View Full Version : Bases that let you see the terrain.

I was looking for how to base my custom minis for HS and I noticed that the small flight bases for warhammer are the right size. My thought is that you will be able to see the terrain through the base so you will not have a blob of grass following around a mini in the snow. This seemed like the place to post this as you are the ones worried about how the terrain looks as much as the minis.

Been thinking about the same thing... but I was gona have some parts custom cut on a CNC out of water clear sheet plastic... and cut the nubs off the feet and glue them right to the base... then there was the Ladders... would have to tweak the base/ladders so the figs can climb the ladder. I always hated seeing one type of terrain atop the game board terrain... I always wanted clear bases on all my figs... even grass and pretty decorated bases bug me, reminds me of a cartoon character hiding in a bush, the bush always following them around etc...

Before you go milling your own, you might want to look at the 'round economy bases' at displaycaseart (http://www.displaycaseart.com/acrylicblockbases.html) (aboiut 2/3 down the page) -- 1/4" thick, 1" diameter $12/dozen, 1.5" diameter $14/dozen. Now, there may be a problem getting the figure to adhere sturdily enough to an acrylic base without preserving at least one of the foot nubs, but finding someplace that already cuts the shapes you want will likely be cheaper than having it done yourself.

What I do is paint my base brown, and flock the base with some brown sand and sometimes a dash of static grass.
then it matches ALL terrain

Not true. Brown is dirt. :) Dirt is in all those places.
I don't have any pictures of mine, but dirt looks better then "grass".

Something that just occurred to me is that there is a clear craft product. I think that the idea is to pour it into a clear vase and it sort of looks like water, but it is solid. You pour the stuff into the container and let it dry/set/cure/whatever. Maybe put some of this stuff in the travelling base molds?

Looking at their catalog, wonder what the cost would be to get the "dumbell" stands made with 1 1/2" top/bottoms for flying figures.
