both covered in bleachy water. The manager laughed. No one offered to replace my food, clean up, anything. Actually, it was more like "you're still going to pay for all of that food we just ruined, aren't you?" The answer was no. We walked out, and have never been back in 5 years.
On topic...if you're on this board, and play this game, dinner for Prom should cost you more than buying a new master set at full retail, dig? For god's sakes man, it's Prom, sell your Hawthornes and give yourself a chance for crying out loud!

I agree power creep exists, but I don't think it as powerful as some think. To me the bigger culprit is mechanics creep. In the case of Heroclix the Battlefield effects cards were the deal breaker for me. No amount of planning and army building can counteract the impact of a 0 cost Battlefield Effects card. The equivalent in Heroscape would be a player being allowed to declare all spaces are lava after the armies are declared. Many battles in Heroclix are practically decided before they are fought simply by placing a Battlefield Effect card in play.
That said, Heroclix (except for the intro of the BE cards) is less random than Heroscape and (pull out the rotten eggs) more skill oriented. A good Heroclix player will beat an average Heroclix player almost every time, even when both players have identical armies. Heroclix is like chess in that manner. In contrast luck is a more of a factor in Heroscape. The better player might win 60% of the time, but 40% of the time the dice just won't roll right. Heroscape is more like baseball, a few lucky homeruns (or a bobbled grounder) and the game can be lost. That doesn't mean one game is superior... they are just different. In both games the better player will win more than he/she loses. Just don't play Heroscape and expect to have a 90% win ratio.
With regards to money... let's face it both games are pretty darn expensive. I have hundreds of dollars worth of Heroclix figures and I have hundreds of dollars of Heroscape sets. However, I do think money is more of a factor in Heroclix (you absolutely must have the better pieces to be competitive in pre-built tournaments). In Heroscape people buy because they like the variety, not because it is essential to being competitive.
This leads to the question of why aren't all units (in either game) equally useful. Simple, that is impossible to do. In games like Heroscape and Heroclix the value of a power or ability is an arbitrary assignment from the game designer. Sure you can create formulas (e.g. Flying cost 10 extra build points), but any value you assign is just a guess (maybe Flying is really more of a 15 point bonus, or with some power combination Flying is more useful). Ultimately all you can do is playtest and hope your build point assignments are close enough to create doubt in the players. If players are debating which character (or combination of characters) is better then you've hit that middle ground where creative army building and game play occurs.

And I don't know about you, but I've never bought a Master set at full retail. The first one was a gift, and the second one was on sale.
And I don't have a Hawthorne! (Waaaaay too expensive).
I don't really remember where I went for prom - as I recall both my proms were group type things (though I went to one with a girlfriend) and the girls all conspired to decide which restaurants we went to. Don't recall it being anything too ritzy though.
Anyway, I've never much been into girls that feel some need to be wined and dined. Hopefully my company is of value enough to her (and vice versa - I wouldn't expect her to plunk down 40 or 50 bucks for me just for a date either!)

But you're not comparing equal amounts of game in your cost analysis here. I've got hundreds (thousands?) of dollars worth of Heroscape figures, but that's taking into account my entire collection, including figures that I own (often multiples of) just to have everything. You're comparing this to the cost of a competetive army in Heroclix, which is only a fraction of my collection. One of the most competetive armies I know of consists of the following:
180 points - Major Q9 - Raknar's Vision - $20
080 points - 2x Deathreavers - 2x Wave 5 packs - $20
080 points - Raelin - Master Set - $40
Add in an addition 60-160 points of whatever unit you prefer, which will likely cost you $20 or less depending on what you pick and you get a grand total of $100 dollars for a truly competitive, tournament worthy army in Heroscape. I'm not particularly well versed in collectible games, but can you really field anything that competitive for that much in most other games?

Okay, I drop $100 on dinner and what do I get? I get to take a dump later. I drop $100 on Sir Hawthorne and what do I get? An investment.

