View Full Version : Dictatorbilbo's Custom Terrain! *NEW* Monolith of Aquilla!

After looking at Gidian's amazing tutorial, I decided to attempt to build a piece of terrain that would fit in with the new jungle terrain; The actual monolith itself is made out of insulation foam, painted black and then drybrushed with progressively lighter shades of grey. I then mounted it on a two-hex piece and stuck some aquarium plants into four pieces of air-drying clay.
I have a bridge, arch, and pillar in the same style in the works, and I should be able to finish them within the week.
Well, without further ado;
Forgotten Monolith of Aquilla.

Here's what was my entry for the second Speed Custom Contest; It's made of styrofoam, and was carved out using a pencil. I then painted it dark grey and dry brushed white and green onto it.
Trust me, it looks a thousand times better in person!

I had an empty hour, so I decided to make some construction-paper heroscape terrain. They're both taped together, but are surprisingly sturdy- I plan to create a wooden frame for the next one I make. They were really easy to construct, so I'm thinking of making a tutorial the next time I make one.
Well, here we go:

I think they both look very good, especially for paper work. Looking forward to the tutorial.

Awesome looking! :D. I think that the Utgar one would look better over lava, though.

Wow, DictatorBilbo, these are perfect for the Heroscaper with a small budget (read: me). I would encourage you to post a tutorial. And Newb, DictatorBilbo has very much captured that Gennedy Tartovsky vibe, especially with the Jandar arch.

 Wow. You made that out of styrofoam? It looks pretty good here, and if it's a thousand times better in person? Is that a Tarn in the Styrofoam? And what kind of paint sticks on the tiles? Sorry for all the questions, but this is pretty darn good.

Yup, it's a tarn, painted black, and then dry brushed with grey and green.
I used acrylic paints to paint everything before spraying it all over with a clear matte shellac. Though, you have to be real careful when spraying styrofoam with anything, as the aerosol melts it.
It looks better in person because it's harder to see the styrofoam beads. If I had more time I would've painted it more thickly to obscure the beads completely.

That's exactly what I was thinking, that big guy from the episode with the never ending bridge looks a lot like one of the MacDirk warriors... Then an Izumi Samurai to be Jack... It's sounding like I'll be making a Samurai Jack battlefeild soon...

The Scotsman! Best character ever! Weird, I was just watching Samurai Jack. You know, with the movie being confirmed and all.

I never would have guessed that was styrofoam. Very nice paperwork too.

 Thank you!

Thanks! I don't know the exact names of the paints, (I just used one of those little strings of tiny plastic tubs stuck together), but I first used a darker green, a standard green, and then a lime green. I hope that helps...

The monolith looks very nice. Good structure, good paintjob, good use of the plants. All together a very good terrain piece.
