Just purchased Capes & Cowls today.
I'm anxious to receive this game and try it out.
C&C was created by Robin Spriggs.
Love or hate his custom efforts, Spriggs was Ozmanstrange back on Heroscape.net.
He was one of the first members who did superhero HS customs.
Whatever your opinion on their compatibility with standard units, you have to admit he brought some cool ideas to the custom scene.
Anyway, Capes & Cowls is (finally!) released.
http://www.houseofnine.com/capesandcowls.html
I'm looking forward to playing this game.
The overall design is garish and entertaining - the way I like my Supers comics.
I'd love t hear from anyone else who owns, has played, or plans to purchase this game.
I wish HQer Derteufel was still around. He had the Diablo Azul character for his avatar back then. He must've played the game at some point...
Anyway, here are some images cuz I'm an image whorehound.

My boys and I are huge fans of this game. I was fortunate enough to find it at my FLGS way back during the holidays, and I love it a little more every time I play it. It's quick and easy to learn, but extremely challenging on a tactical level, with a great mix of interesting characters and powers. If you enjoy superheroes (especially the flashy, colorful, golden-agey, silver-agey kind), it's the best game out there--at least in my book.

Well at least it's popular! Sorry to hear you didn't get it, HEH. That happened to me with Viktory. I was debating whether to buy it and waited one week too long. He sold out of the first printing and wouldn't have anymore until Viktory II came out. It was worth the wait though. Viktory II is an awesome game.
Here's hoping for a fast reprint because it does look like a very cool game!

It's been out for some time, Hex. If you look over at the geek, you can see a conversation I had (in my Leprejuan persona) with people (including Reaper) about picking it up myself.
I just couldn't quite get over the impression that the powers would be a little too random and overpowering, the way his customs were. Once Marvel 'scape and Tannhauser are out and played over, I'll see if he's printed any more.

Here are some scanned images from Capes & Cowls. I'm loving the look of this game more and more. nicely designed. We'll see how it plays.
I've been reading over the rule book and adventure book tonight and found some neat things to share.
Like Heroscape, there are Heroes and squads (Crews in this game) to play.
The crews include: Arachindrones, Darlkings, Diabloids, Freedom Partrols, Liberty bots, Thugs, and...Zombies,
Here is an escape from the Zombies scenario set up page:
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h249/jonan_jello/CC001.jpg
Another I'm aching to try: A seek and retrieve scenario. As well, a rescue mission while battling bots!
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h249/jonan_jello/CC002.jpg
A handful of the 32 heroes available in the game. Hot Shot has a DED-like ability,

Moon-Beast gets crazy insane as the game goes on! Love the abilities on Marasmos and Baron Necro!

If your tastes are anything like mine, Hex, you're in for a real treat. It's a very skill-focused system that does a great job of capturing the feel of super-hero battles. In the standard game, when you've got four or five supers to a team, the battles are amazingly varied and fun.
I especially love how no two characters share the same power(s) -- except for Baron Necro and his zombies, of course.

