I am proud to announce the first official SoCal League event of 2007:
SoCal GamesDay Meet & Greet: Getting Back to Basics
When Boom and I talked about what we wanted to do to kickoff this new season of Scaping, we thought it would be great to go back to the roots of what brought us together in the first place.
Scaping for the joy of it and meeting new players!
It's been over two years now since Boom and I met up and played our first game of Scape. In those 2+ years we have met many other people with the same love of this game that we now consider friends.
We've had the pleasure of Scaping with players from all over including San Diego, Central Cali, San Francisco, Las Vegas, and even New York.
And now we would like to envite YOU!

Getting Back to Basics is going to be an Open Form Gaming Session. Where the focus is on meeting new friends/opponents from your area and playing multiple games in ANY style you want (General Specific, Scenario, 3 or more player games, team games, Draft, Premade, etc.).
We are looking forward to seeing old freinds and always ready to welcome new faces. The last big meeting brought out a new group of youngsters that defeated even the best of us old timers (myself included).
Call your friends, Beg your mom, Plead with your wife, Organize a Carpool, but one way or another make it down for a day full of Scape!!!
We're trying to make this the biggest gathering of SoCal players yet!!!
Looking forward to seeing you there.

I am sorry to say that I will not be able to make it. That is the weekend we are throwing my son's Birthday party. I would like to mention the next weekend I was looking to plan something but if a Tournament is too intimidating then we can scale down. Or if people are still interested in that weekend too let me know.

I am just seeing this post! That's what I get for being a skimming, lurking, sometimes poster lately :D
This date should work for me...pending approval from management  The wife and kid will be in Texas visiting family the the prior weekend (7th) so I will be down to travel or host that day.
Looking forward to friendly gaming. With this structure there will be no excuses for not getting the desired matchups. Feek, get your Vipers ready

I havent played a game of scape since b4 Christmas. I would definetely like to go. You could put me down for prob. Also, anyone need a Jandar, Vydar, Utgar flagbearer? I have these xtras that i got w/ my 4 castles for christmas. Has anyone thought of Barad-Dur or (Sarumans Tower) as it is commonly known for castles?
I might see if I can bring Alex.

Glad to see you chime in Royalgriffin, really am hoping you and alex can make it!!!
As for castles... I don't recall seeing a Barad-Dur (but seen a few Helm's Deep).
On a side note. I'm thinking, since I'm getting there early, I will probably setup a larger 4+ set map for team games or multi-player battles. :odb:

I know this event is supposed to be an 'open gaming' type of set up. However, could we set a point value for our prebuilt armies? That way, no matter what kind of game is played, we'll be bringing the same point value to the table.
Just a suggestion...

Since we're not obligated to cram multiple rounds in with a timer, I'm thinking a 500 point army might make things interesting and or a 300 point build. "Quick, slow, quick, quick, slow".
Something different from the 400 norm?

Something different from the 400 norm?
How about 532.67? :D
I like the 300 & 500 idea. That way for team games 300pt armies can be played.
Also there should be a prize given to the player that I win against the most...you know for incentive

I agree with AllSkulls that the 300 and 500 armies sounds like a good idea. I don't think I've ever put a 300 point army together... so that should be fun!
Also, to respond to what Oog posted earlier about him setting up a larger map, that sounds like a good idea, as well. Variety and all that, you know? A larger scale set up would also help to showcase the versatility of the build system to folks in the store not familiar with HS.

I think pre-made is best and we should allow for mixed generals for the newer players who might not have much to choose from. I think the fact that it will be non-tournament play should promote fun army builds instead of the standard "shure shot" armies.
We can also have armies made up for demo games. I will gladly do some demos for the curious onlookers.

