Formerly known as DADnCaleb, on this site I shall go with Double Oak - for the ol' hometown of Double Oak, Tx. Decided to switch names as I was starting to get known as Caleb which is actually my son's name!
Ninthdoc was wondering if we had gotten Velenne over to this site yet, any word?

I have an out-of-state business trip coming up but have a plan I will look into once I get back. I was looking over the map and realized this:
Houston area is 3 to 4 hours from Taylor
DFW area is 3 to 4 hours from Taylor
San Antonio area is 2 to 2.5 hours from Taylor
Austin residents are 15 to 75 minutes away from Taylor
ultradoug is about an hour from Taylor
Tyler is 5 hours from Taylor
If I had access to a convention size building how many people could make it to Taylor? Just want to know if this is worth investing my time arranging.

As I stated when you stopped by my place, I am all for this. I ahve wanted to get up to Dallas, but time after time my plans have screwed up.
To me, Texas is the best state for scaping and scapers...we need a central location to bring us all together.
I would love to have people come to my neck of the woods, but no one is crazt enough to make the drive...it is pretty far.

Rod - the wife has given me a glimmer of hope for this weekend but it is still 50/50 at best. If I come, Caleb will come as well (will your son be playing - are you up for a dad n son team game?).
Might even bring another fairly new scaper as well. Could be good showing or we could be no-shows - all depends on dem in-laws and if they are wanting to do stuff or just hang at the house.

Wow, rev, I didn't notice that you were from Little Rock. I have family in Cabot and Searcy. I think that you're the first player from Arkansas to post on either the HQ or here.

With a daughter, son-in-law, and two grandkids just outside of Fort Worth, we get to Texas pretty often. I'll be watching for possible get-together dates coming up.

Hi, I just moved to Austin and kept all my HS stuff out of storage just in case.
Little background...I've got one of everything out so far and three MS, and I've ran a few big map multiplayer games at cons.
It'd be great to drive less than an hour and get a game in. Unfortunatly I'm living with my in-laws right now, so can't host a game myself :(
A Saturday drive to Dallas may be a possiblity in the future, but trying to find a place to live and other RL concerns are keeping the gaming travel budget small.
TheRealQ
May 30th, 2006, 10:09 PM
O'Keefe, I am in Taylor just east of Austin and ultradoug is less than an hour north in Killeen. I have a table that can seat 8 not to mention I rule the roost and can play whenever I want (as long as I get permission from the wife ;) ). My son and I have an equal share in our HS stuff. We have 2 MS and one of everything other than the tundra and the last set of large figures. We also have extra orcs, minutemen, and wolves. I would love to host something. Just PM me as I am out at this site daily. Right now I am stuck in Maryland on a business trip in which I have not idea when it will end as I am covering for someone undergoing surgery. Once he is good to go I'll be back in town.
As far as real estate goes I can give you a little heads up as I was in the market last October. West costs more, East costs less. The north side is insane with high techies and the neighborhoods reflect that with large cookie cutter homes and a lack of trees. The construction in Cedar Park has really increased commute time from the North West. Georgetown is trying to renovate their artisan district but are still tech heavy.
From my house I can make it to the UT campus in 40 minutes. For some people that is a long commute. For me that is nothing. Even as far out as Taylor there is a large population of Dell employees. They're the ones with the cookie cutter neighborhood. My wife and I were in the market for an older home with hardwood floors. We paid 89k for a house that would cost 150k in Roundrock and 180k north of downtown.
I don't know much about the south side as my bosses wanted me on the north side so I can drive to Dallas if I'm needed.
Oh, BTW, welcome to heroscapers.com and to Austin where weird is a good thing. ;)

2 items of interest:
1) If anyone is interested, I'd be willing to coordinate a large order from House Mouse games to make use of free shipping. This offer is available to anyone in the Dallas area I know who regularly makes our gamedays.
2) For those who don't know (and I was one of them until last night), there is a Gamewyze in the mall in Lewisville. I will not be able to attend, but for those who are interested in checking out some other minis games there is a minis demo this Saturday:
June 10 – ALL Miniature Games Demo Day :: Demos begin at noon through 5pm: Starship Troopers, Hordes, Warmachine, Confrontation, MechWarrior, Star Wars, Axis & Allies, Dungeons & Dragons. (http://www.gamewyze.com/events.php)