I got to play this three times with my 7-year old son this weekend.
Omigawd.
Such an excellent game! It sets out to do exactly what it's supposed to - capture the feel, flavor, and fun of classic super-hero comics.
A very fun game.
I played a basic match up of 4 heroes vs. 4 heroes against my son to help familiarize ourselves with the game and characters.
Then I let my son pick a scenario from the Adventure Book. He chose, The Loot of All Evil!. In this game he and I must take 4 heroes each and find loot stolen and stashed throughout the city.
Whoever finds the most loot by the end of round 10, wins.
He took the victory from me without me even throwing the game in the least bit.
As players search for the randomly placed loot, they're subjected to surprises such as bombs which inflict 1 POW (Points Of Whup) and contraptions that send your character back to their starting zone.
:P
The next match-up was the scenario titled, Girls' Night Out. My son chose this one because he liked how, halfway through the game, the player using the crew cards (Thugs in this case) loses his figures as they flee the game and the oppressive police force of Wyrd City, The Freedom Patrol, appear on the board to continue the fight against the heroines.
Keep in mind super-beings are outlawed from Wyrd City. The ruling body establishe the Freedom Patrol and the Liberty Bots to protect, serve, and oppress!
As per the instructions, my son had to choose four heroines (thus the scenario's title) to battle the thugs/FP.
He won this match-up as well! I thought for sure I had him once the Freedom Patrols showed up. I was getting 3-4 extra turns than his 4 turns each round. But my victory wasn't to be. His Titana is a Harsh Mistress of a character, indeed...
LOVE this game and can't wait to play more.
Favorite heroes to draft: Hellrags, Da Blink (think Nightcrawler), Docter Grimfate (a ruthless Doctor Strange), and The Mole!!!
CONS:
* The price tag. Expensive commitment for a game unplayed by many.
I'm hoping someone will create a Vassal version for C&C. the game lends itself pefectly to the Vassal format.
* I was shocked how small the board and pieces are, but the fun factor really outshines this attribute.
* Besides the dice, figure stands, and round marker, everything else is cardboard.
I don't mind and I think the quality lends itself to the D.I.Y. feel of this game, but that's expensive cardboard for $50!

Some more scans of the terrific artwork:
Game board. Unique to this game is the board. Instead of rolling with dice an attack or defense, you simply add the space value to your character's stat. The battle dice are used to determine ties ( a roll of 5 or 6 allows the attack to happen) or attempt a successful attack when the attack value is low ( a roll of 6 allows a successful attack). Makes the game very much more strategic than luck-based.
The colored squares relate to powers on certain character cards:
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h249/jonan_jello/CCGAMEBOARD.jpg
Heroes. Note that there are back views of each character as well.
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h249/jonan_jello/CCHeroes.jpg
Crews. Much like Heroscape, there are squads of henchmen, police, and creatures. I really dig the Darklings:
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h249/jonan_jello/CCcrews085.jpg
Crew cards. The Arachnidrones remind me of the Shaolin Monks:

Newb.
Newb, a lot of the scenarios have a group of heroes (or a solo hero like Ygg) facing off against a group of henchmen.
Usually, the crews outnumber the heroes by about four or five additional characters and that creates extra turns for the player using the crews!
On each crew card and figure is a number to keep track of which henchmen has been spent, wounded, affected, etc.
The Darklings, Zombies, Arachindrones, and Diabloids are minions of one of the heroes.
For instance, at the end of each round that Baron Necro is in play, the controlling player may place a zombie in his/her starting zone!
:zombie:
8)
These undead do not count toward victory conditions in the scenarios.
I've only used the Zombies, Thugs, and Freedom Patrol.
I really want to try the Darklings and the Arachnidrones.

So true! In my opinion, it's pretty close to brilliant. And I think the compactness is a huge plus--a whole world of supers in a small enough package to take and play practically anywhere. My boys have even taken it on a couple of camping trips.

I played another game with my son just last night. He let me choose the scenario.
I picked Adventure 13, as I had been aching to try this since I first read it in the Adventure Book. The mission seems nearly impossible to pull off: All four Heroes must retreive all four safes and make it back to the starting zone by Round 10. They may not carry more than one safe and once they reach the starting zone, they exit the game and cannot return.
At the beginning of each round the contraptions (the three machines located at the ends of the halls) fire a deadly laser beam at the heroes with a possibility of inflicting 1 point of POW! (Points Of Whup!) or wound.
Adventure 13 – Better Unsafe than Saarhi!

