My wife and I will be giving each other gifts pretty soon, and we both decided we want Heroscape stuff. We have at least one of everything, with 3 minions and drones, 3 master sets, and 2 orcs. What should we ick up? I got the wolves/4th line pack already, but looking around was over kill, and I couldn't decide. I want lava and bridges, she wants figures, and we really can't figure out how to meet in the middle.
I figured I'd throw this out here, since this is my first post at the new site.

Welcome to the boards Ted, I say terrain, more terrain always makes the game more exciting, there are already alot of figs. I buy terrain 9 out of 10 times anymore.

Non-standard terrain, like the trees and Tundra, is certainly important. But I'd also suggest that having two of each common is more useful than one (or three, for that matter, unless money grows on trees). Two allows you to draft one each, or to to grab both to use the squad at its best. So far, I've sworn off buying 3 or 4 of each common, as not only does the law of diminishing returns kick in when you've got lots of something, but it also puts a bit more pressure on the draft - if you really want the Agens, you need to grab them before they've both gone.
Sooo, one of you gets Roads or Tundra, the other gets a couple of your favourite commons. Lava I've yet to see the point of, TBH; apart from the movement restrictions (and with elevation changes plus water, and now snow/ice, there's plenty of scope for that anyway), it adds only limited variety - Tundra on the other hand has flat terrain that affects movement AND pieces that block line of sight (and heck, it looks good too).

I'd go for Tundra and/or the Landesfarme Heroes, just because they are such fun. And I like trees, so always want more of 'em.

Definitely get Road to the Forgotten Forest terrain expansion - as many as you can acquire just for those gosh-darned cool trees. You'll want more Vipers and Orcs, at least 2 Minutemen and Aubrien Archers.
You get her figures, she gets you terrain.
Now I've given you advice, time to ante:
What's your secret in getting your wife so involved in Heroscape, man?!?
Sounds like a blissful match made in heaven if you aske me.
Just imagine the HS wedding anniversary gifts to each other!!!

And welcome!

I would spend your entire budget on Orcs. If you have $100 buy ten packs of them.

I'm still waiting for my master set to get here in the mail (hopefully today) but I have my RTFF setup with the Wave 1 packs that I bought. My wife was looking at it and the cards last night and asking questions so I have hope she'll get into it. Makes spending the next couple hundred dollars on HS stuff easier if she does hehe.

You each can decide what you want the most, they way I look at it, just to cool. Me if you don't have THe FF, the road, the bridge, the trees all add something to the game and are a must ( 3 or 4 of them is not out of the question if you really wnat to build some killer boards, but 2 is always better then 1 ).
Then the units, if you use snakes much definetly get more of them. More hounds is also really nice.
Off subject , I have found the paper fold up horse and knights from older AD&D times work really gret as extra hounds, perfect size almost.

Another vote here for RTFF. The trees add so much to a map that I just about can't be happy without them! The bridge walls also look killer, and the road tiles always seem to become coveted territory on the board.
As for figures, I'd try for uniques - more bang for your buck IMHO. You don't need to buy more than one pack, unlike commons which work better in multiples.

Buy both: One expansion with terrain and two boosters of figures... cost you around $40-50 dollars and its a win/win situation.
Gotta love win/win.

as to fiq's...
get 2-3 sets of the commons ye like...and 2 sets of the hero's so ye both can have what ye want..
other than that it's open for whatever ye want

Trees and Tundra. Tundra if you can get it, otherwise trees.