I thought The DWF idea behind "Worst Army Ever", sounded fun and definately different.
http://heroscapers.com/community/showthread.php?t=7269
You create the worst army you can think of...
Your opponent does the same.
You trade armies and who wins.
By winning you prove that your army is the worst (or your a better general).
---------------------------
Brining premade armies will help things move quicker, but it's not necessary. Some people may want to draft.
Which brings me to a new proposition: The Grudge System

OK, so here's my idea:
Grudge System
A Grudge Match (GM), plain and simple, is when you are challanged to a game of Heroscape by another player.
- Each player may only have 2 GMs:
One GM that was issued to another player
And One GM that was accepted from another player.
- All GM requests are done via PM.
- Once a GM is accepted, it should be posted in this thread.
- The participants of the GM must agree on the map/format of the GM.
- The player who accepted the GM gets the option to draft first or second.
- All GM's are to be posted no later than 7am Monday April 9th.
- Players may also draft via phone, in person, etc.
----------------------------------------------------
Example:
So I PM player "X" and challenge him to a GM.
He says, "No, no Oogie, I'm afraid of you. Please don't hurt me."
So I PM Player "Y".
He cry's the same thing.
So I PM Player "Z".
He's got some cahones, and says "Sure thing."
So I post in the thread.
"Oogie vs Player Z, GM accepted."
So player Z and I PM each other and decide to play on Soulrazor Canyon "Worst Army Ever" (or deathmatch or capture the flag, whatever).
Since player Z accepted he descides he wants to draft first.
He picks Dund and PM's me with his pick.
I pick Sparticus.
We go back and forth till we're done.
BAM!!!
Pre-DRAFTED armies, ready for play!!!
This way we get the quickness of pre-made, with the fun and strategy of Drafting!!!
--------------------------------------
The main reason for only having 2 GMs per person, limits us from getting too clicky.
The GMs would be the first two games only. Anyone who is not matched up for a GM that round would still get to play with other players. (if there is an odd number of players and someone is getting left out, all GMs would be placed in a hat and one would be pulled out, that GM would then be moved over to the larger map for a three player game).
People can choose their first opponents. Havn't played an old freind? Grudge Match. Wanna play some fresh meat? Grudge Match. Wanna challenge the top dog? Grudge Match.
Possibly even Team Grudge Matches.
--------------------------------------------
So that's it. Maybe we can tweak it down to one GM per person. Just throwing it out there, to see what you guys think.
I'll probably start a thread on this idea (maybe even work in a tournament freindly mod).
BIGJIM

COOL PRE - MADE ARMYS ! BUT AT WHAT POINT COST 300 OR 500 ? OR SHOULD YOU HAVE A COUPLE OF EACH OR A 500 POINT ARMY THAT CAN BE BROKEN DOWN TO A 300 POINT ARMY ? I AM DOWM WITH WHAT EVER FLOATS YOUR BOAT !

Think of it as a "Challenge Match" like the proposal for the infamous Beatdown that never happened...yet :D
I have maybe one or two grudges but I'd rather challenge someone that I did not face yet. And an online/phone draft sounds good too! Now to pick my victim...er uh opponent

Hey, I've been contimplating wether I can make it or not...but guess I can throw in as a possible...depends wether I have a magazine to close or not. Do have a question or two though.
1) as a newer heroscaper, what does this "day" involve. Being new, i'm likely to be wiped out as i've read through this and people have mentioned the known "kick" butt usual armies and we always draft different armies and just have fun. Not that I mind some ass kicking, don't mind losing as it's just a game...but don't want to be humiliated at the same time because I don't completely know what's what as there are so many figures and some have yet to be used at all.
2) what do we actually bring...like all our stuff including land etc, all figures markers etc.
3) what kind of rules are adopted as I'm sure with many others, we have "house" rules that have tweaked things to our liking. One of the more useful rules is a move only turn with the "X" marker which allows for deployment of pieces that might otherwise be left behind and/or just to move things along a bit faster.
4) *edit* - with premade armies, if armies should be based some what on the board being played, shoudl be be aware of anything in particular to be planned for...?
Thanks...hopefully all works out and I can make it as I love to play...

