View Full Version : Tree Forts you can use and a Burnt up house! 4-25 update

Alright, a tree fort that you can use in HS. I dont have any pictures of the tree making process. Basically I found a stick that I wanted to use, soaked it in bleach, let it dry and started applying clay to it in a shape that I thought looked cool. Once I found the shape I liked, I got some feedback from the wife, she said "Looks Great!" After that, used a small nail to make gouge lines to simulate bark. Carefully threw it in the oven, let it harden then painted it brown. Dry brushed mushroom and washed it with black.
The pictures are not great, the battery died, so this is what I've got so far.
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p294/insomnimaniachero/PICT2046.jpg
And.... with a 7 hex snapped into place (like you would snap two hexes together), on top of the tree.
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p294/insomnimaniachero/PICT2050.jpg
Thanks for looking at it. First time sculpting anything serious, ever... I'm going to make a fort out of the 7 hex on top, once I get that finished, I'll post more pictures.
This project was free. Didn't have the need to buy any materials.
The material list:
Cardboard
Glue
Spackle
Paint of your choice.
This first picture, just cut off the flaps of a cardboard box you may have left over.
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p294/insomnimaniachero/PICT1970.jpg
As you can see, they were pretty big, so I took a figure to get the size somewhere about right.
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p294/insomnimaniachero/PICT1971.jpg
In this picture, just get an outline of the broken walls that you want. The 2 straight lines represent where the 2nd floor is going to be.
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p294/insomnimaniachero/PICT1973.jpg
This is a mock up of the 2 sides cut out. Be careful as cardboard can be a bit difficult to cut, so watch your body parts.
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p294/insomnimaniachero/PICT1975.jpg
Glue the 2 walls together, making sure it stays together until dry. Cut a base out of a cereal box, draw up some hexes. The hexes that wont be able to hold a figure, I'm going to put rubble.
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p294/insomnimaniachero/PICT1978.jpg
Use some spackle/wall putty for the walls exterior and interior. I wasn't too worried how the exterior looked as it is war torn and burnt up, the inside however, I tried to make smooth. A small putty knife (about an inch or so is great).
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p294/insomnimaniachero/PICT1981.jpg
Here, you take a dark grey and water it down. Not thin like a wash, but thinner then normal. Run a wide brush over the exterior as if you are dry brushing it. I didn't get the whole thing grey, leave the cracks and holes white.
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p294/insomnimaniachero/PICT1984.jpg
Next, dry brush the windows and surrounding areas black, Making it a solid black next to the window and fading upwards to give that burnt/smoked look.
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p294/insomnimaniachero/PICT1988.jpg
I still have the rubble to do and some small detail. I just wanted to this tutorial up. Free, you can't beat that (if you have the materials). If you don't have the materials, then it will not cost more then $5.00.
I hope you like it and can use this to add another dimension to the battlefield. I'd like to see what people come up with.
Enjoy

I guess I should have paid more attention to which forum you posted in. Oh - and the custom terrain looks cool too...

Your welcome, it's pretty easy to do. The hardest part is waiting for the putty to dry.

When I read sooty, at first I thought it said shoty... I was about to cry
:( haha. Thank you. It is very simple, and the windows are perfect height for the crouching AE (which I made this house for).

I would like to see what you've got in mind. Make sure you post pictures, promise? It wasn't really my idea. I walked into a game store and they had something like this for $40 or so and I thought that was too much plus I wanted to make the AE feel right at home.
Sweet and simple!
Real simple. It was just time consuming with things having to dry, but other then that, it was easy. You don't have to be too worried about a paint job or the way its going to look when it is supposed to be burnt, blown up, falling apart.

I can't have my house burn down..... Scary thought. Thank you looking at the custom. I guess you should have paid more attention to which thread this IS in... haha  Just giving ya a hard time.

What does ftw stand for? I think that is the second or third time i've noticed it and still can't figure it out. I can't take credit for originality, but I will take credit for it being so cost effective. When you make one, I wan't to see pictures.

Your welcome. You know that Bob Barker is retiring. I thought of that because you said "price is right!"
I'm planning on a whole bunch of budget terrain. This was just a step in that direction. I'm making a geocities website for this low budget terrain idea with minimal materials.
Stay on the look out for that site.
spakckle Spaz
I don't know if that means you love spackle or not, but..... with this house, you don't really need to worry about how it comes out. It is supposed to look beat up, blown up, torn up and any other ____ up that properly fits in the blank. :D Stop the procrastination and lets see your work!

I have a three hex tower design I'm working on now. I don't know if I want to texture it with wood or metal. I kinda thought that the one hex tower would look like it was built quickly. The three hex I imageined as a more permanent building. But would orcs build with metal?

Oh, I would certainly imagine so. Not well, mind, but I'm sure they would. Metal has to be easier to work than stone -- an orcish plus in my mind -- and would certainly hold up better than wood -- another plus. I basically imagine orcish metalwork looking like spare parts held together with bailing wire, but I'm certain it would exist.

I went to Terra Genesis and did notice that they had these and a bunch more. When browsing their site, I noticed they used double cardboard when I just used single. I don't think its going to make a difference though. It was fun and easy.

Dang! Look at that. It IS huge, but I like it. It looks like the windows are a little high for the figures, but that is great!!
I've yet come up with a way to make a step or a ladder to the 2nd floor but am thinking about making "rubble" spaces going up.. Ahh, just an idea. Haven't been in the HS room in a week, works been crazy.

Wall paper is a good idea. Make it look even more real. I didn't think of that. The stone texture would look even better a bit darker. Maybe a dark wash over it?
I think it's looking good.
I'm not motivated to finish mine right now. I added some more detail, but want to add more.... 1 day I tell ya.

Tree looks really cool. What kind of clay specifically did you use for doing this work? I got some kind of harden in the oven clay from michaels but it would be fairly expensive to use large amounts of it. Are you planning on adding leaves to the tree, or is it more of a dead tree look?

The clay is Super Sculpey "ceramic-like sculpturing compound." $7.99 at Hobby Lobby for 1 pound. I've had the clay forever and wanted to use it up and thought a tree would be easy enough to make for a first time clay user.
I'm going to be adding some flock to it shortly (as leaves and grass at the trunk). I want to add a bunch of detail to the figure base. I'm thinking about having branches go over the figure base with wood randomly nailed and roped up as walls. I need to spend some time thinking about some other detail as well. Glad you like it and thanks for checking it out.