~
My son took the Liberty Bots.
http://images.boardgamegeek.com/images/pic215674_md.jpg
I chose four heroes who I though could handle the challenging mission:
Lady Lightning - She has the highest movement in the game - a whopping 12!
Ygg - for his incredible Vigor (life points) and regeneration power.
Titana - for her high Vigor and tough abilities.
Fantazm - his Vision-like powers allows him to pass through walls, figures, and objects.
http://images.boardgamegeek.com/images/pic215673_md.jpg
The game begins:

Yes! I should echo this sentiment.
Love playing C&C as it's easy to set up, no-hassle to cart around.
That is a plus to having all the cardboard components!

~Part 2 ~
Round 1
So I lead off with Lady Lightning. I zoom her out and all the way over to a safe. I make the roll and acquire the object.
Things are looking good, but then I see 1 Liberty Bot headed in the speed queen's direction to cut off her exit route - yikes!
(Lady Lightning is in the bottom right corner adjacent to a Bot as one more lumbers down the corridor.)
http://images.boardgamegeek.com/images/pic215676_md.jpg
In a near-panic, I forget to send Fantazm through another wall and attempt to covet an additional safe.
The Liberty Bots move in all the while.
Round 2
I make the roll for all heroes in 'open' spaces of the contraptions. Ygg takes a point of POW! The others are fine.
I move Fantazm onto a white space and begin assaulting a Bot engaged to Lady Lightning. If Fantazm attacks from a white space, he automatically inflicts 1 POW! on his adversary. A nifty, potent ability, but it's not going to help L.L. in the long run.
By Round 3, she's taken all 4 POW!s that she can and is KOed.
I cannot win with just three heroes as one each are needed to carry out 1 safe. Game Over.
I didn't even make it through half of the 10 rounds!
:x
Gosh I need to try that scenario again. Hopefully play again tonight
My son is now 3-0 in C&C.

Guys, if you can get it for the $50 price tag like me (I incorrectly told Ninth I paid $44. I did pay $50 looking back on the transaction. ), grab it!
It doesn't look very enticing in the pictures, I know, but it is a great, FUN game. Quick to set up, portable, quick to play, and total classic super=hero.
A man named Barry Zimmerman gives a glowing, spot-on review of C&C on BGG. Read it as he explains the fascination with this game better than me:
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/157707
I wouldn't keep plugging a game so strongly unless I felt it was that good.
It is.
I'm even fiddling with the idea of starting a C&C fan forum site.
I played my son the Saarhi scenario again. I fared a little better, but still have not managed to rescue a single orb - it's tough work being a super in Wyrd City!!!