Hi everyone thought I'd introduce myself. Just started playing Heroscape today (played 2 games so far) and loving it. Had been eyeballing the thing for a LONG time; ended up getting my brother-in-law one of the Wal-mart starter sets (the ones with the Onyx Vipers) and one of the expansions for Christmas and my sister's birthday (at the time thought she would enjoy it too). One of the wal-marts here had the starter sets on clearance a few weeks ago so I bought 4 of them for $27 each and they have just been sitting here til tonight. Needless to say I really did enjoy the game and would love to hang out with some people in the Tyler/Athens/Murchison area for a few games.

Zircor, I lived in Athens up until last year when I moved back to D/FW. There was a lady that played Heroscape w/her son that lived in Bullard, TX that came up for our tourney in Garland last February. She went by Kev11 on our old site, www.heroscapeHQ.com, which is now defunct. I have not seen her post since about a week after the tourney last February. I don't know anybody that has her contact information. She was a good player, but her son who was about 10, I believe, was really, really good.

in a vue? ye've got it made...
try that kinda trip in a 3 cylinder metro(8 times over 3 yrs)...or an old ford festiva(with no a/c, actually made the trip twice)
or even better in a '71 corolla wagon that has no a/c, no shocks and a busted tailpipe...
last couple times I've done that trip was in '93 hyundair s'coupe(twice), an '00 daewoo(sweet car ran well until a friggin city truck totaled it), um about 6 times over 3 yrs, and now we've got a '05 Elantra GLS which has made it twice this yr.
btw those trip are from DFW to atlanta to savannah(GA coast) and back...
usually over 3000 miles in a week or so(or more...)

Well, for the past 30 years, I would have chimed in and said, "Yep, I'm from Houston!", but I've just recently moved to VA. I'm still a Texan at heart. I've refused to get my license plate changed out so far. Makes people's heads turn up here in the parking lots.

Really? I can't imagine that. I'ts so hot and humid (and smoggy) in Houston compared to VA. I don't know, maybe its because I was born and raised there, but I am just tired of the hot stickiness of the winters, much less the summer! Little Rock probably is a bit better than Houston as far as weather, though, right? I've only passed through, so I really don't know much about Little Rock.

Little Rock's weather is a lot like that we had in Richmond. Enough winter to remind us of it, but long Sping and Fall seasons. It gets hot in summer, but then, unlike Houston, the hot goes away. We like it here most of the time...and really enjoy not having seen any real traffic for twenty years!

We just had our latest tourney. It will probably be early next year before we have another one. Players bring a small entry fee, a prize, and whatever they need to play. It takes 6-8 hours for the tourney, it's shorter for those who don't make the finals and you could leave then, but you'll miss out on the prize table. There are no "scenarios" just head to head combat against one other opponent. Maps are predecided and made available at this site prior to the tourney.

So is Wednesday the determined day? And is the Gaylord the determined spot? My friend and I are in Farmer's Branch, not too far from Grapevine, but Fort Worth would be a bit of a stretch, Geddy. From what I know about the Gaylord, most of the conference rooms would be booked, if one was available, it would be costly.

I'm in Austin - there were rumors in this thread about groups of players, but nothing concrete. Anyone have more facts? Do they meet at Dragon's Lair, or Thor's Hammer, or somewhere else (yes, those are the geekiest possible names for game stores. Hush.)?
I don't get out much, since I have a 5 month old, but I could probably make a game once in a while. My experience thus far is limited to playing with my wife and daughter (who are really just humoring me) for the most part, so I'd like to get beaten down competitively a couple times....

There's some dudes in Austin that used to play weekly, but due to relocations and such stopped the weekly gaming. Some of them still seem to get together at Thor's to play WoW TCG on Friday's, I believe, and would probably dig on some Heroscape as well.