Well you say you alredy have one of everything, and more of Minions, Orcs, and MS, so you know how cool terrain is already.
If you have one of everything, just start getting extras of your faves. I'd say you can't go wrong with having at least two of every common or terrain pack, and you'll want more of some.
Someone said more commons gives you diminishing returns....I strongly disagree. I think it opens up your options even more, almost like having new figures. Strategies change enormously depending on whether you have just one squad of Vipers or are rushing across the field with 5 squads. One squad of Vipers are almost useless, and are truly just scouts. Five squads can bring down Jotun or Charos in one turn sometimes, making them a heavy hitter.
I recommend to anyone that will listen that you should restrict multiples of the same common to the same player. Having you and your wife field the same commons seems kind of lame to me, and takes away some strategy. I say "lock in" the extra commons to the player that drafted the first squad. They can take them if they wish anytime during the draft, or pass and remove them from the drafting pool. Having five players each field a squad of Orcs kind of ruins the variety for me.
My current lineup, after about two years in this hobby (Has it really been that long? Jeez.) is like this.....
4 Master Sets (old style with sparkly water, red/blue dice, etc)
2 Master Sets (new style with flat water, white dice, EOVs, etc)
6 Grut Orcs (they're better the more you have I think)
5 Romans
5 Snipers/Vipers (Vipers rock in swarms)
1 Wave I Heroes
4 Minions/Drones (follks say you need three to use the power, but four lets you get better results from it after taking casualties)
4 Wolves/Minutemen (Minutemen are possibly the best common squad in the game, I think)
3 Knights/Swog (my rule was two Arrow Gruts per Swog, but I'm planning on changing that ratio to 1:1)
1 Wave II Heroes
4 Kilts/Commandos
4 Sentinels/Monks
3 Gorillinators/Hounds
1 Wave III Heroes
3 Greeks/Vipers
3 Gladiatrons/Elves
1 Samurai/Lawmen
1 Wave IV Heroes
1 Wave 2.5 Large Heroes
1 Wave 4.5 Large Heroes
6 RTFF
4 Lava
1 Tundra
1 Nerak (thanks Markwars!)
My wishlist currently has on it....
1 Knights/Swog
1 Greeks/Vipers
1 Gladiatrons/Elves
3 Tundra
2 LOOSE Swogs w/cards
3 LOOSE Vipers w/cards
2 LOOSE Marro Drones w/cards
1 LOOSE Minutemen w/card
1 LOOSE Marrden Hounds w/card
4 LOOSE sets of single hex trees
4 LOOSE sets of land (no water)
2 LOOSE sets of rock terrain
1 LOOSE Lucky d20 glyph
...and of course Castles, Wave V, and any other surprises down the line.
I'm also looking to get some of these things when I have the time and money to search for them....
2 nice wooden dice towers...no fancy designs, just nice wood with felt, perhaps one light wood and one dark wood, but still matching styles. I would love it if I could find one that was cut like a seven hex tile on the bottom and sides so it could be built into the board...but that's way too much to hope for.
4 different colored d20s...that way each player in a four player game can have a die of their own with no confusion instead of everybody rolling black...probably red/blue/green/yellow, or maybe fancy colors if I see something I like.
4 different sets of skull/shield die...I may buy these from the thread here if they come up with designs I like, but maybe not. I'd want just slight variants on the official version for the other 3 players, and one official set.

Wow, thanks for all of the input guys! I ended up buying a set of minutemen/wolves for my wife, and she got me a lava set, because I love lava, and one pack of romans, which she is waiting to give to me in case we find a pack of vipers.
For our anniversary, which was what the gifts are essentially for, we played a massive map with a volcano on top, and some ice in the corner with glyphs all over it.
I am very glad my wife is a HS freak. When new expansions are released, SHE'S the one who wants to hit every store in a 20 mile radius. Now she's getting the itch to multiply forces, which is something I was never too interested in, other than the minions and drones. I was always curious about a roman army, but thought that would work best with a castle.
I can't really to get her on board with the terrain though, which is what I want more than anything. Map building is my all time fav! I sit in my basement for hours tweaking every aspect I can, while she waits impatiently upstairs.
She wants an army of orcs, I want 50 bridge sets to build a city, but all in all, I think it rocks to have an all time game partner, any time, any day. Thanks again guys, you helped me a bit.