Hey nbx, I hope you do make it out. We are a very casual group and fun is going to be the order of the day for this event. Let me see if I can answer your questions:
1) You can expect a day of fun gaming with other folks who enjoy the game as much as you. As far as serious @**-thumping armies, don't expect to see a lot this day. I've actually suggested having at least one junk army for fun so seldom used figures can be dusted off. Not a lot of us use Q9, Krav Maga and other "power" units on a regular basis. Also, we're not playing for prizes or glory so I anticipate very little power gaming. The only army I plan to put any thought into is the one I'll use to help Oogie stomp on hex and wilk  .
2) Bring whatever figures you'd to use that day. Also, all your dice, order and wound markers, and army cards, 'natch. Keep checking back regularly for any point requirements. It may help you minimize what you have to haul over. I'm thinking maps will be covered, but Oogie can confirm later.
3) We don't have any house rules per se, although your "x" order move-only sounds interesting.
4) As for army build, I say don't plan on any specific board. It's always fun to see non-flyers tiptoeing around a lava field  . Seriously, some maps will be posted soon allowing you to see what to expect, so feel free to build accordingly.
Show up, play me, and I can almost guarantee you'll hand me my head. You haven't seen me roll dice before. It's not a pretty sight.

Really hope you decide to come on out nbxfan.
I think boom did a good job describing the day.
Historically the SoCal League Events have been a series of Tournaments, often one each month. It was a standard 400 point pre-built army format. We would post the maps in advance.
It has been a while since the SoCal League has gotten together (I think the last time was before Thanksgiving). So The Kickoff is a chance to rally players (both old and new) for some old fashion "gaming for gaming's sake" fun.
This is not a Tournament. There is no official structure. The best way I can describe it would be... Just imagine this meetup is not at a Game Shop. Instead think of it as meeting up at a friends house. You can play ANY type of game on ANY type of map.
All you need to bring are your figures, makers, cards, and dice.
Personally I'll be setting up 2 maps (a 4 player map and a 3 player map). There will also be plenty of 1 player maps to accomodate everyone.
Also, I get tired of playing with (or against) the standard armies. So if you come I would like to get a game with you. We can pick a map and draft some rare units (or themed or whatever).

And to NBX, I also hope you're able to make it to the gameday. The more the merrier, truly. The core group that I've had the pleasure to game with are all good people. I sometimes get my arse handed to me, but it's all in fun. :D

Sorry bout' that, Adam.
Of course you can bring a map! Actually it's encouraged.
I'll be setting up a 4 player and a 3 player map. After that any other help would be great.
It is always nice when people bring maps.
3 Reasons:
1 - That's one less map I have to build.
2 - I love to see and play on other maps (more diversity).
3 - Better to have more maps than not enough.
Just so you know, the tables at S&C are 6' x 2.5'.
You may want to consider getting there early to setup.
It would be awesome if you could post a pic of your map here, before the event. (if not that's fine too).
Looking forward to meeting you and hopefully playing a game on your map!

Here's some MOPS!
These are for a 3 player 300pts squads scenario I am putting together. After a figure is destroyed, the controlling player must rotate any one of the MOPS once. When any of the ice spaces are touching, a figure in one of the ice spaces may summon a single hex hero instead of attacking (roll 15 or higher...one hero each team). What's cool is the heroes won't be known by the other players until summoned. If anyone interested in playing this one, this will be my "grudge match".

Here is a flying MOP. My do a castle in the sky later.

And single hex MOPs...

