I have an idea for a racing game. The mechanics of the game will be rooted in American design with some Euro influence, kind of like Days of Wonder games or some of the FFG titles that come from Europe.
My question is, what would be the most popular theme for this game. I know in the scheme of things the theme may not end up mattering if it were to someday get published, as the publisher may very well change the theme. But, if I want to just make it print and play or something, I want a fun theme for it.
So...
I originally was thinking of the game in terms of traditional stock car racing, but I am not sure if that theme is so good, because it probably has a pretty narrow appeal.
I also thought it could be some sort of futuristic sci fi race, or a fantasy based race. It could also be some sort of cartoony thing ala Wacky Racers.
Another option would be some sort of real life event that is kind of offbeat like Iditarod.
I guess my question is, if you sit down to play a racing game, what style of racing game would you want it to be?

I'd like to see a car game based on baja racing or desert racing.
As far as I know, there isn't a board game like that.

The big German publishers have determined that sci-fi themes simply don't sell well. I know at least one excellent race game (Zauberstauber) that started out life being about space ships, and finished it being about broomsticks.

Do a Hotwheels theme. It is like you are really racing but with a giant hotwheel. Look at the huge variety of Hotwheels out there. It would be cool if you could somehow use the game mechanics to customize your car to match a Hotwheel you might own. It could work like a drafting process.
"OK I am going with a coupe body style, and I'm adding Fat Tires, Huge Tailpipes, and Flames."

I made a race game once, inspired by a hybrid of milton bradleys TURBO and THUNDER ROAD... I used micro machines and a track that was modular tiles kinda like a card board slot car track... A few years after I made it, I noticed Galoob selling a Micro Machine game that looked just like it... makes me wonder wich of my friends sent the instructins in and cashed in ;) lol...
