Ok so I just started playing this game a couple of days ago and it is so much fun. Basically the concept is that the users make all the places and objects using a nifty model editor and a special script. If anyone plays this game here please give tips and advice.

It is definitely not a game - it is beyond that. Second Life is a vitural online 3D world.

So it's like Animal Crossing with Real People and Real Money?

Chameleon
April 3rd, 2007, 04:34 PM
I haven't played Animal Crossing, but Second Life is not a game. Second Life does have its own economy using their own currency called Linden dollars. It's free to join - you only need a computer, a network connection, and download their client software.

brickman1444

the main way to make linden's is to make an object and sell it in SL.

I've created my own volcano with flowing lava and it has an awesome eruption. Do you think I can sell that? :D

I've created a Heroscape group in Second Life. Anyone can join, just search for Heroscape from within SL.

I was born in Second Life yesterday, 5-5-07.
IT's a lot of fun. My bro-in-law, who's been on it for over two years, showed me around.

We took a ride in his hot air balloon, he gave me a pet octopus, and I met one of his 'friends'. We went dancing last night in Amsterdam.

I was a bumbling idiot trying to figure things out and wading through computer slogginess, but I had a great time.

I was soon left alone and decided to explore some more. Found some....intersting things out there....

I may go back real soon.

Hey Hex,

Join the Heroscape group in Second Life. I'll give you a tour of my island. I've recently added a cool treehouse. I have a pet octopus, too. I've scripted him to roam around the island. :D

I never found it either... heroscape gives 0 results... all that I seem to be able to find on that program, is images of hooters and moronic chat areas lol...

You just picked a day when Second Life is down for maintenance. It should be up shortly.

At the bottom of their website, there is a Downloads section. Go there and download the software for your computer. PC, Mac and Linux are supported.
Run the software and register, when the Second Life grid is back up.

Take my opinion with a grain of salt but frankly, Second Life sucks as a game and as a Cyberworld / Internet Hangout. Furthermore it's butt-ugly.

If you're so eager to spend some time in a virtual world, at least find one that 1. looks decent and 2. has something to it, other than making random greedy entrepreneurs (sp?) more money.

Again, solely my opinion - no offense intended.

I agree. But considering that Second Life is not a game, nor never intended to be a game, that is not surprising at all.

No offense taken. Apparently though the other 6 million people in Second Life think otherwise.
:).

Wytefang

Because we all know that if the masses endorse something it MUST be good.

Surely 6 million people can't have THAT bad of taste, right? Err...wait... :P

(Furthermore, they have nowhere near 6 million 'active' participants. Not even close. They may have had that many people pop in and log out, never to return, but no way do they have that many concurrent, regular customers. We hear these kinds of claims all the time in the MMO or VirtualSite spaces all the time and they're rarely, if ever, accurate.)

For one of the classes I took last semester, we were required to create a second life acct and download it. Then we (as a class of over a hundred people) were all suppossed to sign on simultaneously and play a series of soccer games. then we had to write a paper about our Second Life experience. Almost half the class never even made it into Second Life or got off Orientation Island, and I have to say I was really dissappointed with it. As soon as I got my grades I uninstalled it, and really didn't ever plan on going back. So tell me, am I just missing something? Or am I letting one bad experience bias my judgement of the environment and should I give it another try?

Let me just say that I completely skipped Orientation Island and only went there once for the free stuff they have at the end.

I never got any free stuff! What a rip-off! The biggest problem that I had, was once I got off Orientation Island, you go to a new island before you actually can get the the entire Second Life world. Once I figured THAT out, and got into the whole world, I was unable to teleport to the coordinates set up by my professor. I kept teleporting into a building that was really dark, and I couldn't see to get out of the building, and kept walking into things. I couldn't get my character to move around the obstacles that I couldn't see. Also, my computer kept freaking out when I opened the window to change her appearance, so I couldn't do that either.

I think I might have enjoyed it more if #1, there had been some comprehensive instructions on how to use the technology. As someone who is not vey technologically inclined, it is very frustrating to just "see what happens." #2, it hadn't been something that was required. The fact that my professor even assigned this was ridiculous. He took what might have been something fun and turned it into somehting that pissed us all off and made us hate the experience.

I have so much free stuff, it's coming out my ears, and I still haven't gotten through all of it. Send me an IM and I'll send you a landmark. There's free stuff all over the place, and it's not going away.

Second Life is graphics intensive, and it looks to me some of the problems you're experience may be due to having a low-end PC, or maybe a slow network connection.

I'm having such a blast on Second Life!