Calling all Austinites! (and anyone else close by) I have been out of circulation for a while but am alive again and want to game. Taylor is a bit northeast of Austin and I am more than willing to sponsor a gathering. If Taylor is too far for city slickers to travel I am more than willing to travel (almost)anywhere into the Austin area to play.
I have recently started a diet and need someone to come here and drink all my beer (Ziegenbach, Fat Tire, Warsteiner, and some homebrew Heffenweisen)...I can't stand to see it go to waste. If we game here I can provide food, drink, and at least one decent map(3 Master, 3 RtFF, 2 Lava, 2 Castle) and my dining room table seats 8.
I would like to play a few games before March 10 since I am considering traveling to Dallas then and don't want to make a complete fool of myself.
As said before, I am willing to meet up anywhere but I don't know everyone elses transportation situation. If memory serves Ultradoug is always up for a game but is stuck in Killeen without a car. If we play here I am more than willing to go pick him up and return him later.
So, what do you say? Anyone game?

My next few weekends will be busy trying to move some things out of storage. I may be able to do something around the end of Feb.
I'm at Dragon's Lair most Wed nights for Warmachine.

The DFW and Houston guys seem to be pretty active and do a bit of both but I don't know of any such gatherings here in Central Texas. I hope to remedy that.

End of Feb. works for me. If you need any help moving drop me a line or give me a ring. I own a pick-up and I'm a heavy lifter. I also carry my office on my hip (pager & cell) so that most days I can go anywhere and do whatever I please. (as long as I stay close to Austin and San Antonio)
Dragon's Lair area is pretty easy for me to reach without hitting traffic so I have no problems coming to you if you don't want to make a trip to the country. I went out to DL's website and noticed that they have instore gaming. If they sell HS perhaps we can convince them to give us space some time.

I'll pass the message on to Krunkster and Casanova - they're in Austin (and Georgetown, actually) and are usually up for a game.
Holla!
Me and Krunkster used to have a weekly game going on way back in the day, but now he is like 5hrs away in through rush hour traffic so our weekly games are no longer
My next couple of weekends might be busy but I'd like to get at least one match in before the Dallas tourny.
Team Krunkanova FTW!

Just wanted to drop a note to say hi to all the Texans. I moved back to the Tyler area a couple months ago after getting a Master's degree and hooked on Heroscape in Illinois :).
Starting a new job on Monday, not sure how well I'll be able to travel but hopefully I'll be able to get to an event or two at some point.

GENTLEMEN...
BEHOLD...
MY FIRST POST!!!
Hey everybody, Long time Lurker, first time poster. I live in Austin Texas
(the ATX), and have been looking for people to play with/ against.
I was the brainchild behind the Heroscape Meet, Greet, & Beat at Dragons
Lair a few weekends ago. It was sweeeeet!
Met a few people I wouldn't mind meeting on the fields of war again.
I actually played a game this past saturday with 2 people I met at the previous battle.
Cool part was it was at this guy's house that had built a battlefield
inspired by the battlefield I created for the Dragons Lair event.
I chose the name Dr. Weirdscaper because I am a huge ATHF fan and
when it comes to creating battlefields, I consider myself a mad scientist.
My "Creation" at the above mentioned event was a city made up of 24
structures and a large wellspring fountain as the centerpiece. 25 glyphs
(2 of every glyph exept for the Lucky 20 Sider that I only have 1 of )
were placed face down in the buildings and the last one placed on the top
of a road tile formation in the middle of the fountain (highest point in the
city). Pictures were taken and I will track them down.

BEHOLD...
...and I'm back.
Hey Rev- Hope to meet you too at an event in Texas.
Seems like it would be a long drive to the Austin area from Little Rock.
Of course, Texas is the best place to go scappin (I'm looking at you-
Dallas & Houston). And as the casual observer would know- you are
an honorary Texan.
Hey Q- Hope to see you there. Wile I'm thinking about it,
what kind of battlefield would you like to see at this event?
All tundra?
Mostly lava?
Forest mountain with big lake?
Golden Gate Bridge?
ect.
Keep in mind, I only have:
12 FOTAK
15 ROTV
18 TT
30 VW
30 RTTFF
I have about a month to make it.
Any thoughts? And no, I don't want
to be given a map- just want to know
what you want on your burger. :)

