Any players of this one here?

I am currently borrowing a friends copy, but hope to pick up a copy soon for myself, as I have been having quite a bit of fun with it.

Yep! I enjoy the game quite a bit. I've only played with two players once and didn't like it as much as with 3 or 4.

To an extent there's certainly some luck involved and I do think the aristocrats exponential worth as you collect them is a bit extreme but it's not that big of a deal. Played the other week and I went for a pure building strategy and ended up only a few points from winning. Had I been able to end the game one round sooner I think I would've won, so that felt good.

It's just a fun game of some really serious cash flow management. You need to focus on getting income early on but at some point - either through buildings, 'crats or a mix of both - you need to switch into VP gear or you'll be out of the race. It's fun to see a variety of strategies get played and you really need to be a bit flexible... it's tough to have a set strategy going into it and really stick with it to the end.

Good stuff, very much recommended :)

That is interesting that you prefer two player. I thought it played a bit better with 3 and 4.

Are the cards sized like normal sized cards or are they smaller? From the pictures on BGG, they appear smaller. I try to use card sleeves for all my games and just wondering whether the cards will fit in normal sized sleeves.

They are a little smaller, and they have some gold foiling that will wear off after a lot of plays, but the copy I have has probably seen over 100 plays and it is still in good condition.

Ah, heh. That's just a very poorly written sentence on my part :) I meant to say that I've played two player once but I prefer to play with three or four. The game certainly works just fine with two but you get so many cards out that it feels like a bit much. With three or four it's much more of a challenge to manage your cash flow.

Its on my next order from Thoughthammer.

I've read all over BGG that its a great 2-player game for couples. Seems like you guys prefer it with more...

The game certainly works fine with two. It just has a very different feel with three and four. I think there are better two player games than St. Pete's although it is fine.

My only real complaint with the game is the paper money... I hate paper money in games. Usually we end up using poker chips if someone has them.

Yeah, I have played it two player, and it works fine that way, but I would rather play with 3 or 4.

I actually don't mind the paper money in this one, because it is kind of waxxy and it holds up real well.

I hate St. Petersburg. I've played it about 200+ times, and I still hate it. Manipulation of the orange cards is key (unless everyone tries that,in which case you *might* eke out a win with the blues).

Why play something that I hate so many times? There's a free-to-download PC version kicking around somewhere; and there are very few GOOD PC versions of German board games. Ticket to Ride takes a bit too long to play when you;re supposed to be working; Puerto Rico never worked; Carcassonne plays viciously - and possibly cheats; though there is a god San Juan out there (two in fact, though one was slightly bugged last time I downloaded it).

LOL! That's the problem with work...it interrupts too many games!! ;)
