hey had an idea for a new type of terrain tell me what you think. i have decided to label
it as Mimring's home terrain(or at least where he's been):
sorry bit blurry but you get the idea.
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10355/normal_IMG_0581.JPGhttp://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10355/normal_IMG_0565.JPG
i like to use as many hexes as i still can with my terrain so here you can see
Mimring can move around a bit still
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10355/normal_IMG_0580.JPG
and what's a fire dragon with out a charred ground for a base?(blurry again sorry)

i'm working on more pieces, but i had to post it.

i also made my own tree and re-did the ruins a bit:

Maybe it is the pic itself that makes it hard to tell but.....

Is it a black flock or a really really dark green?

Cale
May 3rd, 2007, 11:17 PM
what i did was flock it with the same stuff i would with my grass and then added a very dark black wash(very wet and messy but got the result i wanted). i did this because 1. i didn't have any black flock and 2. because i wanted a hint of "regrowth" showing through. you know after a big burn the green seems to shine through the ash after a bit. the flocking reacted to the water a certain way and it now actually feels like it was charred too. then after everything i added a slight hint of a gray wash(very light paint to a lot of water) to the tree stump, log, and rocks to give a slight look of ash in some places... the pictures don't do it justice.

Sure the terrain looks great, but it's incomplete without some cool house rules to accompany it. :D

Cale
May 3rd, 2007, 11:37 PM
hey with new terrain comes new rules right? well i'm up for suggestions- i'm not too good at that part. only thing i can think of is the Hasboro made up ones, and they don't really apply with ash and charred stuff...

I think you should call the black ground blight (from Warcraft 3)

Cale
May 4th, 2007, 10:14 PM
Blight refers to a specific symptom that can be expressed by plants in response to infection by a plant pathogenic organism.

good idea, but i'm already making more burnt things(still standing burnt tree, more logs on the ground and looking into making a "dragon cave"- hey who knows maybe Cupids Art can pick that one up :D )

thanks for the suggestion(of course anyone can go ahead and make this for themselves and call it what-ever-the-heck terrain if they wanted)

I'd call it "scorched earth" and have any non flying figures roll one attack die for damages every time they move on a space (or if that sounds too severe, one die for each turn they end on a scorched earth space). That way it's more powerful than lava field and less powerful than molten lava.

sorry i haven't been updating, i just broke my right ankle really bad, had to go into surgery and am now on some heavy pain pills. good news is i'll have a lot of time on my hands for the next couple of months and i'm gonna try and get around( ) to making more terrain, trees, and maybe i can do a tutorial on my ruins. i'll have to see if i can come up with some stock ones... or i'll just verbally(written) give step by step instructions. thanks for being patient.

hey! had some time to get into this a bit more... made some more "scorched earth" terrain(some not a lot at all:( ) and had a cool idea for a teleport rune stone:

first stage goes to Mimring:
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10355/normal_IMG_0680.JPG
looks a bit green in the photos but not so much in person
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10355/normal_charredearth.jpg

now here's my new creation. i think i'm gonna call it either the "Rune Stone of Farmognušr" or "Rune Stone of Ehwaz"
Farmognušr is one of the many names for Odin- but specifically the "Journey Empowerer".
Ehwaz is a rune in the Norse mythology meaning "Transportation". May represent a horse, car, plane, boat or other vehicle.

basically what this Rune Stone will do is teleport you from the stone to another location(using the Destination Tile)

hope you like i have some stats after pics:
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10355/normal_runestonefr2.jpg
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10355/normal_IMG_0688.JPG
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10355/normal_runestonebk.jpg
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10355/normal_IMG_0690.JPG

Rune Stone of Farmognušr:

Teleport
Any character that steps in front of the Rune Stone during or after moving but before attacking, is immediately(no choice) taken to the Destination Tile. Movement for that character is complete. If there is another object or character still remaining on the Destination Tile while teleportation occurs, that character or object is destroyed. The Destination Tile must have a level area for a two spaced character to teleport safely, if not the character is placed adjacent to the Destination Tile and receives 3 wound markers. Glyphs may not be placed in front of the Rune Stone.

