Yep. I plan on getting 2x tundra (when I can, lol)
Thats 12 glaciers...
I'm gonna repaint some of them. I'll keep a couple looking like glaciers, but some I'm going to repaint black with red in the cracks to look like obsidian bacoliths, the other I'm gonna paint shades of grey to look like rock crags.
Has anyone else considered doing this? I mean, that is alot of ice.

Really not a bad idea.
If I can ever afford enough snow, I will be doing this.

What would be nice is if you could figure out some sort of reuseable membrane to put over the glacier and have some of each. That way you can go all the way and change back to ice again when the map calls for it.

didn't someone have some cool light affects on them that could make them change colors?

There is a rubber product similar to the stuff you find on the handles of tools. You could put some mold release or some vaseline on the glacier, dip it in the rubber and when it dries it should come off. then you could paint it and re use it... It might work.

I think maybe I could paint them dark grey and red to make them fit in with the otherwise boring lava landscape.

Not sure how well the vaseline idea would work, but as I recall it does peel off pretty easily. You could also try dusting the glacier with cornstarch first.

...You could put... ...some vaseline on the glacier...
sounds to me like you know all about the use of vaseline and other lubricants...
but thats sounds like a good idea....

I hadn't even thought of the tool handle stuff, but you would lose the texture of the glacier. Of course that isn't necessarily a bad thing. The vaseline sounds overboard, but the cornstarch might do the trick. A cooking oil spray may be the way to go. I might have to get some of that stuff and experiment with some test pieces. I wouldn't mind coating some of my tools anyway. Yeah, yeah, I know, :quarter:

Looking forward to seeing how you do this man. I have also thought of doing something to that effect when I get my ice.

What about making "flames" out of them?

Paint my Glaciers  no way. Wouldn't it be easier to do some foam rocks and not ruin your glaciers? If you do not know how to do this Pm me and I will tell you how inexpensively and easily. I hate to think you will just paint your glaciers though :passout: But they are yours so .....

There has been talk about painting the glaciers the same gray-blue color as the rock terrain so as to make rocky mountains to help spruce up the rock terrain. I think this would be a very cool idea, personally.
I do hope Hasbro comes out with some official hill/mountain pack. While the glaciers are great, having mountains or hills for use in a non-snow environment would be very nice. Versatile terrain such as the trees and bridges.
skyknight, you should consider making a thread about how to make these foam rock mountains you referred to. I'm sure a lot of people would be very interested in learning how.

I kinda eluded to it in my custom repaint section, take a look

I have since glued these on there appropriate sized hex bases as well. They are measured to the base and then cut out, I believe there is a pic in my customs on how they look if not check em out here

These are easy and cheap to make!!!

I think it would be pretty cool to make them look like lava cones. If you could find a way to light them from the inside. Maybe use battery operated lights or drill holes in a board and run christmas lights or those small light for porcelain Christmas cottages. Tape off with masking tape some fissures here and there, sponge paint the rest of them black and dark gray, pull the tape off to let the light through the cracks then paint the cracks with a red "stained glass" paint forom the hobby store.

I don't think it would be particularly reusable once peeled off, but I wonder how well "liquid latex" would adhere to the plastic (it's intended to be applied to skin as a sex toy; it doesn't have the adhesives that would bond it to what it's applied to); because it's thinner than tool dip, it would do a better job of following the existing texture, and could be painted after drying with acrylic paints. I don't know how durable it would be, though, even if it did cover properly.

I totally wanted to learn something new today (besides castle rules). I didn't know what a 'bacolith' was, but I realized it's Batholith:
A large mass of igneous rock that has melted and intruded surrounding strata at great depths.
Huh. I learned something new. Thanks JJ!

Sounds like a glacial condom to me.
What kind of paint would be able to stay on a rubbery, flexible surface like that?

I'm a bad procrastinator, so I haven't touched the idea for a month, but the liquid latex idea is another one to try. Since my last post in this thread I've been thinking off and on about this. I'm thinking that once I get a good one I'm going to fill it with some sort of injectible/expanding foam. I might make a set of molds out of plaster of paris (I think it might satisfy one of my son's cub scout requirements too!) of the glaciers that I could just spray in the foam and be done with a set.
No I don't procrastinate, it's just my version of measure twice cut once. Yeah, that's the ticket!

From what I remember, the expando-foam products that I've used (generally for their actual intended purpose of packing wall gaps *gasp*) have been pretty sticky; plaster-of-paris molds may not be a good solution. You'd probably be better off pouring the molds from RTV silicone rubber, which would allow you to flex the mold to help you get the casting out. There is a company, Isles Laboratories, Inc., that has a product line called "Mountains in Minutes", which is a two-component polyurethane expanding-foam for model railroad scenery, that could be useful for this. Hobby Masters (http://www.hobbymasters.com/) sells a a complete kit (http://www.hobbymasters.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=4823) for this kind of casting, consisting of a pint of each of the 'A' and 'B' compnents, latex mold compound, and mold release. You can also find the Isles Laboratories products through dealers in model railroading supplies like Walther's (http://www.walthers.com/exec/search?manu=473&split=30).

i was thinking the other day about painting the glaciers, I figured grey and black for rocks or maybe green, but my thinking was to fill in spaces on the board edges where you don't want line of site or usuable land.
I love all the other ideas, makes me think soon one of you smart scapers will get pictures up of your customs mountains to lead the way for us less savvy scapers, so thanks to all who post stuff that helps us make cool stuff, or mor likely dream of making cool stuff, yea I was just visulizing making a lot of cool cool stuff for heroscape ( wells, mountains, ruins, building, who knows ) thanks to a lot of hard work form you all.
Thanks