Yeah, that's my first choice as well, but I didn't specify the point limit. If its a 400 point tourny you can't fit the Krav.
heck, even for a 400 point army, I'd swap a set of rats out and add in the Krav for an even 400. not to mention that most tourneys are based on 500 point armies these days, aren't they?
but, yeah, I get what you're saying :P

I have 20 master sets, 8 VWs, 21 RttFFs, 10 TT, 10 FotA, and 4-5 of all the small boosters (incl. uniques) and this doesn't change anything.
 soooooo jealous .....

Hmmm, Well I play alot of this Pirates game and I for one have alot of fun with it. As for having to spend hundreds of dollars just to keep up with the rest of the pack? I disagree. On a side note is Heroscape not like a game from Games Workshop called Warhammer? Or at the very least a nice clone. Anyone remember when Hasbro put out a game called Battle Ball? I picked up a copy at least a year back and while I opened it to see what it was, I had never took it out of its package until yesterday when a friend came over and told me about how fun it was. We pulled it out and had a great time. I went online to see if their was any news about it and from the looks of it, it was going to have some expansions but they never happened and the game can no longer be found. Well, I was looking into Games Workshop about maybe getting into Warhammer and came across a game called... Blood Bowl. Hmmm, Battle Ball and Blood Bowl. I wonder how much these have in common? Answer, while Battle Ball is simple it is Blood Bowl with a change here and a change there.
What I like about Heroscape is how easy it is to get into but at the end of the day you had best keep up with the boosters and expansions as you will be left behind IF you are to play others in any form of a tournament (just like in any other game, Pirates or likewise). Does Pirates have ships/crew that are very powerfull? Yes sir, they do. But then again, is it not how a person plays and the roll of the dice that decide how the game is won? Just like Heroscape? Heroscape has its Power figures as well and in the end I am just happy to be playing them both and being able to sit down and show new players that gaming can still be fun and it is more than just monopoly and clue fun.
P.S.
On a side note what I am very happy with Heroscape is the same thing I am happy with Pirates, the price point. While Warhammer looks fun and am wanting to get into minature painting, the cost of an army will leave many out in the cold. And with the whole Battle Ball vs Blood Bowl thing, I would had love to see many more expansions of Battle Ball but in the end, it looks like Blood Bowl is the game to get if you are into fantansy football (like the old Genesis game called Mutany League Football).

So, Outback being bad for prom... my prom group a few years back went to PF Changs... the girls all picked it...
I thought it was a rip, I knew of a chinese place down the road that I could have gotten 6 times the food on my plate for the price I paid, and you know service is never great when you have 15 people.
Man, the dude took her to a steakhouse, which is pricey. What he needs is a girl that appreciates a good piece of steak...
As for my thoughts on the thread... I love there being no power creep in Heroscape. It's the first "miniature battle" game I ever got into, and from what I always read, there's not one better!

Neither price nor quantity is really the sign of a good restaurant...

however, a girlfriend that will dump or keep you depending on your restaurant choice may be the sign of a less-than-quality girlfriend. :P

Let's just say if your gal is cool with Mickey D's after prom and a movie rental... well, then, buddy,... you better let her keep the toy from the Happy Meal.

:P fine with me, unless they start putting 'Scape in Happy Meals ... (though I'm guessing I probably wouldn't want the 'Scape under those conditions).
I had a bad experience with a not-so-digestible milk shake last time I went to McDonald's though, so if I ever redid prom, I'd have to go BK.

BK can go rot. How can you ruin Coke? Every BK I've gone to not just the Coke, but all the sodas, taste like perfume, which I'm told is a sign of lifeforms floatin' in your cup. One place I can understand, but all of them?

I've actually been advocating this since .net.

Well, Ninth, that would make them truly Happy Meals ...
And EJ, I'm not really big on fast food in general these days - just put BK in there as a placeholder.