Defensive Aura
Any character who has teleported receives a defense +2 for one round as long as they remain on the Destination Tile.

hope you like

Tutorial for making tree stumps:

Materials needed:
I used a terracotta air dry clay(you can use any color as long as it air dries, but terracotta seems to be less visible if you miss spots while painting)
3 colors of acrylic paint: Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna, and Quaker Grey is what i used
An X-acto knife
Single hex tile top painted green(painted not really necessary)
Paper towel(not pictured)
three different brushes: one for wash, one for dry brush, and one for regular painting(not pictured)
Woodland Scenics fine flocking(i used Blended Turf- Green Blend T49)(not pictured)
Elmers Glue(not pictured)
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10355/normal_IMG_0717.JPG

Step 1:
pull out a cube of clay that will sit on top of the hex without being too tall and too wide.
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10355/normal_IMG_0719.JPG
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10355/normal_IMG_0718.JPG

*Note* When sealing air dry clay, make sure you squeeze all the air out and tape tightly shut. i also place in a ziplock bag with the air squeezed out of that as well.(see pic at materials needed)

Step 2:
Attach clay cube to hex by smooshing in a downward pattern as shown
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10355/normal_IMG_0720.JPG
try not too go too far as i did(i ended up trimming it later)
now sculpt the exposed root section by pinching and sculpt it with your index finger and thumb
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10355/normal_IMG_0721.JPG

Step 3:
Take your X-acto knife and scratch in the wood grain and shape the roots a little more. make the trunk look like it goes straight down with the roots looking like they flair out but have more of a rounded and separate look. for inspiration a simple google search for tree stump pics should help.
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10355/normal_IMG_0723.JPG
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10355/normal_IMG_0725.JPG
detail the top(i found a couple pics i liked and tried to duplicate them)
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10355/normal_IMG_0726.JPG
i added a last minute hole in the top and scratched the inside as i did the outside
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10355/normal_IMG_0728.JPG

Step 4:
Now that the detailing is done and to your liking let dry. i don't have that much patience so i set up a fan
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10355/normal_IMG_0729.JPG
After it dries it's a good idea to just lightly rub your finger along the whole outside to break loose any little tiny pieces that might still be there from the scratching process

Step 5:
Painting.
1.first use your darkest color(burnt umber) and paint the whole thing. make sure and use a stiff bristle so that you can really shove paint into all the little cracks and holes. make sure and look at the stump from all different angles so that you can get everything covered. if you miss any(especially if you don't use terracotta) it will show up. let dry before moving on.
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10355/normal_IMG_0758.JPG
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10355/normal_IMG_0759.JPG

2.now the second coat take your mid color(burnt sienna) and make it a wash by adding water so that it has the consistency of ink. after dipping your paint brush in the wash, wipe almost all of it off using your paper towel. let dry before moving on.
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10355/normal_IMG_0771.JPG
cover stump with wash as desired(this just gives it a hint of another color)
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10355/normal_IMG_0762.JPG

3. now take your lightest color(quaker grey) and dry brush it on using strokes that go either up or down. to do a dry brush, dip a dry brush in the paint ever so slightly and then dab the paint off using your paper towel. when 90% if not more is off, then you can lightly start stroking it on the stump. after i finished that i thought the stump was too light, so i repeated painting step 2 very lightly, and liked the result.
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10355/normal_IMG_0763.JPG
*Note* you can always test your painting along the bottom of the stump as we will be covering it up with flock.

