View Full Version : Why "Tarn" Vikings?
Revdyer
June 7th, 2006, 08:49 AM
Does anyone here have any insight into why the Tarn Vikings are called that? "Tarn," I take it, in this context means "lake" or "pond" or some other glacial body of water. Do these Vikings water ski? Just curious.

I think the real question is this, If the Tarn vikings are living together then it is a Tarn community or nation, we would also want to know what kind of landmarks and geography are in Tarn, therefore the correct question is "what in Tarn Nation"? And there you go

once upon a time.
The vikings were going out to play.
one of them picked up some yarn.
"Look ma! t's yarn."
Ma was hard of hearing, "Tarn you say?"
And she named him a Tarn Viking.
So the Tarn Viking was moving ever so slowly, tring to charge, when suddnly a winged Viking flew in she had a spear.
"Behold I summon a carryer carring a unit!" He (or maybe she?) declared.
the Tarn Viking was mightly inpressed. "Show me your carryer."
http://www.lakehurst.navy.mil/nlweb/images/aircraft-carrier-in-motion01.JPG
"Tarn it all, ya screewed up."
And so they slowly moved on, then that dude with the cape from wave for made them move slightly better, whatever his name is I dont know.
And then ultradoug burned the topic to the ground.
the end.

According to Wikipedia, the Latin word "tarnis" means "rapid or walled in".
I've no idea where my own Latin dictionary has got to, but I'm not sure that this is right. The Romans certainly were aware of a river in south west Gaul (now France), which they called the "Tarnis" (now River Tarn). Which is a fast-flowing river running through the Pyrennees - so it would be both rapid and walled-in. However, I don't recall any Latin adjective even remotely close to "tarnis".
So I think someone's been had by dodgy Wiki entries into thinking that "Tarn" might be the equivalent of a fjord or river flowing into a fjord.
Sounds good though.

I thought about that, too, Newb; until I found out that "tarn" was a perfectly good word on its own, and one from Viking territory to boot. I wonder if Norman didn't pick the word up to use from the Nordic?

5 in a row, what's the odds of that happening? Oh, I guess that's a guestion for the mathguy!
...or for ReverendBayes. The chance of charging on one turn is (6/20).
So, five charges in a row happens with probability (6/20)^5, or 0.3 raised to the 5th power, which is: 0.00243.
So, roughly 2 out of 1000. Given the thousands of games played collectively by all scapers who visit this site, I'd say it's not unusual to have someone post that this happened to them.
======
As for the TARN name, any chance it came from one (or a few) of the designers' names? We know the Knights of Weston are named after a designer person, and that Nerak is named after Karen...maybe TARN is an inside acronym for something, or the collection of middle initials of the game designers, or something.

Hmmmm..."Tarn" is really RANT or TRAN or NART...maybe...still, the fact that it comes from Old Norse and is connected to Vikings makes me think it is more than just some vanity name.

A tarn (or corrie loch) is a mountain lake or pool, formed in a corrie excavated by a glacier. A moraine may form a natural dam below a tarn. (A corrie may be called a cirque.)
The word is derived from the Old Norse word tjörn meaning pond as such is often found in names of both glacial and non-glacial small upland lakes in the English Lake District and Pennines.
In local dialect in Cumbria, the word is also used generally to refer to any small lake or pond, regardless of its location and origin [1].
In Scandinavian languages a tjern or tjärn or tjørn is a small natural lake, often in a forest or with vegetation close around it or growing into the lake.

Thanks, again, Venon. Which part of the country is that dialect found in? I ask because I was an English linguistics major in college and have always had an interest in the regionalism of American English. We don't get "tarnstorm" as a term in the parts of the South where I have lived, so was curious about what part of the country uses it.