Yes, bring your prebuilt armies with you to the event.
Also, this event is different than others held in the past in that it is VERY freeform. This is more a gameday get together, rather than a tournament. There will be several maps set up for people to play on, and you can just sit down and start playing with whoever.
You can also bring whatever type army you like. You can even bring an army you rarely play just for the fun it, because that's what this day is all about. Open gaming, and meeting other 'Scapers from Cali. The majority of people look to be bringing 500 point prebuilt armies, so I'd start there. I know most of the armies I'm packing are going to be 500 points.
Sounds like you're going to be able to make it, and that's good to hear. The more the better. :)

How about we split our 1000 points into 2 separate armies with separate order markers. On your 1st turn choose either of your #1 markers, 2nd= any #2, 3rd= any #3. Play will still go back and forth like this...
Payer 1- Order Marker 1
Payer 2- Order Marker 1
Payer 1- Order Marker 1
Payer 2- Order Marker 1
Payer 1- Order Marker 2
Payer 2- Order Marker 2
Payer 1- Order Marker 2
Payer 2- Order Marker 2
Payer 1- Order Marker 3
Payer 2- Order Marker 3

Payer 2- Order Marker 3

It was definitely a good time. Nice to put some faces to the icons you see all the time like oogie, boom, Allskulls...obviously others as well. I'm not sure how you have organized a tourney in the past as with just over 4 1/2 hours of play, we managed just two games. I'd throw my towel in for playing just as we did again without a tourney but I'd still play regardless.
Gotta say, I got completely wiped across the board the first game but, I still managed to learn something and, it was interesting to see the army that did it and how. I think that was one of the most interesting parts, seeing the various armies people chose, the army that decimated me in a mass drove wasn't even anything special to look at. The flagbearer, sir gilbert, 2 or 3 waves of knights, 2 or 3 waves of minuteman and eldgrim. The reason it worked so well was the bonding of the knights allowed him to travel with his flagbeareer which in turn allowed a role for extra movement by squad members, followed by the actual turn for the knights. Before I knew it I was over run even with the high ground making my long range support useless. Great 1-2 punch...
Anyways, thanks to all for making it a great day, wish I could have stayed longer and, thanks to the guys that drove several hours just to come play for a few...nice to meet everyone and I look forward to more days in the future.

"You're boom? I thought you were younger."
"Big Jim. Yeah, you're the guy who types in all caps."
"No, Wilk. She can't come home with us."
I also want to throw HUGE respect to Adam's Dad for sticking out the whole day there at the game shop to allow your son to hang out. That was great of you, truly. Especially when it started to get ridiculously hot in that place. Not at all comfortable. That store seriously needs to invest in some air conditioning... or at least a small oscillating fan!

Woot my dad!!! :D And I was the one who said those first two quotes of yours, Hex!!! And I thought boom was younger just because, well, when you never have seen somebody before, and all you see is a little avitar of a little car, you can see where I'm going.
Please don't hurt me boom. I like living. :D
Edit: I just showed my dad this thread's last 2 pages, and he chuckled a little. You know how trombonists can be. (he plays trombone, in case he didn't tell you, but I doubt he wouldn't have, it's unlike him to not speak of it. P.S. He's not the only one, I play clarinet, so did my grandpa on mother's side!) He said all you guys were nice guys. :D
Except boom :D

*This is the only other game I got to play that day (team grudge castle lasted over 2 1/2 hours)! Me and BIGJIM got a chance to duke it out. I gotta say, I REALLY love this map. We played 300 point armies and it was a quick, brutal battle. I highly recommend this map to anyone.
And although we did forget to get a larger group pic at the game store, we did get a shot at the pub.
Clockwise from the bottom left (Wilkerson74, BIGJIM, hextr1p, ODB, boom (far right), allskulls).

Did not want to post in the Castle Grudge thread to muck it up, but I gotta say great report so far! I did not watch the full action like I thought I would...2.5 hours  I had to get my few games in too. What I did witness was very intense...I saw much sweat (I think it was this game that caused the A/C to go out).
Oh, and sorry about Braxas, hextr1p...dang :D

Ha, that's my SON'S t-ball record. Didn't get a chance to tell you at the match, but very nice job on the map. You built that sucker in record time.
'Skulls, my wife and I keep laughing at the girl at the pizza parlor yelling your order is ready, "All Skulls, baby!"