Better Unsafe Than Saarhi
Attempt #2
My son and I walk home after school and set up the board for a re-match of yesterday's disaster. I'm intent on taking the same four heroes and succeeding in rescuing the four Orbs of Saarhi
 Note: when you see a playing card turned sideways, that indicates a spent character - or in HS terms, the order marker is down.
Instead of moving out my weaker, faster heroes, I try the hardier Heroes.
I lead with Ygg.
He engages two Bots and uses his Thunder Stomp ability to 'spend' the two Bots
(this is the equivalent of Dund's Crippling Stare without the D20 roll!!!!)
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h249/jonan_jello/Capes%20and%20Cowls/Saarhi2001.jpg
Next, I move out Titana to take on the Liberty Bots on the right-hand side of the board.
Lady Lightning rushes in when the moment is at hand.
Fantazm patiently waits his turn...
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h249/jonan_jello/Capes%20and%20Cowls/Saarhi2002.jpg
Titana gets pinned down by two Bots and starts taking massive damage from their pummeling orb hands and laser shots from the contraptions at the ends of the halls!
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h249/jonan_jello/Capes%20and%20Cowls/Saarhi2004.jpg
I move Titana out of harm's way (no disengagement swipes in C&C).
And move Lady Lightning in to do her Lightning Fists ability (think Shaolin Assault from Heroscape).
She tags both Bots, but they have a hefty Vigor (life) of 4!
It's going to be a long slugfest for the heroes.
Fantazm makes his way over to the safe (Fantazm is like the Vision. He can pass through walls, figures, objects).
He attempts to grab the safe (d6 roll of 3 or higher), but does not succeed.
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h249/jonan_jello/Capes%20and%20Cowls/Saarhi2005.jpg
Lady Lightning dashes away from the pummelig Bots and hides behind Titana in order to dodge the automatic laser beam attack at the beginning of the next round
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h249/jonan_jello/Capes%20and%20Cowls/Saarhi2006.jpg
Lady Lightning mad-dashes to the far right corner's safe.
She attempts to pick it up, but cannot get the roll!!!!
Arrrght!!!
:frustrated:
But! Fantazm has succeeded in picking up his safe (note the safe on his playing card.
Ygg is in prime location to Thunder Stomp some more Bots.
The Bots close in on Titana, intent on dropping her.
They tag her for 5 POW!s, but she has seven total.
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h249/jonan_jello/Capes%20and%20Cowls/Saarhi2007.jpg
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h249/jonan_jello/Capes%20and%20Cowls/Saarhi2008.jpg
The Liberty Bots close in on Lady Lightning.
Knowing the speed princess is trapped and doomed, Titana runs after the Bots.
Before heading back to the starting zone and exiting the game, I send Fantazm over to assist Ygg with the two Bots on his wooden hide.
the ghost hero cannot prevent a hit from a laser beam at the beginning of the round.
It's at this point I make a fatal flaw.
Instead of activating Titana at the beginning of the round and destroy a Liberty Bot, I activate Ygg to cancel two of my son's turns with the Bots that surround him.
It's at this point that my son pummels Lady Lightning into a KO and secure another victory for the Saarhi holders.
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h249/jonan_jello/Capes%20and%20Cowls/Saarhi2009.jpg
Another great game. I'm still anxious to be victorious in this scenario.
I think I may drop Lady Lightning and go for another hero that can remove turns from my son.
NOTE: I've realized, utilizing the heavy hitters like Ygg and Titana, that I can destroy wall spaces, and destroy/throw the contraptions!
I'm definitely going to try these actions next Saarhi attempt!
:duh:
Stay tuned, true believers for more tales from Wyrd City!

Guys, if you can get it for the $50 price tag like me (I incorrectly told Ninth I paid $44. I did pay $50 looking back on the transaction. ), grab it!
I got mine for $39.95, plus tax. Also, after you posted the link, I directed a friend to buy a copy from HON, and he paid $39.95 as well, with only $4 for shipping. Since then, though, I've noticed that the price of shipping has increased.

I updated the last game report with a correction.
Rubble markers are only used when rooftop spaces are destroyed.
When destroying wall sections, no rubble marker is needed.
Rubble markers affect the space color and value beneath them!
Learning as I go,

I played Better Unsafe Than Saarhi against my son last night.
I switched up my team. Rather than take Lady Lightning, who seemed to be my weakest link, I drafted Manchine for his defense and Vigor.
It was a much different experience knowing half my super-hero team could SMASH through walls! Too much fun clearing out the barriers.
Ygg even got to a contraption and threw it at a Liberty Bot!
I lasted about 6 rounds before my son KO-ed Manchine for his SEVENTH straight win in this game.
I've yet to win!
I did do a little better in this scenario. I managed to get to three of the four safes. Fantazm managed to rescue one orb.
Titana got to a third, but couldn't manage the roll to pick it up.
When she did grab the safe, she was surrounded by Liberty Bots.

I checked in at the House of Nine site today. No new supply of C&C.
But I'll keep looking and post a heads-up if they do get some more in and I notice.
My son and I have laid low on Capes & Cowls for a while.
I think my son got a little tired of beating me.
The last couple nights, we've got out Midnight Party and had the girls join us! A fun, simple game for the young ones.

Looks like it's currently available from Amazon, but at a higher price:

Interesting!
I'd like to leave a review when I have time and provide some pictures of the game components.
Thanks for sharing that, TweetyBird.