In reverse order.
Wow you have a lot of land. I don't know of anyone who has as much lava as you do. If you needed a little more for set up I have 4 RotV & 4 RtFF, 3 FotA, 2 TT & 2 VW although from the size of the gameroom I couldn't imagine needing any more than you already have.
Actually I've been interested in small maps for one. Some of the maps that they used for the last Houston Tourney inspired me but I think I might be interested in seein what can be made with half of a master set. Another thing I have been interested in, since seeing a couple of Rev's maps, is multiplayer castle maps using multiple castles but no doors. With the new vampires adding to the entire horror genre I have also been interested in a castle map where most of the map consists of castle with two or more teams starting within. As a scenario I have considered a "haunted castle" theme. With all that lava you have you almost have to build a map with a complete volcano...I just want to see this done, I have no idea if it would actually be playable. Other than already listed I like a heavy use of rivers, bridges, and cover (trees and ruins).
Revdyer has actually popped into Dallas a couple times from my understanding ( I had the honor of playing against him in the team tournament) and if he hopped over to Shreveport he could coast down 79 with a total travel time of only an hour more than going into Dallas...although we probably have a while to go before we can draw Austin crowds the size of the ones in Dallas. Geddylifeson on the other hand is just down in Cibolo and would probably jump at the opportunity to game with a group within just a couple hours from home.
How was your turn-out for this last event? I wanted to be there but was called away on a business emergency.
Revdyer
July 14th, 2007, 09:31 AM
I've been pondering how to do a castle map, with multiple doors facing inward, where you start inside and the goal is to escape and/or kill your opponet(s) before he(they) break out. I suspect it will be after GenCon, though, before I can actually get this set up.
Dr. Weirdscaper

GENTLEMEN...
Hey Q-
It was a pretty good turnout for the first turnout.
Including myself, there were about 9 players.
Unfortunately, not everyone showed up at the same time.
The first game was a 2vs2 game with a 5th player (a kid)
who had to sit out and watch. An hour or 2 into the game,
my team mate had to "go help someone move" (WTF?).
So he left, and the 5th player got to gump in as my team
mate with a fresh 600 point army. We allowed the kid to
start his army anywhere he wanted to. Good times.
About the space available- I used the 2 larger tables
(4 foot by 6 foot) to form a 4 foot by 12 foot table.
I'm thinking the next battlefield will have less length
and width but more hight.
About the smaller maps-
Theres plenty of tables, and no law that says only I am
allowed to build the battlefields. I think it would be cool
to see all of the tables filled with smaller 2,3,or 4 player
maps.
And yes-
I have in the past built some cool (ok, maybe "cool" is
the wrong word to describe them) volcano themed maps.
Most people (cowards) do not like to play on them for
some strange reason...

Hello Dr. Weirdscaper,
I'm new to HS overall, but I might be able to attend the event tomorrow at Dragon's Lair and I am wondering what "flyers" you were referring to. Any help?

Hahaha, I thought he was meaning something in paper, like an organized list of your units with point costs and everything... Now it all makes sense, thanks!

Sorry for the confusion, but no ads are needed.
Welcome to the site, and I hope to see you there. :D

Is there anything going on in the Arlington/DFW area the rest of January?
There is a great comic shop called Lone Star Comics in central Arlington and they have a free gaming room in the back. If some people were interested, I wanted to see about getting some folks together some Saturday to 'Scape the day away.
I've got one ROTV, one SOTM, 1 VW, 1 TT, and 2 FotAK to contribute to making up a couple of maps.
I could bring myself and possibly two others depending on the date. This would be casual play, I'm not looking to set up a tournament. We can draft or bring pre-made armies, whatever is the norm.

Dr. Dub:
There's a Team tourney in DFW on the 23rd - some of you Austinites should think about heading up - it's a blast!

I live in East Texas - Longview. Looks like most things are happening in DFW, Houston or Austin. Such was the case when I played Dreamblade as well.
If there are any Marshall/Longview/Tyler (or in that vicinity) Heroscapers, let me know. Otherwise I'd love to try and make some Dallas events in the future.

Is there any way to find people who live in college station, texas on here. The search doesn't seem very user friendly.

Hey guys I am new to this websites scene but not so new to heroscape, just looking to see how many people around the San Antonio area that enjoy playing.

I know of Geddy Lifeson (sp?), but that's about it in SA. If you're on the north side, a drive to Dragon's Lair for one of Dr. Weirdscaper's ginormous maps shouldn't be TOO far.

Living in Austin or SA means you're well placed to attend tournaments in both cities!