Step 6:
Flocking.
1. take your elmers glue and spread it along the base(and anywhere else you want the flocking to go)
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10355/normal_IMG_0765.JPG
you can also use a tooth pick and spread it.
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10355/normal_IMG_0767.JPG

2.place your stump on a piece of paper. take your flocking and sprinkle it around the base excessively.
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10355/normal_IMG_0768.JPG
then take your index finger and smoosh the flocking into the glue(or where you remember the glue being.) then pull the stump out and turn it upside down and lightly tap the bottom of the hex a couple times to release any loose flocking. (to put back flocking into bag simply bend paper into a hot dog shape and pour into bag.)
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10355/normal_IMG_0769.JPG

There you go! easy stump. it's a fun addition to the look of the battlefield. Hope you all liked it and can follow easily. if you want to seal it(the flocking stays on better) i use Krylon Matte Finish Clear Coat, or Flat would be good too.

here's my newest creation. hope you all enjoy this one.

i call it the Well-Spring of Eir. "Eir means 'mercy' in Old Norse. This was the name of a Norse goddess of healing and medicine." so i'm sure you'll be able to guess the rules that go with it.

Healing Water
Any hero character with wounds can drink of the water and
receive healing of up to two wound markers. Each hero can
only use the Well-Spring once per game.

Resurrection Water
To use the resurrection water, all surviving squad characters
must be standing on the ruins with one adjacent to the Well-Spring.
Each squad may only resurrect one character per game, placing
resurrected character adjacent to another member of the same squad.

and here are the pics:
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10355/normal_IMG_0778.JPGhttp://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10355/normal_IMG_0783.JPG

http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/10355/normal_IMG_0787.JPG

Hey it's been awhile and with all the Marro and swamp customs out there, i feel i'm way behind the times, but thought of a good and cheap way to add just a bit more to the snow expansion.
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/snow_tile.jpg
http://www.heroscapers.com/oldgallery/albums/userpics/snow_glac.jpg

It's pretty simple! All you do for the tiles is follow Grish's thread on flocking the tiles, except all you use is some Baking Soda(it's the closest matching white i found) and with the Glaciers all you do is get a toothpick to spot glue the ledges and then sprinkle on the soda. easy and cheap. don't forget to clear finish it later!

added some snow for the character base and the trees are made out of wire then coated with modeling clay and baked then spray primer grey and then painted with acrylics(white for the whole thing then accents of grey with black on top) hot glued down to the base and then baking soda flock on the branches and the base.

home made tree with a single tile painted to match the flocking and like i said i think i want to add the ladder later.

EDIT: size comparison... i got the tile a little crooked so the ladder doesn't quite fit perfectly but oh well..

ok i've had a lot of time to do some customs, but then i decided(which seems to be my problem) to start another project, and then another, and then another and so i have about three or four projects right now, but they're all not done... except i remembered i was going to make a ladder for the tree stand. sooo here it is:
http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh68/CaleHofthak/IMG_1848.jpg

And now with Drake climbing it.
http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh68/CaleHofthak/IMG_1849.jpg
As you can see i had to secure the ladder at the bottom and it was still a bit loose so the ladder "swings" a bit. i didn't like the outcome too much so i think i'll stick to regular ol' ladders that are solid a bit more... i like the looks, but the usability is somewhat difficult. hope you liked

Try this ladder design. It is sturdy and easy to make.

thanks for all your comments. everyone.

Drizzi- nice signature.

Raudulfr- thanks for that link... it's exactly what i'm gonna use on my next project... or one of the ones i'm currently working on, i guess.

Newb- thanks and i just played a game with the tree stand incorporated in it and it was very cool, the tree actually blocks line of sight when enemies get close enough, so it's not a total advantage for the person, but still has the effects of a regular castle tower. very good addition i think.

more to come hopefully soon.

Love the tree covered in snow. I was thinking of trying to make a
whole wintry forest scene but wasn't sure how to start. All I have to
do now is convince my girlfriend to let me cook clay in her oven....
Great work.

Thank you everyone who have continued to comment on my stuff, even though I have been gone for nearly 4 years. I am truly humbled. Sorry I am not able to continue to give updates, but you are in good hands with some GREAT artists here.
