I want to thank Lilnewbie for showing us that the Mega Blok POTC boats work for HS. I got a little money for the b-day and seen about 14 of these boats at Walmart. I purchased 4 sets and I had to paint up 3 (4th will be taken care of soon) of them because they are, to me, an ugly green. Here are the pictures and tutorial.
Materials Needed:
Mega Bloks Pirates of the Caribean boat # 1012 (comes in a compass thing) $5.88 if not on sale.
Anita's Paint; Black #11002 $0.47 and Metallic Silver 11206 $0.87
FolkArt Paint; #667 Metallic Gunmetal Gray $0.87
DecoArt; Metallics Elegant Finish Dark Patina $2.17 (this is an optional paint)
Paint Brush
Edit: The paints can be found at Hobby Lobby and I have seen some of these at Walmart.

Here is the figure platform painted black. It was easier to take the front piece off for me but isn't neccessary.

A big difference from the original gray to the black, starting to look better!

Metallic Gunmetal Gray painted on the fronts. What a beauty! Bye Bye Ugly green. {what isn't shown here is the sides and back of the boat being painted Gunmetal Gray as well} I also painted the inside of the front to cover the uglyness and make it look consistent. Once the paint dried, I painted a little bit of patina to the front for the old metal look (but this is optional). It looks better in person (next picture down).
I didn't get a picture of the painting for the railings, I placed the rails on a lego board and painted them Gunmetal Gray as well.

Here is the 2 finished boats next to the molded green pea soup. The green color on the front bottoms of the boats is the Patina.

This was the easiest to paint. It is coated in black first. I did the same with these rails, placed them on a lego board (8 rows of 2), painted black and waited for them to dry. Once dry, I, what I call, half dry brushed the railing boards (horizontal only). {half dry brush is where I have enough paint on the brush to coat about half of the piece, I spread that over the whole piece to allow the black to come through the silver} When it came to the front piece, I painted the horizontal area and the nose.

Here is the two painted boats compared to the original diarrhea. :puke:

This tutorial reads odd to me. I wasn't planning on making a tutorial because I thought the pictures would explain themselves, but I just started typing. I am sorry for any problems in the reading of this thread, but I DO hope it helps or that you enjoy it!

I like the black decks.

But I actually like the diarrhea color. But I keep the masts that come with the boats. I Also used use extra legos to extend the back of the boad so 3 characters fit better and also the characters line up on the 3 hexes the boat takes up.

If I where to find the time to paint my boats I would probably go with a broan color and a black deck

When you do get the time, I'd like to see the extended boats and a paint job in the future.

Got pics of the stretched boats?

so does the front of that boat fit in the rear too? I might go for it if I could use the nose at both ends... would be similar to some viking boats.

Draconious,
Yes, you can modify it like that. I didn't try that, but you can do that pretty easily.

Awsome job once again! I wonder if you could use clay or greenstuff to get rid of the studsof the legos. And might I ask when you are going to update your bidge thread? you kinda left us in the dark over there. :?

Nice work again Insomniac...

I have been working on flat decks for the boats along with a boatman...which will pilot the boats and still allow 2 single base or 1 double base figure to ride in the boat.....

The boatman has no loyalty to anyone and will take anyone who "pays" him across the water

Deadeye,
Sorry for leaving you in the dark, the light switch is to your left. haha..
I've moved back to tucson and was real busy the last month or so.
I was going to put resin on the base to get rid of the bumps.

Onacara,
This boat man, how would he get the cash? I think that is a great idea. Pictures please...

Thanks guys... Hope this was useful for ya!

The exchange of money is only metaphorical...the point is that he is neutral and part of the boat so you can either destory the boat itself or the boatsman..

Here is the figure I am goin to mod into the boatman...

That is actually a shovel in his hand but I am going to turn it into an oar

I think that figure would work perfectly with a little mod. Would you repaint him?

looks like a great idea to me, but if i may ask, any ideas on how to cover up/flatten the Lego Pegs on the deck?

thanks for sharing...

Wow. You're boat looks great. The original looks good, but this makes it even better.

I was going to try Resin for fiberglass. I've worked with the stuff and it is fairly cheap and comes in big quantities. I've got another idea that will need fiberglass and Resin, so I'll have extra. I know Lego makes flat pieces that might work. Maybe get some that are 4-5 pegs long and 1 peg wide and stagger them like a wood floor, painted up?

Wow. You're boat looks great. The original looks good, but this makes it even better.

Thank you. I have 1 more that is original color and it's calling my name, insisting that I paint it. I'm thinking of a hypnotic theme with some tie dyes. haha.. J/K.. I don't know what the last one will be.

On a side note, well bottom note in this case. I'm kinda not liking how the boat leaves slight little scratches on the water tiles (anal, yes) and I don't want them to lose there shiny, glittery-ness, so I was thinking about putting some felt on the bottom of the boat. This will decrease friction, increasing knots.