Any idea how we can get this game converted to the Vassal format?
I tried PM-ing who I thought would be adequate to answer the question, but am still waiting on a response.

Awesome!!!!
Through Amazon?
Let us know when you receive it, NewB.
Tell me what you think of the game components, board, rules, etc.!
I'd like someday, to re-create the board larger-sized and objects in 3-D.
And use repainted Heroclix for stand ins (Dr. Strange repainted like Dr. Grimfate, Dreadnoughts for Liberty Bots, etc.).

I was thinking exactly the same. Just use some 1-inch black bases available from most game stores to replace the Heroclix bases and do some paint touch-ups. Viola, 3d C&C!!
I'm hoping that Amazon is accurate with their inventory count.

I played another game of Capes and Cowls with my son today. I made some early, rash moves and it cost me dearly. My son is undefeated in this game so far.
We played Scenario 8 (the title eludes me currently).
Four heroes have to take out the Brown recluse by 10 rounds. The Recluse has six Arachindrones to command.
I was the Recluse and Drones. My son took: Star Knight, Golden Missile, Hotshot, and Frostbite.
~
This game is amazing. I'm hoping more gamers here get it and give it a spin. I can't possibly play and think of all the combinations of Super-heroes like we 'Scapers do with HS.
It's a very well-developed game. I'm just regretful I can't play it as often as HS.

I think that's my favorite photo so far, HEH. It reminds me of the last time I played the Brown Recluse adventure. In fact, I recruited nearly the same team that your son did.
I can't believe you still haven't won a game, though! You'd better start looking for easier prey.
Have you played many standard games yet? That's where the competition can get really intense, with four or five multi-powered heroes to a team.

Our first game together was The Loot of All Evil. That was a blast.
I need to set one of those heroes versus heroes battles again.
Do you have any knowledge how we could convert this game to the online Vassal program? I'm anxious to help with any scanning or other work that would need to be done.
* Note in the above images: when I spend a hero card, I turn it the incorrect way (according to the rule book).
I'm left-handed, so it come naturally to me to run the card counter-clockwise.

TweetyBird, did you get the insert in your copy of Capes & Cowls?
The cardboard piece with the headshots of all the characters framing the world of Wyrd City is not in my copy.
Here is an image from BGG from which I noticed the discrepancy with my copy. I've highlighted the difference with the red frame:

Would've been cool to have that addtional piece of artwork.
NewB, let me know if your print run has it!

I'm taking C&C with me to our cabin home. I'll be sure to get back to you all and let you know how other scenarios performed. Here's hoping I might even win a few!

Yes, indeedy! And of the two or three copies I've seen opened for play at the local comic shop had them as well. Are you sure you don't have one? A photo that you posted earlier in this thread plainly shows the insert, but you've got it upside down, using it as a tray:

HS, get C&C now. Any way you can. It's a lot of fun. I'm currently on vacation with my family. When the kids go down for the evening, I've been getting in 2-3 solo games. I've sampled and re-sampled nearly all the scenarios in the Adventure Book.
Oh.....if only i could get one at a reasonable price....
I think i just have to wait.
Let's hope they keep it in print and the cost eventually comes down a bit or they're readily available on eBay. I'm thinking of buying another set for backup.

A handsome game regardless of all its cardboard components, eh, Newbie?
It's quite fun. Play some solo adventures like me and tell me what you think of the game mechanics.
This is to anyone who's played and have some good opinions of the game:
:?: What do you all think of Tenebro? Is he insanely tough or what?!? His ability to reduce all opponents' stats by 1 makes him a choice pick for many of the adventures.
I'm digging Diablo Azul of course, but I think Tenebro is da bomb!
:!: Star Knight with his Stellar Leadership ability is quite choice for many adventures as well. That's an extra turn or a return on a spent hero that Diablo Azul might've had his way with!
Cool stuff. A great game. I'm truly hooked, interested in making customs and getting it transferred to the Vassal format!!!!
