View Full Version : HS Dice maintenance

I got HS master set for my son for Christmas. Little did i know what i was getting myself into! We play almost everyday!
Needless to say... we're wearing our dice out. The red and blue skulls and shields are coming off. Crazy.
1. Does anyone have any suggestions as to "dice care"? Something to coat the dice? Is there any way to get new dice... without buying a whole new master set... (although i have to admit... i wouldn't mind having a second set. :))
2. Also... I've seen some of the pics on this site with Blue and Red dice. What's up with that?
Thanks for your thoughts and opinions.

The blue and red dice come with the 1st edition Master Set, they rule :);)
I have heard some tips about something you can spray on the dice to keep the image on there...not sure what it was though...someone else will probably be able to chime in with that.

This is a common issue w/the white dice. The white dice were introduced in later sets as a cost-cutting measure for Hasbro.
The red and blue dice were issued w/the first run original master sets.

Clear coat. What is used on painted minis to protect the paint and give them a sheen.

You can also order just the dice from Hasbro for a few dollars:
Hasbro Parts Replacement (http://www.hasbro.com/default.cfm?page=cs_parts).
Just select Heroscape Master Set Order Form.
HouseMouseGames (http://www.housemousegames.com) also sells parts from the Master Sets.

My red/blue dice lost 90% of the original design. As ugly as it is I just painted all the dice with white on the sides that originally had skulls or shields, and believe me ...it is ugly.
If you are looking to get some new dice I noticed Housemouse games is selling em for like 1.99. I think you may get a few extras with that, like turn markers or somehting....but it does keep you from buying another master set.

IMax tuned me into clear nail polish. Works great. Specatular. Protects while it shines.
Oh, it works good on the dice too.

Yeah. i was gonna get them at House Mouse. 1.99 for a set of 10red, 10 blue, order makers, and 1st edition instrucitions... What a deal!
Untill you pay 12 bucks for shipping. No thanks.
I'll go for the clear fingernail polish first!
THanks Newb for the tip on hasbro's replacemnt parts. Great deal there. 10 dice for just 2.00... and that INCLUDES shipping. right on. That's more like it.

Hmmmm... I might have to rummage through my wife's nail polish collection to see if she has any of that... heh heh...

The other thing to do to help preserve the dice, of course, is to roll them on a felted surface or box.

Regular nail polish. I still have the same bottle after doing like 50 dice and that was with double coating.

I tried my wife first, but she had none.
H3xtr1p, I didn't know you were married. You guys all look too young to be married and/or expecting kids.

I remember this thread from HQ. I couldn't find it to find out what to use, so my dice are still unprotected.
I better go do that soon.

avoid grinding them together in your hand before rolling them also helps.

Especially don't let children with sweaty hands hold on to them the whole game! It is very bad for the dice!

Do what I do. Use felt-tipped tweezers, lift each die individually no more than 6 inches off a nice felt-coated surface, and with a controlled flick of the wrist, gently lob the die onto the felt. I haven't had any surfaces fade yet!

Or better yet, construct an exact replica of the die out of plastic. Coat that replica in clear nail polish and roll it instead, keeping the real die sealed away in a humidor.

wow...i cant believe you people never though of coating them with clear paint of some sort. so simple. even i thougt of it!
Wal-mart should sell it by the bottle for like $.50. or, if you are into model-building/painting, Testors has a clear gloss that you could use. And remember, A weighted die in your hand is better than an original die in your opponents!

I have clear coat and clear nail polish here at the house, but I wouldn't think of putting it on the dice!!! If they wear a little, the stores around here all still have master sets left on the shelf.... they all contain new dice. I do wish I had extra red & blue dice, I still can't get used to the white.

If you want to take a step up in the dice world you can try to get on the waiting list for custom engraved Heroscape dice from Josh-n-Papa.
Also I think with the house mouse ordering the $1.99 set is more for tacking on to other orders.

LilNewbie, the hasbro replacement parts order form is a nice find. Don't talk about it too much, so I can sell off my extra 1st edition stuff on ebay for some good money.

I thought it was flat matt finish or something that I read at HQ about what to spray on them???
You could do what I did, go to a tourney and win a set of Josh-&-Papa's dice, oh yeaaaaaaaaaaa, thanks agian truth.
Buying the extra dice from Hasbro is the way to go, cheap, we use permenant marker and find it last longer if you put them in the sun or under a hot bulb for a while - not to close kids you could burnit it is plastic. It doesn't last that long, so I got the engraved dice, will try the coating if I ever get around to buying rom Hasbro, been buying enough MS that I have lots of new dice.

And how paranoid is this - I spent my free time last night lining the rolling boxes we use with felt (green, of course) so as not to damage the dice. Sheesh, this game is an addiction and the first step in the twelve step program is to roll for init.

the red one is kinda small but the green one is huge. that should save your dice plus the games not bad ether

That is pure genius!
I think that I may have to go with two boxes, one red and one blue.
